Totally love the choral quality offset with a little bit of pop. I really think the lines between the two 'genres'(???) should have been mixed and blended more than they have- seems like an age or class division, when it should not be- good music is good music period, If i can enjoy some country music and opera, then most people probably could enjoy more variety, I'm kind of a cranky old buzzard when it comes to the music i'll listen to. This was good decades ago and still is.
@GlamourDutchess This is the first song in the concept album. The Game of Chess wasn't put in until it made it to Broadway. Since this is the concept album and not the OBC, The Game of Chess isn't in it.
When I first heard this album as I kid I was totally turned off by this song, I thought, what the hell is this corny stuff? I didn't get that was what musicals were like. I loved the synth rock stuff but now I love the whole album, I finally got it after a few months of listening to it.
Why are people complaining about the 80s sound and the rock singing? One of the reasons why Chess is so popular these days is because it cleverly combines different vocal and instrumental styles!
Personally my favourite song, along side Pity the 'Singer' and Anthem :D thanks for putting up
You're right. That's the most stunning thing about this musical - thet it encompasses so many musical styles - and all of it written by the two guys known for little more than "Mamma Mia", "Super Trouper", ... Personally I think the plot is a bit weak, but the display of so many emotions is brilliant.
@Asusgen I so agree! After all, the play is set in the 80's, in a very specific moment in time (near the end of the Cold War). I think the fact that the 80s-style music is part of the score really helps to situate the play in the right setting and time.
This is the production from the UK and found on CD! It's magnificent but doesn't include Someone Else's Story! Murray Head was always the best. I'm honoured to have seen it there in 1986.
This is great! I love the 80s sound of Freddie's song in the middle.
Has anyone got a recording of Commie Newspapers? Beautiful song, my favourite from Chess, but it never seems to get onto the soundtracks though. Maybe because too much of it is spoken?

When I was about 9 I knew all the words to these songs. Thank you for posting this so I can reintroduce myself to the wonders of Chess! :D

I love how just after 1:40 other musicals are referenced...in a musical. Of course you feel like you're in a musical. Because. Its. A. Musical.
Personally I like The Arbiter better, but this is up there for sure.

My school is putting on this show, and the choir (which I am in) gets to sing this song, among a few other ones. I'm so excited!

Yeah. I prefer Adam Pascal for this part. Murray Head sounds a bit. . .really really bad. His "Pity the Child" is pretty good, though :)

The first classical part is beautiful, but the idiot in the last more poppy part obviously can't sing.

Oh you do make life fun. The idiot you reference is Murray Head. Famous singer for generations. HAHAHAHAHAHA.
