I wish unto the heavens I had been born during this era. My voice is so suited to the songs and their manner of singing. Now? With those such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga, etc...I feel no one would want to really hear this sweet and sultry style of expression. Way back machine..take me!
one of my favorite songs of billie holiday.... you can feel the sadness of the song... you can feel shes crying...you can feel the deep emotion inside...
i like this song =D not normally my type of genre or music but i like it, ever since seein the chanel advert about 10000 timesa a day on tv its very suited =] stylish =p x
I heard this song in the Chanel commercial and I fell in love with it. It reminds me of a guy I like and I can relate to it so much. It's truly a great song.
Ok, now who was the deranged fool who disliked this song??? Oh well, I guess we can forgive him/her right guys? The mouse probably slipped and pressed the dislike button accidentally lol
I think Frank and Billie would be sad to hear people argue about who sang the best version of this beautiful song.Just sit back and enjoy either version from the best female and male singer of all.I do.
@seishsmom What total bollocks! Billie Holiday came from nothing with a voice that cannot be matched even today, Amy Winehouse was a middle class buffoon with a mediocre voice and little talent. end of story...
@incasilver Nonsense. Both had remarkable vocal tones and many comparisons can be (and have been) justifiably drawn. Two differences are that Billie had a croaky voice for a lot of her career, and had an incredibly narrow vocal range for such a mainstream jazz artist. I suspect that you're one of these music snobs who (claim in public to) dislike Amy simply because she's contemporary and popular amongst a wider audience than simply jazz fans.
@armand372100: i agree with you, sinatra's version is the best ever rendition of this song, you can feel the tears in his voice ... billie holliday's version is good but shouldn't be compared to sinatra, it doesn't move me as sinatra's version does ...
I certainly respect your opinion and also love Billie Holliday. As you know, Sinatra loved and respected her for the great artist she was and in some ways emulated her singing. Music is a very personal thing and for me, Sinatra in his rendition of this song evokes a poignancy that to me, is unsurpassed.
@armand372100 I am posting this because you posted the pretty much same comment twice. why so obsessed with Sinatra's version being the best. I heard this song for the first time today paying my full attention to the song. and so far I liked the Holiday's verstion most. and I guess this is just a matter of taste. why have to ruin the good air over so unimportant thing? I guess it will be much more productive for youself and nice for the people here if you go onto Sinatra's
@shimotsumanominamo Some Sinatra fans tend to be very insecure, trolling clips of other singers who've recorded the same songs as he. For someone to claim that his is "better" than Billie's, especially, is ridiculous, especially considering that he learned his phrasing, the best part of his talent, from Billie.
@TheReturnOfStephan1 Your absolutely right about that! Frank, before he met Billie was a huge fan. They later became lovers for a brief time. His valet, George stated in his memoirs that the only time he ever saw Frank cry was when Billie and JFK died. He was REALLY torn up when she passed. Frank was also one of the last people to visit her in the hospital before she passed. Billie called him :Frankie". They were very close.
Great Lady but with all due respect, Sinatra's 1951 recording is the best version ever done. His heart is broken over Ava and it is reflected in the song. He bends the word need and when he sings the word pity, you can feel his pain. Simply put, he was the best ever.
With all due respect to Sinatra, Billie far surpasses him in this recording. Sinatra's heart may have been broken over Ava, but Billie transcends the song and transforms it into a universal lament.
@southsideny She was obviously artisically influenced by her. Great sorrow that her life mirrored Holiday's but with an even more dramatic conclusion.
looking at her bio made me respect her that much more she's been through alot of battles called life and is telling us her war stories.I always loved Patti,Jill, and Erykuh but the stories in her voice and you could hear the wear and tear the drugs had on her voice but it still came out like satin
OOOH MY!! this woman was awesome I mean is soooo awesome!! this is exactly my sentiment right now!!! what fools we are when we are in love!!! DAMN IT!!!
not to be mean or anything but I say i like Chet Baker's version of this song a bit better. This is lovely, but Bakers trumpet is so nice compliments the song perfectly... check it out before u kill me :D
When I was in grade school I would leave the room when Lady in Satin was put on the Stereo. It just scared the shit outta me. It had the chill of a morgue I imagined. Today its a different experience to listen to this particular song, The artistry and the raw truth of this longing to be loved. Her voice was gone but this one works at a very high level of storytelling. Awesome. Stirring. Oddly healing.
@loulou2lou and boheme...absolutely right. neither of them ever sang a note they didn't mean or feel to the very core. It resonates, very lacking now-a-days.
@loulou2lou I saw Judy Garland on tv before she died. I think around Christmas of 1969 she came to Lowell Massachusetts to see her one time manager for the holidays. I am from Lowell, Mass. My heart was broken to see her trying to keep her composure while singing the song she was singing. I will not judge her, because I did not walk in her shoes.
I saw long time ago a documental about her life, someone said ¨I have always feel sorry for the people that listen to her and can´t feel the pain and sorrow in her voice!!!¨,......that is such a big truth,..... I don´t think any other singer would be able to sing with this sadness , and make it sound so beautifull!!!!!
one off recording that will never be repeated, after only a few bar's of her voice i can feel the tear's starting to come and i bet i'm not the only one.
