I really like this video. I live in the New Jersey shore area and go to NYC as often as I can and I think "oh I wish I lived here its so cool", but I think that in reality It wouldnt be as magical if I lived there and got used to it. I may live their one day and I will most likely work there at some point since I am an artist, but it is nice to here this video.
@nickasarbata haven't you ever watched Futurama? The subway system is a free housing system; it helps take care of poverty, especially during the winter months. (okay that was bad joke)
I just now remember one of the best T.V shows ever (Futurama) was based in New New York. I can't wait till I can move to this place.
I am from D.C...and I am in New York a few times a year...and have been doing this for years...People always say New Yorkers are RUDE.....I have never had a bad experience with people from New York....I find they may be ABRUPT...but RUDE...I can't say that...I love New York...and if I had the money...I would be living there.....IIIIIII LOVE NEW YOOOOOOORK. :0) And this was a great video.
Thank you for your vid! It's great to hear another perspective about NY. After 5years of scrimping/saving, I should be winging my way to NY from Wellington NZ, which was christened "coolest little capital in the world 2011" lol Rock on 2012!!
When someone says that they live in the greatest city or nation in the world, it's not that they're speaking condescendingly about others. They feel really proud about where they live and it's nothing to be a ashamed of. Call it arrogant, narrow minded, or whatever you want, but I'm from Brooklyn, and I live in the greatest city in the world.
If you want to make New York nicer, you have to get rid of the Blacks and Hispanics. The Asians, Indians and Whites seem to be doing a pretty good job at not making things suck.
I have many questions about NY. I want to come to Brooklyn but i have been warned by many people that I should only come unless i already know somebody who lives there.
This is a very informative video and its nice to hear a point of view of New York City from someone who lives there and knows it. My husband loves this city, but I find it a bit too busy and crowded for my taste. There are lots of things, however, to celebrate about NYC; fantastic shopping, beautiful architecture, wonderful restaurants and an exciting kind of vibe I haven't really experienced anywhere else. Thanks again for your very honest assessment.
My husband and I have visited NYC several times. We love the city...good or bad... I think Nick is giving an honest assesment. I also think this could apply to any metropolitan city. We live on the west coast... Long Beach, CA. I love my city and have lived here all my life (My husband is 3rd generation). I try and see the positive but I also know there is room for improvement just like anywhere else.
@ThaGodWeCreate YOU GOT IT BACKWARDS!. SORRY!!!!!. NEW YORK CITY, WHICH IS MY MY HOMETOWN, HAS WALL STREET, NASDAQ, AND NEW YORK CITY STOCK EXCHANGE (NYCSE)!. OKAY!?. WITHOUT IT, THIS NATION IS, INDEED, IN BIG ASS TROBLES!. OKAY!?. SO!. SHUT THE FLIPPING HELL UP!!!!. SERIOUSLY!!!!!.
@TLJAWSIMIB your saying WALL STREET is good for our country??? pay attention to what happens to america in tha next few years and see if you still agree with that comment. Jersey shits on new york...fuck nyc
@TLJAWSIMIB hey how you likin those gas prices right about now...thanks to your beloved WALL ST. i told you to keep watching for tha next couple years...
The living standart in NY is so low compared to other cities like Miami, Palm Beach, Houston or San Francisco. The Hygiene of the city is a disaster, its expensive, the weather sucks, to much taxes and people are rude.
i hear some references to Spain and their general good state of infrastructure. Well there's a simple reason. Spain have accumulated and spent a great deal (10x the average) of EU contribution funds. So it's sort of expected.
I love New York City. It really is just all opinion. Even if some parts are negative in the city, it doesnt bother me. New York City is just not for some people..
A very balanced and fair perspective. Indeed, I love NYC, but that being said I can't say it is the best city on earth, that is a highly subjective statement.
If you don't like New York, go home. Quite simple really. And if you don't like tourists, well, get used to it, or get over it. See you next year kids! Ill be the 1 in white pants and cloth hat.
I am from Pakistan and thus my opinion has no value but I have been to New York and going to rev isit NEXT MONTH, however with all due respect Mr Nickasarbata, you are not Manhattan material.
omg ur awsome! all you said was true.. and yea ill like to live in new york someday, but there are things of ny that im not sure if i could live in there.
