Nothing like Weckl. Weckl is so thoroughly precise in everything he plays and, in my humble opinion, way, way , way more creative. Nice hawk though. Btw, what's up with the Madonna cones on his cymbals ?
@groovemerchant19 I feel that Mike here still does some nice creative work with a fairly complex song arrangement - BUT, I would agree with you regarding (what we both feel is) Weckl's higher creativity level...(I feel that) Weckl has more subtlety and sensitivity in his playing (but this could be understandable given that he comes from more of a jazz/jazz fusion background)...I also enjoy just watching Weckl's seemingly effortless playing...
@walkover1 perdonqe me meta, pero para vos quien es el mejor del mundo, o los mejores del mundo??, o me vas a decir qe portnoy no entra en los mejores bateristas del mundo?...vamooooo....
@FliaParedes2285 MIRA....PARA MI ..SEGUN MIS PARAMETROS....Y LO KE HE VISTO HE ESCUCHADO Y LO KE SE DEL INSTRUMENTO ....PORTNOY NO ENTRA EN ESA CATEGORIA......KISAS COMO PRODUCTOR Y CEREBRO DE UNA BANDA TAN EXITOSA Y BUENA COMO LO ES D.T.
ok do you even know what band he plays in lol ? Rage against the machine has some of the most tastfull drumming i have ever heard mike has a unbelivable sence of rthym . Seriusly listen to it he does anything but overplay
Rage Against the Machine? Terrana never played with them, he played with the German heavy metal band RAGE (Formerly Avenger)
Though I do agree that he has a good sense of rhythm. His personal look at drumming (That it is a sport) is rather interesting and makes for a cool dedication to the act.
I am no ignorant! Donati is THE reference when it comes to footwork. But other than him, name drummers who have a level of control and speed on par with Terrana (except Lang, Collins (not Phil...Grant), Minnemann, Drummond and Roddy). My point is this guy deserve way more praise than he has: his playing is energetic, tasteful, original and he has this sense of showmanship absent from many drummer!
u really want 10 better? Mike Portnoy Neil Peart Ian Paice Dave Weckle Vinnie Colaiuta Terry Bozio Jin Chapin Dennis Chamber Steve Smith Carter Bullford wanna more?
funny though that you can't even spell Jim Chapin , Dave Weckl and Carter Beauford. True Terry Bozzio is out of this world but most of the drummers (if not all) that you named don't have the footwork Terrana has.
I dig Mike Terrana. He used to play his hi-hat extra high, about as high as that splash cymbal, above his left floor tom. It looked very strange, he said that he always played it that way, so he could hit the snare harder, he must have realized it wasn't necessary.
See what a few lessons can do for you : ) (jus kiddin).
I have never heard of this guy before. But this guy fuckin rocks the way I would like to see a drummer play.I wonder if the way his kick drums are angled helps in playing fast double bass patterns.
what about the broken stick right at the start of the song? plus there is compression somewhere (or hard limmiting) making every hit exactly the same intensity no matter how hard or soft you hit, only the tonality will change (though adding compression is not bad but you clearly see him wacking with all his str on the drumms, its a styll of playing but it damages drumss in the long run for the different sound.)
With all due respect, "So?" You've never broken a stick? I've broken sticks on floor toms. And what does compression have to do in anyway with finesse or style? It's obvious we are not getting "live" acoustics here, but studio micced drums, so your points about tonality are void.
ok for example, if no matter what you did with your voice, it would allways be at 100Db, even if you shouted or spoke quietly it would be 100Db, thus you don't hear louder hits and weaker hits making finess perfect but i forgot when i though that drumm mic are made to condense sounds and compress a bit so you can catch lower/higher frequences otherwizely hard to catch on a SM58 for the whole kit :P but that does not mean he does not have finness, just that its hard here to tell :P
Oh, now I see. I agree with you. Basing anyone's abilities based on one performance is not a good idea.
Even when I played regularly, I could still have a bad session and look like complete crap. Then again, I could pick up sticks after three months off and play like I had never stopped. And you're right, sometimes equipment makes all the difference.

Terrana is great...for the style...
If your into more authentic style and super tricky rythms (other this terrana's bass drum work) Jojo Mayer is your guy....
Propts to Terrana though...he has some insane legs...

why don't have the cymbals where he can reach them?
jonasbirgersson 4 years ago
because having the cymbals too low would result in the drum mics picking up the cymbal sounds. this is called "cymbal bleed"
