I'm half Wicomico and I found this very interesting because I grew up detached from Native culture and I always felt it was wrong to cut my hair, good to trim it but cutting it is like removing branches from a tree, only unhealthy parts should be removed. A few times I have compulsively cut it short and always regretted it and a year ago I resolved not to cut it anymore, but to heal it and trim it.
I'm Native American and even tho I was raised by a white family, my hair has always been important to me. I always felt proud of my long black hair and it's my best feature. My mom never forced me to cut it and she always made sure I knew about the culture I came from. I think it's in our blood to have pride for our hair.
THANK YOU for this video native americans are always forced to abandon their "ways" im glad im growing my hair out its wonderfuly soft straight and getting longer... thanks you heritage
@HotTherapy101 This happened at an elementary school in San Jose, California. This video was later used in assemblies at the child's school to educate the every student in school about the significance of hair to the Indigenous People.
We produced this show by request. Peggy came to us and asked if there was anything we could do to help her get this message out.
Things like this are done out of ignorance...lack of education. Peggy is working at going to as many schools as possible to educate
@HotTherapy101 Peggy is working at going to as many schools as possible to hold assemblies, using this video along with question and answer sessions to help explain why what happened was wrong.
We know there are people who don't care... but if we can educate the children and let them know why this is so important to our people, then maybe we're taking a step in the right direction.
Hopefully they will pass down what they have learned, just as it was down by our elders.
I have had many strangers (females) touch my hair in public and I feel its a invasion of my culture. and I have always thought of my hair as sacred even when I was made fun of by other non native children in school ! i have also had elderly men and women that are non native make comments that I should cut my hair and it offends me I glad this video was made to explain the signifigance of OUR hair!
Well this should be considered Mayhem, it is not just hair. It is our Spirituality. The logic of the Swine. My 9 year old sun wear two long Lakota braids. We are Lakota, The Wasicu and their likes are so stupid, and hateful. Our hair absorbs our spirituality , and maintains our spirituality.
just think about all those children who was made to cut their hair..the europeans the n knew that our hair tied us to our traditions and balances in life..in order to assimilate us first was to cut our hair..or cut us from what t tied us together as a people like a braid of sweet grass...so sad....wado
This explains alot about the reasons hair is a sacred thing. This video will serve to provide education on Native culture, and in turn bring about more respect. Thanks Steve. Another good movie. Our respect and regards to Adam and his family too.
Beautiful Video :)

When you were compulsive... YOU knew it.
See from within...relax, and who is it that had the regrets.
Don't try to figure out why... just see who.
