I heard this wonderful song, many years ago and i thought that it was debbie harry that i had heard. I have just found this, and the poppy family, so i think i was mistaken about blondie. I just wonder if she ever recorded it.!
Hoffs sounds good, but she's both older than and less soulful sounding than a younger(at the time) Ronstadt. Her range is a bit narrower, too, and the music could use a little more bass to make up for it. Still a good performance by Susanna.
@jjohnson3469 Have to say I disagree! I've just listened to Linda Ronstadt's version and though good, I prefer Susanna Hoffs' version!! Sounds more rounded and in control to me...
Susanna a chubby butt? Sorry that's not true and I wonder if you're looking at the same woman I'm looking at. As for her voice...it's probably just as pure and true as Ronstadt's. If you had a chance to hear both ladies in concert you might understand this. As I said, this is a perfect song for Ms. Hofs because she can sing it in the traditional way because her voice is within her musical range of the original song. I hardly think that's a reason to be critical.
Susanna sings Different Drums just fine. The music range is perfect for her voice and while I happen to like Linda Ronstadt very much, I don't think I belittle my approval of Linda by saying Ms. Hofs sings the song just as well. Why shouldn't Susanna sing this song when it is so perfect for her voice?
Man I would love to be able to turn back the clock to about 1975 and see Linda Ronstadt sitting in with the Bangles singing this song. With the sheer beauty and sound of those two sirens together, I would probably be dead from a heart attack.
I think she is great, but she is doing Linda Ronstadt arrangement. And she is doing it very well. Even with technology 40 years newer than Linda had, she does not equal Linda. The writer of the song, Mike Nesmith recorded the song and he did not come close to Linda’s success. Mikes arrangement is here on You Tube also, I think the ladies have out done him on his own song.
Even with the over the top production, she just doesn't have the voice to match Linda Ronstadt's soaring, effortless vocals (which were recorded in one take). Still a charming song though.
@wheatonna According to WIKI, Rickenbacker guitars were originally called Electro but changed to Rickenbacker to take advantage of founders (Adolph Rickenbacker) distant relative WW1 flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker's name. Anyway their really cool guitars.
@phddddd If that's a subtle way of saying I should of left out the rest of the comment? Then all I got to say is; "if I wanted your help, I would have asked for it".
@MrMansterdawg Actually, i was trying to gently correct your mis-use of English. When you make something public in words there is a modest expectation of a certain command over the language you are using. To use the possessive "their" when you meant the pronoun and verb "they are" demonstrates that you might just be an idiot and not worth reading.
@phddddd Sorry professor, I have a hard time distinguishing between Y.T. comments and my doctorate. If I had a nickel for every typo on Y.T., I'd really be rich, and you'd be dead from a heart attack. If I may be so bold, why not just let everyone on Y.T. be themselves in spite of their flaws. It is called good genes but money help's alot, when you can have plastic surgery, personal trainers and great health care we all would look great. But i can show you some natural 50 somthings that look just as great.
Wow. She's got the voice to almost make it as good as the original. No knock to her, as if she sang it first, I'd say the same about Linda Ronstadt. Both are awesome.
Well you're free to disagree of course. But "always at least a 100% improvement"?!?!!? I detect a very strong pre-conceived singer-songer writer bias on your part. I would love to take three different artists doing the same song w/o you knowing who the original artist is and see how often your results would come up "100%" in such a blind test. I suspect you would be surprised.
yeah but as an old codger from the 60s and 70s this sort of music is nostalgic for a laugh checkout the easybeats i was 12 when these were popular in oz. great music
found out the monkeys are going on tour and stumbled onto this song written by michael nesmith before he joined the monkeys, its great by linda rondstadt, tho' this version with susanna is brill she was fit years ago and blimey she still does it for me
Just listened to Linda Ronstadt's original version before listening to this one and I have to say: Hoff sounds like a muppet on helium compared to Rondstadt. It's almost comical.
I once listened to a concert where Sting sang on stage with Pavarotti. Sting's voice sound ludicrous compared to the opera singer. Does that mean Sting has a crappy voice? My point is a simple one: Trying to compare two singers in almost any context is pointless; comparing singers from different eras and who are different ages is patently silly. One either likes the music or one doesn't. Comparing the two is childish nonsense.
Susanna Hoffs Nailed this song.... Awesome.. Lovely and simply Beautiful...How could one not get chills when they hear it... As a matter of fact (not that any one would ever argue the point) she is also Beautiful... What a combination...
Im a fan of susanna since the first note I heard from her. Liked every arrangement of every song as well. I like lindas version plenty. and I like the original by Mike. It's just a good song
Over produced and it sounds like a late 60's British pop song - in fact it sounds like MOST late 60's British pop songs! There's even a bit of Eleanor Rigby chucked in. Nesmith still dominates this song - and Ronstadt treats it with respect AND does a great version.
I REALLY like Susanna Hoffs...and she's a beauty. I also love her voice on certain songs....However....her voice doesn't compare to Ronstadt's (and she was quite the hottie too).

