hahaha .... wow ..... as a drummer who has played this song ( like the record ) a million times live i just laughed and laughed through this whole video .... LOVE IT .... balls of steel on these guys ..this is what jazz is about .. expanding and improvising on ideas and themes yes , but more than that jazz is about taking risks .
whoa. this is trippy. it's an amazing band and arrangement, but it's kind of hard to listen to! lol. no disrespect. it is what it is, but this is such a groove song that when they extend the phrases out all weird like that, it frustrating to listen to. all in all, it's pretty damn cool.
On one hand, kudos for doing a cover version that you guys have made your own. On the other hand, a big "Boo" for stripping all of the great funk feel out of this tune. This just isn't for me, even if the chops are great.
man gotta love all the haters... fuck them tim! sound good man i see what your trying to emphasize on the melody that everyone is bitchin about... the video doesnt have the best sound quality which doesnt deal well for lots of active drumming and lots of notes... your very on top of the beat which makes it feel like its moving forward or rushing a bit but i beleive thats what your going for.. word man i dont necesarily phrase like that so props to you homey...fuck the haters and keep playing.
Gosh you people are so fing closeminded. Jazz is supposed to do the unexpected. This is an amazing arrangement. What is sloppy about it? Sounds like the music sounds exactly how he wanted it to sound. Ugh.
you cant do this song this way..the song is about rythem and the groove....it doesnt sound clean and tight..it sounds like some mixed up jazz interpretation..the players are ok...but my god you cant keep time with this..the drums are all wrong..they overtake everything..you all are good players but this arrangement is just a mess.
It sounds clean and tight to me. I think the thing that's bothering you is the meter, which they changed here by making it one eighth-note longer (2+2+2+3). Sure, it's a little harder to snap your fingers to, but that's not the point here. The drums are closest to the video camera, so they sound louder. You say it sounds like some mixed up jazz interpretation- that's because it IS! Maybe jazz trios aren't your kind of music, but try not to dismiss something you don't know about.
with all due respect and no disrespect im 36 i started in orchestra in 1985 im 36 and im still playing bass..in music there are counts for time common time you name it..this music in its whole to me is a mess, if i listen to each instruemtn they are hitting the right note3s its the time is off..now if this is a new thing people like doing thats great but its not an art i support, in my 24 years ive played and been exposed to many differnt art forms..but this isnt anything i coul;d deal with.
Hey, I'm sure you know a lot about music. No arguments there. I'm just suggesting that maybe this might not be the kind of music you have a lot of experience with. (Have you played a lot of music with "additive meter"? or in a jazz trio such as this?) If not, then it might be hard to tell what's happening meter-wise. This group has changed the song from its original meter (4/4) to an irregular meter (2+2+2+3/8). The key signature is irregular, but they are playing in time with it.
It's because in Orchestra it's all technical. Jazz....you can throw technical out the window thats greatest thing about it, you don't have to play it exactly the way Stevie Wonder played it. I bet he would've thought this was a decent arrangement. Not the greatest but better than most of us couldve done. This jazz, you can do whatever u want with a song within the guidelines that it makes sense. Much different from Orchestral music
Dear my good sir, You seen to have spelled "rythem" wrong. The "e" should be changed to a "y," thus spelling "rythym." Thank you and have a merry Kwanzaa
thats joe gilman on piano. I had him as a music theory teacher. he is the piano instructor at the Dave brubeck institute at UOP california. He is now the pianist in the bobby hutcherson quartet. BAD ASS MAN>

What's going on with the drummer at the beginning. Sounds like he's stoned or something. Terrible over playing on the drums. The rest of the group sounds great but this drummer is everything wrong with jazz. yuck.
Killer arrangement and killer musicians. It is real, for those who seem to be looking for some kind of "dubbing conspiracy". I was sitting in the front row. Anyway, it was great to see Joe, Tim, and Paul playing up in Redding.
Sounds like 9/8, which makes for a helluvalot of practice and concentration! Definitely not as catchy this way, but for players of this caliber, it's more FUN this way.
that below comment was for the person talking about how "hard" it is and how "even stevie can't play this (version)"... i mean, really, does it "have" to be in 9 or in some hard arrangement in order for it to have some validity? wtf... that's a very narrow way of looking at how music can be appreciated as it is.
This doesn't suck. It's a really cool alteration of the original. It's in 9, which is hard to do on its own. And make it sound cool at the same time is a real feat. I saw them perform this live myself, and it was rad. The piano player made two albums all based on Stevie's tunes.
If I may comment, Joe is my teacher and one of the best pianists you will ever meet. If you notice, that is Dave Brubeck sitting right behind him. Dave loves Joe as a player, one of his favorites actually. I've learned alot from Joe. Check out my vids and tell me if I'm bad....
Not my kind of music at all, but to be able to groove like that would be killer. Get beyond the genre people. The chops it takes to play like this in a band context is beyond your bedrooms.
well that is completely untrue and if you had more than a 3rd grade education you would realize that you quite possibly might be the stupidest man or woman on earth. (that is the planet we live on, in case you didnt know)
shut the hell up and go listen to some jazz...and since when are there rules against what time signature you're allowed to play in...dave brubeck switched between time signatures mid-song all the time...music is about expression, not following stupid-ass rules...also, keep in mind that this is being recorded with a crappy camera mic, not a studio full of condenser mics...

"off beat" is a subjective theory there is no such thing.
and for the "too much percussion, the camera is not perfectly placed so i guess thats why theres so much drums in your ears.
