  • This is nothing, go to a video with Ron Cherry at a college football game and you will guarantee laughter. LOL !

  • Lol early 2000s/1990s

  • @ionn513 this was not early 2000's or the 1990's. It was 1986

  • I like how thats not even the head referee lol

  • Man I miss nothingtoxic.....

  • For people in the future, this was before the NFL added another F making it National Flag Football League in order to protect their players.

  • HAHAHA thats all i have to say

  • #99 was Mark Gastineau...not Marty Lyons #93 (the guy punching Jim Kelly)

  • ref said number 99 when the player in question was number 93

  • @7mikethebike 99 was Mark Gastineau and 93 was Marty Lyons....Gastineau got alot of shit from the refs because he was a jerk and nobody could stand him

  • that should be a penalty name

  • I'd say Ndamukong Suh gave Evan Dietrich-Smith the business today in the Lions-Packers game!

  • He was giving him the bussiness

    Or the works

    or the clock

  • He was giving him the bussiness

    Or the works

    or the clock

  • they should just make it an official penalty now and fine the fuck out of them.........

  • Did you see Jim Kelly sweep 99? Jim Kelly has mad jiu-jitsu skills.

  • This ref said it funnier than the college ref

  • I dont think I will ever forget that call. Classic! What ever happened to that ref anyways? Retired?

  • This happened about ten years before the other ref said that.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't blame Marty. Kelly must have kicked him in the nutsack to piss him off like that. Marty was a Walter Payton Player of the Year winner, anyone gonna tell me that he just went balistic like that for no reason?

  • So which one came first? This one or the college one?

  • @ieprince this one

  • Good ole football

  • sometimes i wanna give my boss the business

  • I wish all refs were like that

  • Thumbs up if you just came from"Best football penalty ever",

  • "he's giving him the business down there" *makes fisting motion* hahah

  • Another victory... for Jets

  • this had to be jim kelly's rookie season, as walter broughton and not steve tasker was wearing #89....

  • Ben Dreith. Classic.

  • he was giving him the business down there. it sounds awfully gay.

  • I remember seeing this game live. It was hilarious. Thanks for posting!

  • to bad it wasent number 69

    lol get it

  • @JAadamski /watch?v=6D8aAC4jrPM - That one wasn't, but this one was.

  • @JAadamski

In a Maryland-NC State game, the same giving him the business penalty was called, and the penalty was against #69. There are a couple video's of it on youtube.

  • 15 yards is the price for taking the QB out of a play

  • Stay the fuck up out my BIZNAZZZ

  • @L41MovieEditor i did this and i even had to enter a captcha to prove i was human on one of them

  • I always thought football fights were pointless. You are basically hitting pads and helmuts which you do anyway when you are playing.

  • "personal fowl on number 99 of the defense, after he tackled the quarterback he was giving him the business down there thats a 15 yard penalty"

  • @TomFromJersey my bad about my spellin

  • funny reff with all his ideas about the play

  • WOW!! old game!

  • His number shouldve been 69.

  • ya punch him in his helmet because u suck

  • hahaha! thats great! and hey i go to school with one of Marty Lyon's sons!

  • AWESOME!

  • GIVIN HIM THE BUSINESS DOWN THERE!

    hahahahahahahahahahahashahahahhaha

    olololololololololololololololololololololololo

    roflroflroflroflrfrflrolfroflrflrflorflrforlfrflroflrflrolrfo

    lmaoamlamaomalamlmamoamalmalamlmla

    w

  • Haha, the best is the arm motion and the specific explanation "after he tackled him" and "down there" lol

  • Rony Cherry copied him. lol

  • that's not Bernie Kukar, that's Ben Drift.

  • @regis1923 close. the guys name is Ben Dreith, one of the best NFL refs ever. Check his entry on Wikipedia

  • that's not Bernie Kukar, that's Ben Drift.

  • Haha jus imagine goimg bakk and explaining that ...."oh i got a penalty for giving him the buisness hahaa

  • Bernie Kukar! Best ref ever...I think his last game was Superbowl 36 Pats over Rams baby.

  • This is so funny

  • I gave his mom the business last night lol.

  • lol, plus New Orleans is spelled wrong at the end

  • Good old fashioned football, not getting ejected from a game just for a little rumble and apoligizing for losing your cool after.

  • so THATS what that hand signal meant... I always wondered

  • people are strangely obcessed with pre computer era TV overlays.

Sometimes I wonder if people actually appreciate how much computers have changed everything in the last 15 years.