OMG, people are saaaaad in here! How dare you judge him on his "gay" appereance? This video is clearly made to give people some information about NYC and how an actual New Yorker (which he is) thinks about the city and maybe helping others, who want to come there. I am really sick of you bastards always judging people's looks in videos when the video isn't about the look. If he would have wanted you to judge his appereance then the video was caled: How do you think I look?
@consciousmixture the idea of him being GAY in this video is so highly irrelevant anyways.... I wanna know why I can't come to brooklyn without a friggin armed tour of bodyguards. I just wanna come to NYC and see a few things but am constantly wondering why they cant control their people out there.
if you want to pay 50 percent in taxes like they do in spain and england, then we can have clean streets too.
and as far as the best city in the world, in your country if you asked people how good your country is do they say "well it's okay, we are ranked 457th best country"? No, everyone thinks they are from the best country, the best city, the best neighborhood, the best religion, the best race. People are sheep and need to belong, so they say these things
Fort Tryon park is amazing... in my opinion it is better than central park... you stand looking over at New Jersey and you could be in the country-side... it is one of the few places you can go in the city where you are away from the buildings and you actually feel outside of the melting pot that is midtown and downtown you are lucky to live in such a wonderful area of New York City...
That ws not the plot of the movie. In the movie New York was turned to a maximum security prison during WW2. So yeah. And why would Oprah Winfrey say that Chicago sucks when thats where she's lived for most of her life.
ha ha. u wish oprah said that. oprah is Chicago. dont hate cause NY aint got oprah she dont like ny anyway cause of the filth, rats, roaches & flies everywhere.
Look I don't want Oprah I don't care we hve tons of favous TV host Tyra Banks, David Letterman, Jay Leno etc. Roaches and Flies are everywhere depends how you live
when i was in NY i saw rats, flies everywhere from the trash sitting on the sidewalks & big ass roaches in buildings. oprah can knock leno, letterman & tyra all outta the box. she's the most powerful women in the world as far as influence & global appeal & she reps the CHI all day.
People say NYC is dirty but its a very large city with lots of people pollution has gone down alot in the last 10 yrs. Yeah youre right about the education/wealth gap there are alot of rich smart people but alot dump poor people but it depends where you live. I recommend NYC you'll have lots of fun here
im back joe. the latin kings may have originated from Chi-town but they have a big branch of the gang in NYC too. for Chicago to be smaller than NY we still got yall beat in all catagories. Chicago may be known for the mob & street gangs but we have less murders than NY. we are the world's greatest city get over it. you probably livin in the projects like most new yorkers tryin to make ends meet or shacking up with yo mama. lol!
see even u are smart enough to leave NY. but u are an example tho cause NY is so expensive that most new yorkers do share an apartment with somebody even their mamas. like i said Chicago's crime rate is blown out of proportion. if u want good city living come to the CHI.
I didn't leave New York because I think that its expensive or tht I hate it I left for college to be somewhere different, meet new people I will go back. How is it blown out of proportion numbers don't lie
yada yada yada yada. most new yorkers dont even leave their blocks let alone the city. NY is like a big claustrophobic depression. the didnt name that movie Escape From New York for nothin.
yeah the plot was to get the hell out of NY ha ha. there is no better spokesperson for Chicago than Chicago's own Oprah Winfrey who declare Chicago is not only the best city in america but the most fabulous city in the world during her season opener that closed off a section of our world's famous Michigan Avenue for her taping. she got it like that joe.
I've been interested in NYC all my life but have never been there, (I'm from philly) partly because I'm afraid of looking like a dumb tourist which many new yorkers are VERY quick to point out about people who are slightly confused by the city.
Hi!Thank you for your response.I'm a New Yorker, having born and lived here.I agree with you,and I thought your description of your observation from your stay here was honest, which I like.I agree with almost everything you said, but the part about the subway ehhh...I hate subway only for the reason that I'm tired of it(crowded, hot and filthy,no doubt),but is one of the most efficient and well coordinated subway system in the world.I can attest to that.Character count running out,so bye and I hope
I always like new york, and I would like to live there someday. I'm spanish and of course, I don't know so much as you know about your city but sometimes scares me a lot living there alone. I'm gonna stop watching CSI:NY. It doesn't help in the fear thing! Is new york so bad as we see in CSI?
dont come to NY unless u wanna get spit on. new yorkers are rude as hell they dont even respect themselves let alone outsiders. thats why new yorkers dont like us Chicagoans cause we have a better reputation. we have that NY edge but with midwestern hospitality & charm. look no further than our president Obama who spent most of his life here in Chicago.
