leith is probably one of the place you stay away from.... far away from.... stick to the city centre, south and west of the city. lived here all my life, 10 years of my life in leith, 10 years i will never get back, full of tramps and crack heads all over the place. you cant tell from the video, but a camera can make anything look good ;)
And one of the best hostels in Edinburgh just happens to be Edinburgh Central on Leith Walk, just down the road from the Omni and Edinburgh Playhouse. Not the cheapest, but quality is worth paying for.
I love this City, and Scotland in general. I look forward to coming back again this summer. Its good to see what I have already seen and some new thing I'll be seeing. I like videos like this!
WRONG the royal mile is in 5 parts it end's in the HORSE WYND after the canon gate yah prick..................AND ITS NOT EDINBURRRR ITS EDINBURGH....
The cream coloured building at 0:19 is the Grassmarket hotel. I used to work there, its TOTALLY haunted. I know everyone has an 'I used to work in a haunted building' story - but seriously - ghosts, bad ones!
@MagdalenaSzorc uh, i think it just sounds like a watered-down Irish accent....they usu. don't do the whole "th" at beginning of words, but just a straight "t".... so "things" is "tings"
The official residence of the Queen of England here in Scotland, is he for real? Is he stupid? Or is he just trying to influence the independence referendum... anyways EPIC FAIL,
Should have mentioned the historic town of South Queensferry, better know as Queensferry or the Ferry which is now part of the City of Edinburgh, great views of the Forth bridges and plenty of pubs and places to eat.
This was a useful video and all positive coverage of our great city should be welcomed. Yes, the presenter was completely wrong to refer to the Queen as the Queen of England, since there is not even a Queen of England in England! There is a Queen of the United Kingdom and this is who he meant. I guess it is a bit like making reference to the President of California instead of the President of the United States - it sounds wrong and makes little sense.
if you listen to the oath of allegiance given by msps and scottish police officers,it is given to queen elizabeth not qe2 .she nor anyone else could be styled queen of scotland ,the epithet does not exist it would be her grace elizabeth, queen of scots.the term majesty being reserved for god.
Crap i live in Edinburgh and shopping is crap, i go to Glasgow to do my shopping, who wants to walk down Princes st in the pishin rain, at least Glasgow have the sense to put there best shops indoors. And i would not go up Calton Hill either if i did it would be in daylight with a mate, there are some weird people who hang about up there and i dont mean the tourists went up there once at Hogmanay got fuckin pestered by loads o lads who wanted my arse.
@Azureecosse Come on, there's loads more to Edinburgh than simply shopping. You're welcome to your Glasgow shopping centres if that's what ticks the boxes for you, but Edinburgh has plenty to do, rain or shine, and the large number of visitors that go to Edinburgh is testament to the city's vibrancy. As for Calton Hill, well, a lot worse can happen to you in Glasgow if the truly shocking crime stats are anything to go by.
The 11th Ting you must do is go to the disco chippy at the top of Broughton street and get a deep fried mars bar, yes they do exist. Best to phone an ambulance beforehand though, YOU WILL HAVE A CORONARY
@ExtremeDeathman well she is Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom which obviously includes Scotland but why on earth would that make Scotland inferior to England?
Umm, I've been going to the museum of Scotland since I was a toddler, and therefore it must have opened a LOT longer ago than 1998. Maybe it's name changed, but it's actually a Victorian creation.
As for the castle's age, well nobody knows for sure when the first building went up. But there has been a fort and settlement there since the bronze age. Most of what you can see now is from the 11-12th century.
@vinybrazil you would have to be the dumbest individual on the planet if you cannot relate the Queen of England to HM Queen Elizabeth II. I will always refer to her as Q of E as do most of my peers if not just for efficiency then to spite pompous arseholes like yourself. Wanker
@gluthe01 you don't understand do you? There hasn't been a Queen of England since 1707 when Scotland and England united to form Great Britain. After this date the separate crowns of Scotland and England merged to form a single British Monarchy. To continue to refer to her as the Queen of England (especially when your presenting a program in Scotland) is insulting to Scottish people. Feel free to do it next time your here but you wont make the same mistake again. Heard of wikipedia? Use it.
@vinybrazil I fully understand all of your history you idiot. If you were to do some proper research (i would suggest cambridge journals or something similar as wikipedia thinks big bird is the PM of NZ) you would realise that the QofE is head of state of 54 different countries and to name all of them would result in a 15min video. I have spent a lot of time in scotland and i never experienced, nor heard of anyone being offended by such remarks. Get some therapy darling
@gluthe01 I don't need wikipedia-you do! I thought it would help you understand what I was saying but it hasn't. If you understood our history at all you would not call our queen the QofE. England is one part of our country. Britain(the UK) includes England, Scotland, Wales and NI. We are all British and she is our Queen. She is head of state in 16 countries, not 54 which is the total number of nations in the commonwealth but it's not even relevant to the discussion. You are such a fool.