  • its like a downward fist pump (like champs)

  • omg man look at how they show the scores so ghetto

  • @Hotforthedog

    dude, this video is OLD

you must have been born in the 90's

  • @beesneazy lol ive never seen them before that was the first time that i saw the scores like that and they look ghetto

  • @beesneazy lol @ your reply..good one

  • This could ONLY be Ben Drieth! Google 1976 Patriots-Raiders Divisional Playoff if you don't believe me. Cost the Patriots the Super Bowl that year. However, Walt Coleman ("The Tuck Rule") repaid the Raiders in full 25 years (and a few days) later.

  • @alanrdowney AWESOME.

  • 6 people were given the business!

  • @AngusGibsonT Rofl

  • How is it that in the 1980's, the ref's mic worked fine...but now, every one of them is choppy as hell?

  • its ok, im sure Jim Kelly was cursed afterwards... maybe giving someone the business also means never winning a super bowl lol

  • @bulseye111 Damn that's original. Please we can't wait to hear anymore of your gems. Only a loser would take a cheap shot like that. Give Kelly a coach like Walsh, Gibbs or Parcells and he wins at least 2 of those Super Bowls.

  • Marty Lyons was one bad ass defensive tackle!

  • Comment removed

  • I guess this penalty was named just to be funny. at first i thought of something totally different when i heard this penalty the first time some time back, and though, who the hell is so stupid to get busy on the field top ruin their career? then i realized oh

  • givin him the business down there haha

  • I just wish I could know what Jim Kelly did to piss that guy off so bad.

  • Comment removed

  • The NFL Ref making that call is the great Ben Dreith.

  • Classic. :P

  • did he get tossed?

  • ref sounded pissed the fuck off.....you know normally refs are tight and crisp with their penalty calls.......this ref looked like someone ate his jello without asking.....

  • @exodia3k3 Thats a new yorker for you

  • best call EVER

  • lol

  • someone sounds drunk

  • awesome

  • thanxs for giving us the business

  • Giving him the business is when you are on top of somebody and punching them. If you didnt already know that

  • AKA Roughing the passer

  • jaja and did you see his hand on when he was saying giving him the buisness

  • And the funny thing is the foul was on Marty Lyons, who was #93. #99 was Mark Gastineau.

  • Haha, look at the scores at the very end.

    Washington 14

    New Oleans 6

  • Falcons were shut out!

  • ahhh, yeah, when New Orleans wasn't very good, and Washington wasn't all that bad, almost in the Superbowl that season; made it the next year, and destroyed Elway and Denver...

  • @dtrinc

New Oleans...not New Orleans, New Oleans

  • good catch! :)

  • that was gay.

  • Greatest call of all time!

  • none of your business

  • what year was this game??

  • 1986.

  • "giving him the buisness down there (makes fisting motions)" wtf

  • that shit is priceless........he was punching em in da ballsac down there and thats shit aint right! 15 yards on the fella in the green, now say your sorry asshole!

  • i like the refs enthusiasm when he said it

  • Hey, I remember this when it happened.

Giving someone "the business" used to mean when you merely annoyed someone verbally. (e.g., teasing or similar).

  • lol funny reff

  • This speaks to me on so many levels...

  • That should be a real call juat because it sounds funny

  • LOL yea that would be great.

  • it is a real call.

  • it is a real caal

  • lol

  • The ref's arm movements made it even better.

  • wait, this game involved NC State and Maryland

  • no jets and bills can you read?

  • The NFL used the "65 retirement age" as their reason for getting rid of Dreith. Dreith sued on grounds of age discrimation and a few years later he and the NFL agreed to an out of court settlement. Word has in from the NFL front office it was worth every cent of the settlement to be rid of him.

Check out his name under Wikipedia to learn more.

  • This is retired referee Ben Dreith. The NFL forced Dreith to retire in 1990 due to its retirement policy of officials who reach age 65 - though it was believed by most that the NFL really didn't enforce this. Dreith was the first, leading many to believe the NFL simply wanted to be rid of him. This "giving him the business" call was not close to the being the first embarrassing thing Dreith did during his 30 years in pro football - the first 15 being with the old AFL....

  • embarrassing? I thought it was great. ref showed great emotion too

  • He was an all right referee, but I always felt when he refereed Cleveland Browns games, all the calls went against the Browns and the Browns would lose. I used to nickname him the "Anti Cleveland Brown Referee." And yes, I am a diehard Cleveland Browns fan.

  • lol, i thought the NFL only hired 65 and older!

