  • This is a myth.

  • the medical institute was a tax con whereby America's richest man paid no tax for the last 20 years of his life. He did however have no problem giving hundreds of thousands of dollars cash, probably millions, to people like Nixon but left not one cent to charity at his death. A self obsessed madman who should be pitied rather than admired. Give me Bill Gates over Hughes any day.

  • I wish I could have searches his house when he died, and took his valium and syringe full of opiates, that way he would be good for something rather then just sucking golfballs through a garden hose.

  • Too bad he did not have any children...

  • @JesusChristRulesYOU

But look at what he left behind and all the good things he has done. He may have been eccentric but he did so much for the aviation world. Btw I am both a pilot and a Catholic.

  • Howard, how do you achieve so much in such a short lifetime ? Thank Howard for the push-up bras, said every women from generation to generation all around the globe,Thanks Howard Hugh for the push-up bras they said....not too many thank GOD for it.

  • Sorry but Howard Hughes was a evil man and he was possessed by satan in his brain that is why he acted crazy and they should have put him in a electric chair, we must not allow evil people like him to steal that much monies.

  • @JesusChristRulesYOU what are you retarded

  • @JesusChristRulesYOU

you seem not to be a christian - i think, jesus doesn't like your "fanatism", troll.

it always makes me sad when i have to read comments like yours which give a bad image of christianity. btw, i'm catholic.

@topic: many people here in germany don't know much about howard hughes, which is sad, too :/

    well, my english sucks :/

  • @JesusChristRulesYOU He with out sin cast the first stone.

  • i have to do a project for ela so if u can help heres my e mail edwardsz86@yahoo.com

  • what a jerk

  • The Government can not tell the Howard Huges Medical Institute how to do it's research because it's not the Government's money. I believe it's the only institute in America that's free from Goverment control.

  • he will have another great life upon his next return

  • @rocketmountains Uhhhh, yeah sure.

  • howard, el gran howard.... todo un heroe.....

  • 5:15am Sunday (CDT) - Time in Mississippi, United States of America

  • if he were the first to "discover" Marilyn Monroe maybe her life could be much happier and even longer perhaps

  • died from a flight from Mexico to Houston in 1977, Swine Flu?

  • @willdav713 Howard died because he was in Mexico and his medications dried up, and he died in the air of liver failure.

  • @willdav713 sorry kidney failure

  • @willdav713 i think he wanted to die in the air. it was his home, passion.

  • @angelinasiel i thought the same thing.. i dont think its a coincidence that he died in the air

  • Excluding evil banksters I think he was richest man ever

  • @marty4379 - He was very rich. He was also the craziest most powerful man in the United States for years. He held a powerful hand over the CIA and FBI through his associate Robert Maheu and even the Mafia because Maheu knew Johnny Roselli as did Hughes. Hey he knew them all because he was out in Vegas.

  • @hogger129 Hughes never used Maheu's connection with the CIA and FBI he did at one point own all of the Vegas strip, and at that point he secretly had Nevada Governor Laxalt on his payroll. He wanted to make Las Vegas look like "a beautiful woman dressed in expensive clothes and getting out of a Rolls Royce" He ruled his empire all from the Penthouse on the top floor of the Desert Inn which was the first of many acquisitions of his in Nevada.

  • does anyone know a song - 0:14??

  • It was probably made up by the producers of this segment (NBC I think).. It does kind sound like a Vangelis song though (the title of that song I can't remember)..

  • mr howard always be hugh....!!!

  • No, he wasn't a Welsh-American, he was an AMERICAN, JUST LIKE I AM.

  • and he was a noncomformist, just like i am:)

  • Swell, however, that doesn't cover the ethnicity issue. He was born here, and was, and always will be AMERICAN. And, Yes, you are absolutely correct, he was certainly a non-conformist, just like you. Thanks, Angel, for the additional supporting comments, I really was happy to get your reply in my emails.

  • Howard Hughes was controlled by a hand full of the best of the Mormon Hierarchies Business men

  • @IExposeMormonism Exactly they opposite. He controlled them. They were the only people he trusted. The only people allowed in his room were Mormons. Not even his alter ego, Robert Maheu was allowed to see him. They only did business over the phone.

  • @monkoman100 I don't know much about the Hughes connection but it's unlikely Hughes controlled those from Mormonia. They are there for Money and power.

  • This man was a true innovator...

  • most interesting american imo

  • I'm a great fan of Hughes aswell but I agree if Tesla were alive today imagine the the problems he could solve and what he could do with todays technology.

  • Hughes and Telsa are my two most influential mentors that I continuously study. Its amazing how just these two people have single handedly changed the world

  • LOL...of course he was attractive to women, he had what all women want...MONEY & POWER. Do you honestly think he would have gotten all these babes if he was a janitor?

  • yah like charisma, charm, personality has nothing to do with it

  • to bangolobangolo: I honestly don't think Hughes was really charasmatic at all. I think it had more to do with the fact that he was rich and somewhat of a mystery man.....even when he was able to go out in public. I stand by my statement that his attraction to females was "money based". I guarantee you if he had been a handsome janitor or dog groomer with charisma, personality & charm....he would not have Hollywood starlets seeking him out & throwing themselves at him.

  • @inkey2 Money was certainly part of it, but Hughes was also extremely witty. He knew what to say and when to say it. That was part of his genius. It helped him not only with woman but also with his business dealings.

  • Sorry to say he was NOT eccentric,

And it was called the Hercules

  • Keeping it rich. Keep Houston Rich.

  • I have always held that Howard Hughes was one of the most handsome men who ever lived. I mean that in a platonic way, of course.

  • I killed Howard Hughes in a drunken rage.

