It seems that their logic is that they 'seem' to believe breeding that allows a recessive trait to express itself is akin to breeding a deformity. Thats like saying human 'AB' blood type, if rare in most of the world is a deformity in those countries where it's expression becomes more dominant in a given population.

My brother works at Grassmere in Nashville. While yes, they do horrible things to the unwanted white tigers, don't completely be upset with zoos if they keep the pretty ones. The "pretty" ones who are deemed prefect for show, are actually being researched to find what genes are make the "white gene" and then try to breed with dominate genes. (I think 2 recessive genes make one dominate gene, right? lol) So yeah. Part of it is really horrible. But it's to benefit for something better.

A ressessive gene means that color morph is there just as in many other animals, as is the means for ablino animal colorations. Deformities can be caused by poor nutrition as well as or in combination with inbreeding. The crossed eyed trait is common to white tigers yet does not usually occur in white tigers native to India. When cross eyed tigers give birth to the more common orange and black color morph, those young do not exhibit cross eyed-ness. perhaps some of your information is outdated.
There is a population of white tigers in the wild, the Siberian white tiger, dwindling yet still exist. "Google them". Ressive gene or not we have a responcibility to preserve & save Tigers & all wildlife '. Stop inbreeding YES. I am so glad I came across this video! Chicago's Navy Pier is going to display white tigers until February and I wanted to research about whether or not there is cruelty in that. These poor animals are kept in captivity for the entertainment of ignorant humans. I will NOT be attending that tiger display!

This is really sad. I'm wondering if the same applies to white lions? I am not entirely sure it does, because white lions aren't anywhere near as popular as white tigers. At least I rarely see white lions in the zoos.
When you do it on purpose, in captivity, you're essentially saying "I know that these cubs will have a greater chance of being deformed and ill and might have to be euthanised, but I don't care." They're not a separate species, just a rare colour morph. There are way fewer people with red hair, say, than brown hair, but we're not separate species. Just because there are -some- healthy white tiger cubs doesn't mean the majority of them don't have to be euthanised.
But inbreeding comes at a cost. It cripples the diversity of the gene pool and you have a much greater frequency of health issues and genetic defects. By inbreeding generation after generation, you're basically asking for tigers to be unhealthy or deformed in exchange for their white fur. That's why white tigers in the wild are okay: it happens every once in a while and it doesn't hurt the gene pool, even if a couple tigers inbreed.
White tigers, just like white lions, are a result of the expression of a recessive gene. Every once in a while, in the wild, two tigers with the gene will mate (grossly oversimplifying this, of course) and you get a white tiger. Because the gene is recessive, there is only a small chance it will be expressed. But if you breed a father tiger with the gene with his daughter, you've greatly increased your chances of getting a white tiger. Now, it's easy to inbreed for a recessive trait...

I'm sure there have been some unscrupulous breeders wayyyyy back in the day. But as with any breeding most breeders keep track of their animals lineage to prevent inbreeding.

The white tiger is homozygous (recessive), and will ONLY produce white tiger cubs if bred to a female that carries the homozygous (recessive gene). If bred to a heterozygous female that does not carry the homozygous gene, the offspring will be heterzygous (orange etc.) but carry the homozygous (white) gene.

I had no idea, I knew that white tigers didn't survive in the wild and I knew that they were created by recessive genes, but I had NO idea that they were actually BRED to be that way by humans, for some reason I thought the white tigers in things like zoos or animal reservations were saved from the wild. I had no idea the cruelty that goes into making my favorite animal. They are beautiful, without a doubt, but at what cost?

So, that being said, it's possible for them to be born in the zoo, and being born in the zoo gives them a chance to actually survive; unlike in the wild. And that's exactly what happens with animals too, that's why they come out looking deformed and don't live for very long. The only way to get a white tiger is when a tiger has the white gene in them, if you have two tigers that have the white gene then it's a 25% chance they'll produce white offspring. It's just easier to get a white tiger if they mate with their own family instead of finding another white tiger

You can't "donate" genes. Parents genes are passed on in eggs and sperm, you can't just select out particular genes. A person could use another person's egg/sperm but then it would not be their child.

E. Coli is also vastly different than any eukaryote organism. Trying to do that with eukaryotes you will end up with lots of times that it just doesn't work, lots of times that the fetus undergoes complete programmed cell death and then when it works you might still get a baby born with other defects besides the one you were trying to avoid. Basic newborn screening is standard already among developed nations, I'm not implying we map entire genomes for every individual, of course that would be expensive and unecessary. Only common genetic conditions, checking both parents. Treatment itself is a whole other conversation, with a variety of options.

P.S. white tigers do not have an 80% infant mortality rate.the infant mortality rate for white tigers is no higher than it is for normal orange tigers bred in captivity.
I'm not totally sure about this, I mean, maybe it's true, and maybe it's not. Either way white tigers will be born anyway, if you think about it. Maybe not as often in the wild, but they are not protected due to their habitat; in captivity though, they are much safer and protected because they have no predetors to attack their young, SO! to conclude my rant, white tigers are RARE! Defects in white tigers are honestly really rare. Severe inbreeding can cause complications, but white tigers that are bred now-a-days really aren't inbred - they're enough down the line that they're not affected; they can be bred to an unrelated orange tiger that carries the recessive gene - thus it not being inbreeding, and they have not been inbred for a long time. And...I have more points to argue(can't fit) - could you please tell me any sources saying 8 of 10 cubs are killed from this?

