Soooo ... this means you guys are too young and misinformed to know there has NOT been a bigger day on record since Gloria in 86'? That's CLOSE, don't get me wrong. But it's a fact there has not been a swell with larger RIDE-ABLE wave faces than that infamous day during hurricane Gloria. ..... a photo of Scotti Duerr on a gian BOMB that looks like friggin Sunset Beach during that day was printed in a surf mag close to 30 years ago!!!!!
@dascruicloseout your right this sucks. I surfed Gloria and Hugo. IMO hugo had better shape where i was surfing. NJ has lots of coast line so i am sure it was good some spots and not so good at other spots.
I have pics of bombs that big or bigger form the pit in West End from like 15-20 years ago shot by Carl Rucki. This isn't the first pics of waves this size, but comparable.
people keep sayin it gets bigger in NJ but they don't know what they're talkin about... this is rarely seen ... and its not from a hurricane its from a nor'easter...last time i checked hurricanes come in the summer and nobody wears a full suit then...get your facts straight
I am pretty sure Ii remember that day...Either December 12th or 15th, 2003 if I remember correctly. Jersey def does not get much bigger than that! Nice pics!
@whatexitvideo No. I'm in Taranaki, New Zealand. It's winter down here and colder than a witches tit. If a suit would work well in Jersey winter, that's a good recommendation. What do you guys use?
I am from Long Island so i surf under the same situation. We can't support a wave bigger than about double overhead because the water approaching the shore is too shallow to hold a solid ground swell. But some 15+ windswell could show up on the shore but would be impossible to surf it, would be all windslop and washed out. Simply the energy needed to create a big wave at the beach would be dissipated by shallow water long before it reached long island or new jersey.
defenetly a hurrincane. nj is never that big unless theres a hurricane. belmar is closer to manasquan. it goes manasquan, sea girt, hieghts, spring lake, lake como, belmar
@baldwinn94 This is old but, its Manasquan, Sea Girt, Spring Lake and then Belmar. Spring Lake Heights and Lake Como do not have beaches. Belmar has all the beach property from Ocean ave to B st all the way to the Spring Lake border and Spring Lake stretches all the way to Sea Girt, not letting SLH touch any ocean front realty either.
i hate when surfing gets so fuckin competitive...i just do it to relax and have fun, but now theres all these pricks that turn it into a fight for whos better and whos surfed bigger waves, just shut up and surf
@1cod5glitcher yeah you're right it sucks

Theres actually 2 or 3 spots that can hold 15 plus, and a lot more people than you realise know about it.
Too bad Long Island rarely sees 15 plus waves.