  • lol

  • I saw another video where an official says this too. Not sure who it is. Some orange team; hard to tell. Oh and it was on number 69. No joke.

  • Maryland vs. NC St.

It was against #69 on Maryland.

  • yeah that was funny

  • #69? My word, but that's a sexual position!

  • it was on nc state

-the official was ron cherry and he was making fun of this call

  • It was Ron Cherry, ACC ref during an NC State/Maryland game.

  • NCSU vs MARYLAND

  • @doowoppingchainsawer Pretty sure that was Ncaa, just watched it =)

  • @doowoppingchainsawer i believe you....because i just watched it....and indeed it was a number 69 on the offense.....hard to believe and funny at first glance..but this is a real penalty...

  • @exodia3k3 There is no such penalty called "giving him the buissness" lol. It's called unneccesary roughness. The ref just said that because of all of the confusion.

  • @richig761 yes i know. *Giving him the business* stated by the ref, is his justification for the Unneccesary Roughness penalty.

  • @doowoppingchainsawer /watch?v=_W3byfdFpnw&feature=related

  • @doowoppingchainsawer It was on NC State. They were playing maryland. NC State AND Maryland are red

  • @doowoppingchainsawer it was maryland and north carolina state

  • @doowoppingchainsawer it was NC state and someone.

  • THE JETS WIN!

  • I have got that penalty lol

  • this ref loves his job!

  • LOL!!!!

  • poor Jim Kelly

  • AHAHAHAH giving him the business(demonstrating punches) ahahaha!

  • giving him the business isn't punching him in the crotch... it's punching him in the space between the bars of his mask.

  • giving him the business just means roughing him up

  • lol ok :]

  • it used to mean teasing someone or otherwise giving him a hard time verbally. like wally cleaver used to complain that eddie haskell was giving him the business.

  • well not sure how that applies to this video or my 6 month old comment that you replied to 9 hours ago, but thanks

  • Well, this time I replied in 9 minutes. Is that an improvement?

And the comment is an explanation of the origin of the expression "giving the business". That's how it applies. Was that "out of bounds"?

  • Are you on drugs? Nobody was talking about the "origin" of the expression, I was explaining to the kiddos what he meant by it. You're on here giving useless information that's not relevant to anything going on, now you want to give me a hard time because your irrelevant fact session that nobody cares about? Try answering a question instead of correcting someone who wasn't wrong in the first place, and being an ignorant know-it-all jackass. Have a nice day jerkoff.

  • I didn't realize that you had appointed yourself the judge of the "usefulness" of the comments. It's YouTube, friend; it's not an oral exam at university. It's supposed to be fun. The video we're watching is humorous, so I got humorous too, with a direct tie-in to the TITLE of the video. You're pretty irate over a comment which you took the trouble to point out is 6 months old, so who's on drugs? Where in my 1st comment did I correct you? I added something, corrected nothing.

    Spaz out much?

  • relax buddy 57highland was right...

  • not worked up man, I'm not saying he was wrong the question was what did the referee mean by giving him the business, I answered what the ref meant, not the origin or any other such random fact that had nothing to do with what the ref was talking about. what it used to mean is a story for another persons question, not the question I answered, while I was trying to be helpful.

  • well he did have a good explaination

  • save that shit for your mother I don't care, I answered a question and got replies through the youtube comment section of that fucktard not understanding the relevance of answering a question posed, instead of harping like a little bitch about something that has nothing to do with the conversation, and now you're doing it too so grats on being another fucktard, nobody fucking cares dude, go find a cock to suck on or something, instigating shit on behalf of a dumbass makes you a fucking loser

  • fucktard, what are you 8, im not the one who got put on blast buddy....children, make me laugh

  • jeez... you gave him the buisness

  • Giving him the business in football i think meen a cheap shot to the gonads. thats my best thought

  • did he say say 99? it was 93 i thought?...

  • i love the way the ref demonstrates it!!!!!!!!!!

  • "givin him the business down there" ahaha lol

  • Damn, if only refs in the NFL these days were that enthusiastic lol

  • If only more fouls involved the words "giving","business", and "down there"

  • giving him the business lol

  • dat shud be a penalty call like a real wun lol i wud laugh evry time i hear it

  • BEST PENALTY NAME EVER. gIVEN HIM THE BUSINESS

  • The arm gestures is wat makes it so funny

  • i was at the game. i would never forget that call. i thought it was a joke. people around me started to question the call, we wanted the jets player ejected.

  • duhhhhh, lets fight with helmets on. we are smart!

  • HAHAHAHA