Uh no Obama spent his life as a kid in Hawaii and Jakarta, Indonesia and lived in NYC as a young adult. THen he moved to Chicago to work in the gov. over their so yEAH
calm down fam everybody already know NY SUCKS. president Obama may not be Chicago born & raised but he was bred in the Chicago way of life & politics & got a Chicago wife. dont hate joe. the only thing NY got goin on is times square & broadway everything else is garbage joe.
what lower crime rate NY got? yall still mugging people for their ipods on trains & all that gangbanging with the crips & bloods & latin kings. please! try another one.
Very Nice...Well put. I tend to agree with you too...And though I may be living in New York for little while...and though I tend to actually dread the idea, I am still going:) It is a great place after all.
well whoever tht man waz who talk alot shit about new york iz WRONG! he doesnt live in new york to even judge such a great city we are expensive yes but we do clean the subway stationz as much as possible but it can be hard if itz 24/7 and u hav out-of-towners who dont respect new york and leave trash everywhere i live in new york and i never litter and none of my friendz do either so u cant sterotype NEW YORKERZ
Very interesting, I'm going to New York in 2 weeks. I'm from Paris, and I am now staying in Madrid, and, it is true that the metro in Madrid is really good, it is efficient and clean and fast, but it does not run 24hours at all.
Yes the subways in New York are smelly and dirty, but they're incredibly efficient and fast in comparison to where I live (Sydney, Australia). The trains here are absolutely atrocious, you can't depend on them to save your life. Constantly late, constantly stalling on the tracks (not to mention the fact that there's suburban sprawl as far as the eye can see, so it sometimes takes about 50 minutes to get to the other side of "the city") it's bullshit.
I went to Tokyo, Taipei, Hongkong and many other big cities, and they are all the same... some of the stuff were build in many many years ago, so u cant really blame them for being ugly and old. even if the government cleaned it, there will always be someone that wants to destroy something.
Imagine if they saw NYC in the 1970s/1980s. Talk about filthy. Subway cars covered head to toe in grafitti. I, as a NYer miss that. I think all of these things listed gave NY its character, which is slowly being eroded by the Disney-ization of this city.
OK question: I've never even been to New York City or the areas surrounding it, therefore, if I came I'd be one of the "hated" tourists that you mention. LOL If tourists are so damn aggravating, do you or any viewers who are New Yorkers have any advice for us tourists to not be so irritating and in everyone's way?
thanks. i am thinking about moving to ny (but NOT manhattan) and enjoyed the opinions. i've been visiting and found it very huge, high speed and arrogant but fun and lively nevertheless and being an owl it fits me i think?! but in the peaceful quiet spots are where u meet the best people. i never thought about the aesthetics of the subway I was just shocked at it being 24hrs. but yeah it is ugly.
The economic equality in Sweden is entirely due to that fact that "our" rich are so poor. I saw a survey recently (Johan Norbergs blog) that showed that the poorest 10 % in Sweden and in the US were at a tie.
My dad pretty much would agree to everything you said, and although I myself hate tourists (always avoid midtown--that is where most of the tourists will head to) but then again, if it weren't for them, our city wouldn't be as rich. As for the subway systems...if we have so much money, can't they upgrade? Paris has a better subway system!
Second, what was dkatzism getting at when he spoke about the "bridge and tunnel concept?" Manhattan is an island! You have to use one of these two methods to get into the city, aside from the ferry.
Ha, This is actually my topic for my final thesis. New York is NOT the greatest city in the world, in fact, it's all personal opinions. However, New York is one of the most cosmopolitan city in the world, where cultural diversity is recognized, accepted, and assimilated into each other. Since there is really no "American" culture, ethnoscapes from all over the world make up "New York".