  • He is such a brilliant man. He dated the most beautiful women in the world. It is a true shame he did not leave behind any offspring.

  • Ha Ha....who did he marry? Ella Rice. Which comes from the name Rees or Rhys. Birds of the feather.......

  • Exactly! Actually I read Cacadore's comment before yours.. His mother is also a distant descendant of Owen Tudor, so there's a bit of Welsh in her too.

  • Im Howard Hughes II

  • NO!-- I AM!!

  • Michelangelo, too.

Hughes was one of the most brilliant men of the 20th century.

  • It just sucks that one of the most brilliant men of the 20th century is known to many more for his mental problems rather than his brilliance.

  • @WonderDerek mental how?

  • @WonderDerek Anyone that really knows much at all about Mr. Hughes should know he was brilliant and that at that time OCD was undiagnosed. People that talk about him like he was some freak are ignorant of history and have no class.

  • @WonderDerek True, Two other great southerners the few people know are JACK KILBY & WALDO SEMON .

  • @WonderDerek I think the fact that he suffered from mental issues made him even greater. He faced many demons but none of them could bring him down!

  • Nikola Tesla was even more brillianter than Hughes! Haha.. No really, read about his fascinating life and inventions! He was certainly THE MOST important of the 20th century (in my humble opinion).. Not bad for a Serb.

  • So true...I am a HUGHE Howard Hughes fan but a larger Tesla Fan. The man single handledly changed the world, but yet few people even know of him.

  • whose telsa?

  • you were in the other timeline then before the timelines merged...OCD is what happens when you are forced by weirdo conventions to shake hands with people you don't really know the energies of...

  • ye whatvever clover boy!!

    they're all Welsh surnames,end of ...

    xx

  • lol! the clovers have nothing to do with this - it's a photo of some of the 4 & 5 leaved clovers i've found throughout the years. i stopped picking them, cause it's wrong.

also, not a boy! - female. the username is from Ghost In The Shell anime.

  • you got me actually looking this up....his grandparents are us-born from what i can gather, can't find exact details far back enough as to fathers surname. i conisdered it Irish as it fits many of the people i knows family origins of that name (eg most folk in same schools as me are of Irish origin) - looking it up its listed as Scottish, Irish, and Welsh.

well, at least i got an opportunity to link that Little Britain sketch somewhere, been wanting to do that for ages.

  • hughes is a welsh surname-theres a few from ireland and scotland due to the welsh moving there and keeping the name.howard hughes was of welsh descent on his fathers side if i remember correctly

  • lol, a few, have you actually been here and looked at the phone books....

  • to be honest i have slightly better things to do thatn reading phone books to look for surnames

'lol' to you to lol person

  • just so you know then, there's a lot of Hughes' all over the UK. if you go far back enough, the 'celtic' of the current brits often includes all the non-English countries - altho' obviousy, say here in Scotland, there's more than one origin of who are now called Scots; the Picts are different for example. some people kinda file them all under Gaelic - the current Welsh, Irish, Scottish (Gaelic) languages have similar origins too. but of course, are very different, so is Cornish, etc etc

  • & just for completeness and hints at Dunwiche - it's not co-incidental either that Brittany sounds like Britain, but it's in France - the south-west of England all the way to Brittany has the standing stones still dotted around, and they occur far north, and in Ireland too...

  • hey thanks for the history bite size lesson.i think maybe that i knew all this allready but thanks all the same.the original britons/celts ,including the celts living in scotland were what are now called the welsh-the scots are the name given to the irish invaders who invaded scotland.but we're all from the celtic tribes yes and share the same origins .

  • well, i just lived here all my life i don't actually have any celtic or british heritage at all. i know you meant you by 'we're', i'm just saying is all.

  • His greatest invention is " bras " for women hahahaa

  • Interestingly Tommy Lee Jones, another Welsh-American from Texas, played Howard Hughes in the 1977 TV production of "The Amazing Howard Hughes". He was also around the same age as DiCaprio when he played him.

I have Jones' version on DVD. I haven't watched it in a while, but I remember it spanned more time in Hughes' life up until his seclusion and death. It had more trial footage, and included some of the Clifford Irving scandal too. It's worth a watch to compare the two!

  • He's not Welsh-American: he's never been to Wales.

  • Yes actually his grandfather and all prior relatives on his father's side were from Wales.. What part of Wales, I've never been able to determine. His first wife, Ella Rice, was a Welsh-American too.

  • What a smart arsed comment, is that like African Americans have never been to Africa.

  • How can I get a copy of that film? I am very interested to watch it. Please let me know, thanks

  • i watched the aviator 2 days ago and i thought it was fantastic !!! leonardo diCaprio is such a wonderful actor and he really potrayed Hughes so well... and if i haven't mentioned this already i think howard hughes was amazing !

  • DiCaprio was SURPRISINGLY Excellent as the middle-aged Hughes (which I wasn't expecting)! If you watch the original Senate War Investigation trial, and the recreation by Scorsese/DiCaprio, you'll find its a very accurate piece of work. Not only did DiCaprio look like him, but sounded like Hughes as well-- AMAZING!

  • Yes te Aviator is a great movie.. I want to see or make the movie version of the aging Howard Hughes in vegas where hes eating banana ice cream and watching old movies wearing kleenax box for shoes and storing urine in jars, who knows what else, staring into the darkness of oblivion..

  • Oh.. I see-- Haha.. Yes, it looks like they didn't edit off the next segment in time. But the older lady with the white poodle was actually Terry Moore-- Howard Hughes ex-lady love. She was part of the story too (they interviewed her)

  • awesome...but what's that thing at the end?
