It's like with humans. Give hamsters their favorite treats and they go chubbier and live shorter, or keep them on a diet and they live longer. The question will always be quality of life. Hamsters are quite content only eating, sleeping and nesting. While others are more into running in wheels. Some hamsters just get fat no matter what you do, while others stay slender. Like humans. It definitely doesn't have to be cruelty to animals.

i have a hugely fat syrian hamster and he always bites me. My dwarf NEVER bites, but she doesn't let you poke her when she's eating. if you do, she just runs and hides underneath her wheel.

Horzew is right.... Chocolate might kill a hamster... I have two hamsters- One is male hs name is Teddy Cinnamon Bun. And the other one is a girl. Her name is Magpie.

There are special chocolate treats that can be bought that are safe for animals. In my local pet shop I've bought them in the past and my hamsters have had no problems with it (except Charlie, he prefers the yoghurt flavour rather than the chocolate one!). :)