I was born and raised in Philadelphia Pa, and have been to Providence RI, Harford CT, NYC, Pittsburgh PA, Baltimore MD, Washington DC, Richmond VA, Columbus OH, Indianpolis IN, St. Louis and Kansas City MO, San Antonio TX, Des Moines and Davenport IA, Omaha and Lincoln NB, Pueblo CO, Flagstaff and Phoenix AZ, Saltlake City UT, Reno NV, Cheyenne WY, Los Angeles and Sacramento CA. Buy my favorite city in the U.S. is San Francisco.
I'm glad to hear you don't share the feeling of many NYers to NJ, I happen to live on NJ and love it. I have a friend who used to live in Manhattan and thought that was the only place to live, he now lives in Brooklyn and loves it. Take the F train to Brooklyn and check out the Heights and Cobble Hill, you might find a new area of NY that you like.
I live in western Massachusetts and folks who move here from New York have a well earned reputation for their rudeness, even those that choose to settle here permanently. XOXO
That was really interesting to hear you draw on your knowledge of other cities, countries and cultures when replying to the criticisms levelled at New York. Your evidence that travel does broaden the mind!
To your comment about the subways: America is really suffering on the infrastructure issue. Our bridges, roads, subway systems etc. are old, falling apart, and dirty much in part due to the fact that we are busy running around the world spending trillions starting pointless wars and trying to police others all in the name of protecting OUR freedoms. Go figure...
I think everyone should believe they live in the greatest country in the world. I don't see anything wrong with national pride. I'm a native New Yorker, but I am not rude. I also know NYC is not the greatest city in the world...Paris is! :)
NYC is one of my favorite cities but one of the reasons I love it is that it isn't like any other city, in both good ways & bad. I also love SF, London, Edinburgh, Boston, & Chicago. Each has things I love & hate about them but if you tried to get me to pick which one's best, I wouldn't because they're all great in different ways.
I was in London over the weekend and I always think people are rude there (though always in a hurry) but ive been told by foreign people visiting that actually, American city people tend to be alot ruder ... I can't get my head around that.
I'm not really a fan of cities anyway, I can't stand London (too crowded) but I agree on the New York subway, it makes other subways look like palaces!
Plus, London is waaayyy up there in the list of most expensive places on earth which is a shame
I agree with you that the differences are more urban versus rural/suburban. Living in such a crowded, expensive, stressful environment makes people ruder. It's like rats in a cage nipping and biting at each other the more they are crowded in.
dafttool, everyone's entitled to their preferences re: urban/rural. city dwellers like me might be 'rats in a cage nipping and biting each other.' city living might even make me ruder. on the other hand, hicks living in the woods see little of the world. arguably living in homogeneous tedium makes ppl narrow minded & less imaginative.
I live in a small town and I have been all over the world and living in the "woods" gives you more of an imagination and perspective. But there is no basis in saying that because a person lives in a diverse area it makes a person more open minded. Usually it gives them a feeling of superiority and gives them the idea that they don't have to go outside their social medium and truly understand the world they live in. That is "homogenous tedium" you idiot.
The rudeness factor of New Yorkers is legendary, whether they like it or not. And what's worse is that even when they leave NYC, they often take that rudeness with them. Living in the South, you can spot these transplants pretty much instantly. And prideful arrogance is always annoying. My feeling is if you have to brag to pump yourself up, then you have issues. And if NYC is so freaking great, then why did you ever move away?
After trashing it, I thought I might say something nice. Culture was mentioned, but its museums definitely deserve a shout out (though DC has more per capita). And of course it has Broadway. There's no place else in America that remotely approaches that.
whats wrong with being proud of your city? its not like southerners are all humble and quiet. its endless southern pride w/y'all. and its just as easy to spot a southern transplant in the north. look for the confederate flag or signs of anxiety when confronted by a strong gay, black or latino individual, or basically anyone not of anglo descent who's not a bible thumper.
nimoss: Actually the Southern Pride crowd is a very, very small minority of Southerners, but your point is well taken. Every community has its bad ambassadors. I personally find bragging distasteful, even if it is well warranted. Better that an outsider should brag on your behalf, than to sound like you're on the payroll of a public relations board. That's just the way I was brought up. I know others have the attitude that if you don't talk yourself up, then nobody else will. Whatever.
Well, you can argue "greatest" 'till the cows come home..I think you bring up a sensible point of identifying the good points and bad points of each city, or country, and let an informed populace make up their own minds as to which suits their own individuality best. :) Good work!