It seems that their logic is that they 'seem' to believe breeding that allows a recessive trait to express itself is akin to breeding a deformity. My brother works at Grassmere in Nashville. While yes, they do horrible things to the unwanted white tigers, don't completely be upset with zoos if they keep the pretty ones. The "pretty" ones who are deemed prefect for show, are actually being researched to find what genes are make the "white gene" and then try to breed with dominate genes. (I think 2 recessive genes make one dominate gene, right? lol) So yeah. Part of it is really horrible. But it's to benefit for something better.

A ressessive gene means that color morph is there just as in many other animals, as is the means for ablino animal colorations. Deformities can be caused by poor nutrition as well as or in combination with inbreeding. The crossed eyed trait is common to white tigers yet does not usually occur in white tigers native to India. When cross eyed tigers give birth to the more common orange and black color morph, those young do not exhibit cross eyed-ness. perhaps some of your information is outdated.

When you do it on purpose, in captivity, you're essentially saying "I know that these cubs will have a greater chance of being deformed and ill and might have to be euthanised, but I don't care." They're not a separate species, just a rare colour morph. There are way fewer people with red hair, say, than brown hair, but we're not separate species. Just because there are -some- healthy white tiger cubs doesn't mean the majority of them don't have to be euthanised.

By inbreeding generation after generation, you're basically asking for tigers to be unhealthy or deformed in exchange for their white fur. That's why white tigers in the wild are okay: it happens every once in a while and it doesn't hurt the gene pool, even if a couple tigers inbreed.

White tigers, just like white lions, are a result of the expression of a recessive gene. Every once in a while, in the wild, two tigers with the gene will mate (grossly oversimplifying this, of course) and you get a white tiger. Because the gene is recessive, there is only a small chance it will be expressed. But if you breed a father tiger with the gene with his daughter, you've greatly increased your chances of getting a white tiger. Now, it's easy to inbreed for a recessive trait...

I'm sure there have been some unscrupulous breeders wayyyyy back in the day. But as with any breeding most breeders keep track of their animals lineage to prevent inbreeding.

The white tiger is homozygous (recessive), and will ONLY produce white tiger cubs if bred to a female that carries the homozygous (recessive gene). If bred to a heterozygous female that does not carry the homozygous gene, the offspring will be heterzygous (orange etc.) but carry the homozygous (white) gene.

So, that being said, it's possible for them to be born in the zoo, and being born in the zoo gives them a chance to actually survive; unlike in the wild. And that's exactly what happens with animals too, that's why they come out looking deformed and don't live for very long. The only way to get a white tiger is when a tiger has the white gene in them, if you have two tigers that have the white gene then it's a 25% chance they'll produce white offspring. It's just easier to get a white tiger if they mate with their own family instead of finding another white tiger

Trying to do that with eukaryotes you will end up with lots of times that it just doesn't work, lots of times that the fetus undergoes complete programmed cell death and then when it works you might still get a baby born with other defects besides the one you were trying to avoid. Oh, and its going to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Basic newborn screening is standard already among developed nations, I'm not implying we map entire genomes for every individual, of course that would be expensive and unecessary. Only common genetic conditions, checking both parents. Treatment itself is a whole other conversation, with a variety of options.

@lachicadevica more over, using the arguement that there are no wild white tigers is also false. there have been documented instances of wild born white tigers in the past, though perhaps not "pure" white.
Many industries, such as animal husbandry and horse breeding, often use very small stocks of a breed with a positive characteristic to interfamily breed to bring out a desired trait.
This is a safe practice when done correctly, but to do so requires alot of financial investment and time.

All these "truth about white tigers" videos on are exagurated
some white tigers have been inbred because of their rarity. The chances of a white tiger in the wild is extremely rare, not impossible.its a gene. And some zoos breed two white tigers which might have been related so some white tigers are inbred others are not.
P.S. white tigers do not have an 80% infant mortality rate.the infant mortality rate for white tigers is no higher than it is for normal orange tigers bred in captivity.

I'm not totally sure about this, I mean, maybe it's true, and maybe it's not. Either way white tigers will be born anyway, if you think about it. Maybe not as often in the wild, but they are not protected due to their habitat; in captivity though, they are much safer and protected because they have no predetors to attack their young, SO! to conclude my rant, white tigers are RARE! I think it is cruel to cause it unnaturally, but they are not totally just a creature caused by man.

@lynn1381 only 1 in about 30,000 tiger cubs will be white in the wild. It's a genetic DEFECT. Mothers in the wild will kill white cubs because they know it won't be able to camouflage itself. Yes, in captivity they will be protected, but it's still a DEFECT. They shouldn't be bred, no matter how beautiful, because it weakens the gene pool.

Defects in white tigers are honestly really rare. Severe inbreeding can cause complications, but white tigers that are bred now-a-days really aren't inbred - they're enough down the line that they're not affected; they can be bred to an unrelated orange tiger that carries the recessive gene - thus it not being inbreeding, and they have not been inbred for a long time. And...I have more points to argue(can't fit) - could you please tell me any sources saying 8 of 10 cubs are killed from this?

No matter how happy they are, she demands that they all be dead - or in the wild, and since they're saying white tigers are not natural in the wild, that they simply must be killed off.

You are all idiots you can't inbreed a tiger coloration strain for 62 years it is impossible and even if you could almost all of them would have potent birth defects. White tigers are not in the wild anymore, this is true because their coloration is recessive to other colorations introduced into the breed.