I REALLY like Susanna Hoffs...and she's a beauty. I also love her voice on certain songs....However....her vice doesn't compare to Ronstadt's (and she was quite the hottie too).
if she didnt look so hot would the song sound so good... not bad but not as good as the original released when the lyrics made more sense, freedom and liberation and hope of the late 1960s
Read all 271 comments, I'll put in my 10 cents worth. The Ronstadt has the pipes, sings with or without soul, like or dislike, this version or that version, she has the pipes. Comparing these two ladies is a disservice to both. Hoffs recorded this in her 40's, The Ronstadt was 18 to 22. Todays recording equipment, has many years of recording experience supporting it, compared to 60's equipment. So comparing the sound of one to the other is moot. Don't knock the talent of either of these ladies.
@TivrocSaig I'm pretty much in total agreement. I like Kind'as voice a bit better but the production value of this cover is pretty damn good and I like Susanna for her own vocal style.
@TivrocSaig Also Linda Rhonstadt sang this song while with The Stone Poneys; not the best of bands at the time. I agree, both these ladies did a SUPERB job with this song! Just my 2 Cents worth! :^)
Had the 45 as a kid, played it to death. Never knew til now about the writer...Mike Nesmith. WOW..Well, I think Linda R is way to way out left, and will take this cover of the song as my absolute favorite. Way over Linda R. (Was this the gal who sang 'Manic Monday'?)
WOW!!! one of the best covers ever!!!! Susannah's voice is perfect it was like hearing it again for the first time Susannah is one of the coolest rock chicks ever!!!
@TheWeddingProducer - She does a decent vocal, but the background vocals spoil it, and the borderline rock & roll arrangement also sounds ridiculous beside the original, which had that beautiful harpsichord.
Lindas KILLS this version, shes OK but if you were a MAN you'd understand. She reaches the parts few other Female singers can. If you have ever had your heart broken by a Butterfly you'd know.
Sorry but Suzanna voice suffer a lot if put together with Linda Rondstadt . She try to do her best, but don't have the notes and the possibilities in her chords .
whats not to love about susan.great voice, looks, body and---shes a real rocker!i used to hate covers because i thought that the people couldn't come up with there own music.when i listen to this i know that covers are kool.i just loved the bangles and thought "manic monday" was a great rock tune.susan doesn't need my validation, she sure has 100%.
I love both versions. I think both singers are supremely talented. Hoffs chooses a narrower range of material, mainly rock, pop and post-punk, and does unfailingly high-caliber work with it.
Ronstadt covers rock, pop, punk, country, classical, folk, Mexican traditional, jazz standards ... she takes BIG chances in her choice of material. Some of it works exquisitely, some is just fine, and some doesn't work as well.
You are the sort of person who probably likes singer song writers. Fair enough but don;t expect the people who enjoy shall enjoy we call it more exciting music to agree with you.Enjoy listening to Ronstadt & the rest.
Add me to the list of those that think Susanna's is the best version of Mike's song. And agree that she is the most beautiful woman ever. Recent pictures bear that out.
I have to admit Susanna's version of this song is sexier than Linda Ronstadt's, which I used to think was one of my favorite songs of all time. Not any more, though!
Linda Ronstadt own this one.

Great Song! I LOVE THIS GIRL!!!

Just checked out all the other versions of this song on youtube. None of them come close to this great version.
The rhythm section just moves this song along and Hoffs vocal with backups are fantastic.

@Schtang777 Yes but the drumming and the mix sound too modern to my ears.It cut something natural that ios on the Linda original version

Sorry but Suzanna voice suffer a lot if put together with Linda Rondstadt . She try to do her best, but don't have the notes and the possibilities in her chords .

you may be limiting the scope a bit, but yeah, agreed.

Wow - that picture at 47 seconds holding the guitar with her eyes closed. I think I'm in love.

whats not to love about susan.great voice, looks, body and---shes a real rocker!i used to hate covers because i thought that the people couldn't come up with there own music.when i listen to this i know that covers are kool.i just loved the bangles and thought "manic monday" was a great rock tune.susan doesn't need my validation, she sure has 100%.

Excellent! That's the best version of Different Drum I've heard. I like Ronstadt's just fine, but I like this one better.

Different approaches. Music is a great thing!

You are the sort of person who probably likes singer song writers. Fair enough but don;t expect the people who enjoy shall enjoy we call it more exciting music to agree with you.Enjoy listening to Ronstadt & the rest.

Right. This is the very best version of this song, and my favorite song by SH. It's an injustice that the other two version are better known.

I like Ronstadt's version better..it holds more memories for me. But I've got to say, this is an amazing cover! I adore this song, great lyrics. :)

Susanna = Schwing!!

What a great version (best yet). Susanna Hoffs most beautiful woman ever

She's seriously lovely and I had many an intimate moment with her in my younger days (if you catch my drift)
Still prefer the Lemonheads version after the original.