I agree with some of the things on the list, and I liked your insight, especiall about the train system. I agree that the European systems are much nicer. In terms of the garbage and stuff... you know people in the US just dont like doing jobs like collecting garbage, it is interesting, but there is an inherent feeling that we are better than that or something.
Anyway, i loved this, it is interesting to see what people do and dont like about the city
Good arguments (and also very logical) on the "NY is the best city in the world" comment. How can you say that if you haven't been in every city of the world? =p
Hahaha, oh, I don't hate you! In fact, I loved these videos. Thank you for making them and for giving so much thought to what I had to say. If you had agreed with everything I said, I might have been a little creeped out, but you didn't, and differences of opinion make topics like these so much more interesting.
I'll answer you back, I hope - Just not in comment form.
Yeah, well, you know me... I would have even loved ten straight minutes of total disagreement. It's the fact that I inspired someone to do a video response that is so cool to me.
I agree that their is a lot of arrogance in Americans saying they live in the greatest country in the world, it may be pride but it's still arrogant and it's a big reason a lot of people hate us.
I'd be glad to visit NY but I'd never want to live there. I love LA, and if I ever moved it wouldn't be to another big city.
To be arrogant, you must both believe that your country is the best and that other countries are inferior by that standard.. Most Americans who say the US is the greatest nation in the world do not mean to actively put down other nations. Little foreign culture permeates the US, while US culture reaches the world. Thus, it's pretty much inevitable that many Americans will be seen as self-centered and ignorant. But, can you blame individuals for being unwillfully ignorant?
When Muhammed Ali said he was the greatest he wasn't "actively putting down" others, but his attitude was still, rightly, taken as arrogant and superior.
"Little foreign culture permeates the US"?? Where do you live? Here my governor is Austrian, Cinco De Mayo is as loud a celebration as 4th of July, there are tons of foreign language channels on my TV, if I go to the right neighborhood I can go all day without hearing a word of English. I'd say thats permeation!
I'm speaking in relative terms. People in other countries generally know more about American culture/news than Americans know of others. Hollywood movies are an example of why this is. I'm not saying that the US is homogeneous, but I think the average European, say, knows more about the US than vice versa, simply because of media.
You have a point with the Ali quote, though I do think there's a difference between a person talking about himself and a person saying it to their own group. I also think that many other countries feel the same way about themselves, but US media and movies tend to amplify our self-praise.
So Americans should be forgiven their arrogance because they are ill-informed and self-involved? The broad audience to our culture ought to make us even more aware of how we present ourselves, not less.
Forgiveness implies justified blame. How do you blame someone for being ignorant? You can only blame for being negligent. I don't think most Americans, particularly in middle-America see the US in the context of the world because they don't truly know how much their culture is seen around the world. If you think this is worthy of blame, that's fine. I don't think it will do any good.
You should only be forgiven ignorance if you have a good excuse for being ignorant--youth, senility, no connection whatsoever to the information. But it isn't Farmer Bob in Kansas saying America is the greatest that raises other countries ire, it's the president, congressmen, actors, news anchors--those who are famous and/or have a platform to be heard. Those people don't have the right to be ignorant of such things.
Well, I completely agree with that, though I wouldn't call it ignorance. Those people are well aware, and they just don't care to act on it. They're negligent. Anyway, this has gone way off topic. I'll stop arguing now ;)
lol, it was a fun conversation, but I don't think our opinions differ that much really. That's when arguing is fun :D when you don't actually disagree, hehehe
I agree with THIS comment on the other side of the token as well!!! And to take responsibility for that, I am trying to learn more about other countries and more about where us Americans are ignorant. But still, I think I won't totally overcome it until I can actually go to those places.
I agree with this. I'm an ignorant (yes I'll admit it cuz it's true) lifelong American who wants to become much less ignorant about the world and see the great things in the world in other countries. So, comments like this do inform me and help in a way.
great comment. similar story in nyc. the city help line is available in 120+ languages, there are enormous parades for ethnic groups ranging from irish to chinese to dominican to afro-carribean, more than half the city council are ethnic minorities, there are the tons of foreign language channels on TV, restaurants of every origin imaginable, movie theaters showing only bollywood, newspapers in russian, korean, yiddish, etc.
