Working in the bush cutting trees and logs was the hardest from what I read about the Gulag camps. Can you imagine you're a concert violinist and weigh 135 lbs and have never done manual labour, youve been riding in a cattle car train for 3 days without food or water and then you are hurded into the forest in 3 feet of snow and its 35 below and givenm an old axe and told to chop down some huge tree, it happend all the time, no wonder 20 million died!

It's been a long time since I read that book.

@Allanlegacy43 I'm pretty sure the book was written by Alexander Solzhenitsyn I had a small paper back copy of that book in High School, I'm not sure where I got it. If u like that sort of thing, I spend a great deal of time looking at the Nazi holocaust online. One of the best vids is a 14 part series type in "Kitty Return to Auschwitz" on YouTube if u are interested. I did 3 years in prison myself, 1 year in Supermax. It was nasty, but not like European death mills of the 1940's.

Read Antony Beever's "Stalingrad: the fateful siege" and "The Gulag Archipelago." The amount of researchable and corroborating evidence is substantial and sensible not only in these books, but on the internet, from multiple sources. As far as Native Americans, I hold no ill will towards them.

I didn't know that there was actually video of the gulags. I've been reading Anne Applebaum's "Gulag A History", and I also have 3 volumes by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn to read. It's one thing to read, but quite another to actually see this. How horrible!

Solzhenitsyn was NOT a communist. And Vorkutaman's allusion that the USSR was far from communism is rubbish. It was communism personified, taken out of ephemeral speech and put into practical application. The results speak for themselves.

The fact that most self professed "communist" countries use force to keep their citizens from fleeing should be enough evidence to dissuade anyone from heralding that paticular obscenity.
But your passion aside, though communism "looks good on paper" it remains a philophsy that needs totalitarism as it's backdrop lest it be discarded in favor of individual liberty. I know not who you are refering to with your kid and comic book analogy so I won't comment.