@vinybrazil this discussion seems to have digressed a little from our original topic, it may be noticed that the seat of the QofE is in England therfore QofE is a fitting title. The aim of the video is inform backpackers of attractions as i have previously mentioned everybody knows who the QofE is and therfore the aim to inform has been achieved. As a point of interest i have known people to understand the queen of britain and queen of england to be two completely different people. go figure
@gluthe01 Well it doesn't matter how you try to justify it - it is wrong. At the end of the day what you and other ordinary people say doesn't matter -a lot of people get confused by it- but there is no excuse for the presenter of this program, who is presumably some sort of journalist, to get it wrong. He should of informed himself of the facts. This is Scotland and he has totally misrepresented the Queen as some sort of foreigner who just has a house here. Trust me, we do not appreciate it.
@vinybrazil it does matter how it is justified. at the end of the day the clip was not aimed at scottish ppl, it is aimed at the rest of the world and as such must be in a language that the rest of the world can relate to. Would you market Jandles to Americans?
@gluthe01 but these people intend to travel to Scotland. Can't you understand that for Scottish people it is insulting? Do you want to deliberately insult the country you are visiting? No matter what country you live in, there is nothing worse than an ignorant tourist. Referring simply to the Queen, Queen Elizabeth II or the British Monarch would have been sufficient and everyone would have understood. Even you.
@vinybrazil i think everyone knew who he was talking about when he mentioned the queen of england and as such no more specific detail was required. i could introduce derogatry titles such as pompous prat or wanker but meh. to anyone who has never been to edinburgh before, take on board what the irish bloke has to say. i did and loved it
@gluthe01 are you having a laugh? Is a Scotsman supposed to accept this on the basis that everyone probably knows what he's talking about? (Which by the way, they probably don't) Its not about adding specific detail because the detail he gave was completely wrong. There is no such thing as the queen of england and to say it on the streets of EDINBURGH is a disgrace.
leith, suburb? Maybe in 1963. But now it is definatly considered in town. You don't even have to turn off princes st. Just go stright towards the omni center.

@LORDMCHUGH@LORDMCHUGH You may or may not think that all countries in the UK are "more powerful as one" I respect your belief & opinion although I disagree with it. However the point I was making was that the present Queen is not the Queen of England as quoted in the commentary she is the Queen of Great Britain & the commonwealth not just England. Imagine how many angry posts there would be from England if the commentary stated that she was Queen Elizabeth the Queen of Scotland or Wales etc
1. 45. The official residence of the Queen of England???????????? Who the F#ck is she? Perhaps you mean Queen Elizabeth who is presently the Queen of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Commonwealth (meantime) & not just England. She is officially (but mistakenly known as Queen Elizabeth the 2nd as she is the first Queen Elizabeth in Scotland. The monarch known as Queen Elizabeth the 1st was not Queen of Scotland as she ruled in the good old days when Scotland was independent.
@gluthe01 If you could be arsed reading my post correctly you will realise that I did not claim that she was the 1st Queen Elizabeth. I did say she was mistakenly known as the QE2 as she is not the second Queen Elizabeth to have sat on the throne in Scotland. I realise that you are from the 2nd most insular country on the globe & as such may find it difficult to comprehend the world beyond England. In Scotland the Royal Mail vans don't have E11R on their livery just ER for the reason above.
@rabnuds technically whilst I understand your point her title is correct as the current monarch is not Queen of Scotland or England but Queen of the United Kingdom. Even tho there has never been an Elizabeth of the UK, it was decided that the highest regal number that existed in either kingdom would be followed. Therefore Elizabeth II follows Elizabeth I. If there were a King Robert he would be Robert IV even tho there has never been one in England.(there has been three in Scotland).
@vinybrazil I undestand and agree with you. My whole point was not aimed at you but at the wind up merchant who calls himself gluthe01. I agree wholeheartedly with all your previous posts on this subject. It is the fact that some people genuinely believe that her correct title is Qof E & refer to Britain as Enlgand, but I think that gluthe01 is doing a bit of winding up of us Scots. It is however, a litlle disconcerting that some people are indeed so jaw droppingly blinkered.
@rabnuds in 1603 James VI of Scotland inherited the thrown of England when Elizabeth I died. However, Scotland and England remained separate independent kingdoms who simply shared the same monarch & as a result James became the first such king of England. This was known as the Union of the Crowns and it continued until 1707 when Scotland and England united to form Great Britain. The titles of King of Scotland/England ceased to exist at this point & the monarch was titled King/Queen of Gr. Britain
@rabnuds exactly what was good about those days? I understand that most people in Scotland lived miserable lives, and that the vast majority would have had no conception of the idea of "Scotland" and would have not cared at all even if they had. There was nothing independant about Scotland - it was a collection of feuding principalities (clans), who spent most of their time killing each other. As did the English. Independance? From what, the feudal lord?
@rabnuds YOU ARE SO CORRECT THE ROYAL FAMILY ARE EXPENSIVE PARASITES.ELIZABETH DOES A GOOD JOB ,BUT HER FAILY LET HER DOWN. ROLE ON INDEPEDENCE EDINBURGH IS BEAUTIFUL, I STAY 50 MILES AWAY IN THE SCOTTISH BORDERS.