NYC as well as many of the bigger cities are without a doubt international cities. But I've lived and visited in many cities in "middle-America" and this diversity is not the case. The whole of the US is not like NYC, for better or worse.
I was thinking about your statement on arrogant New Yorkers who say it's the best without proper experience. I don't agree with this because I don't think it is said out of arrogance. I sometimes tell people that Boston is the greatest city, and I will willfully admit that I can't say this objectively. You have to realize that such sayings are rooted in pride, not arrogance, which are truly different things. It's like saying "My mother is the best" even though you haven't had every mother.
Good lord. OK, first of all...Manhattan is an island. Unless you want to swim or take a ferry, your only choices for getting to it are a bridge or tunnel.
New York has the busiest subway system in the country. Unless you want to double the amount of revenue-generating rolling stock, you're not going to be able to keep up with keeping all cars clean. It just won't happen. I live and work in Washington, DC. We have the second-busiest subway system in the country. It is not open 24/7.
dont you think americans saying they live in the greatest country in the world and new yorkers saying it about their city are connected? new york represents the good side of america: tolerance, diversity, immigration, achievement. bush represents the worst: ignorance, lack of interest, war. the more he carries on about the land of the free, the more new yorkers insist their city is great. when they do that they are standing apart from a country they dont relate to.
I have an explanation for you as to why New Yorkers are rude. I think most people have a limit to which they will act a bit rude out of annoyance. The limit is a function one's patience, and patience is a function one's stress. I think it's fair to say that in a place like NYC, people are very stressed, be it from work, commuting, high cost of living, competition, etc. I don't think that they are just intrinsically rude, but rather that the city has an environment that fosters it.
heres another possibility. new yorkers live in public. everybody is visible and on a public stage ALL the time. compare it to a place like pheonix az where ppl are in their cars, office, house, or airconditioned shopping malls. you catch glimpses of ppl but dont see them interact. in nyc it's an endless parade. and so your far more apt to see jerks -- lol and when u do u dont forget it.

So, people, BACK OFF!

if you want to pay 50 percent in taxes like they do in spain and england, then we can have clean streets too.
and as far as the best city in the world, in your country if you asked people how good your country is do they say "well it's okay, we are ranked 457th best country"?

Very interesting, I'm going to New York in 2 weeks. I'm from Paris, and I am now staying in Madrid, and, it is true that the metro in Madrid is really good, it is efficient and clean and fast, but it does not run 24hours at all.
Nanonyms 3 years ago
Yes the subways in New York are smelly and dirty, but they're incredibly efficient and fast in comparison to where I live (Sydney, Australia). The trains here are absolutely atrocious, you can't depend on them to save your life. Constantly late, constantly stalling on the tracks (not to mention the fact that there's suburban sprawl as far as the eye can see, so it sometimes takes about 50 minutes to get to the other side of "the city") it's bullshit.

Imagine if they saw NYC in the 1970s/1980s. Talk about filthy. Subway cars covered head to toe in grafitti. I, as a NYer miss that. I think all of these things listed gave NY its character, which is slowly being eroded by the Disney-ization of this city.

The economic equality in Sweden is entirely due to that fact that "our" rich are so poor. I saw a survey recently (Johan Norbergs blog) that showed that the poorest 10 % in Sweden and in the US were at a tie.

London's is cleaner than NYC's, but it doesn't run 24 hours. EXACTLY! They shut it down and have time to clean the trains and stations!
Don't rag on NYC's subway system. It's the best.
Jsd8675 4 years ago
My dad pretty much would agree to everything you said, and although I myself hate tourists (always avoid midtown--that is where most of the tourists will head to) but then again, if it weren't for them, our city wouldn't be as rich. As for the subway systems...if we have so much money, can't they upgrade? Paris has a better subway system!

Very nice video series, Nick.

Plus, London is waaayyy up there in the list of most expensive places on earth which is a shame
waynooooo 4 years ago
I agree with you that the differences are more urban versus rural/suburban. Living in such a crowded, expensive, stressful environment makes people ruder. It's like rats in a cage nipping and biting at each other the more they are crowded in.
dafttool 4 years ago 2
dafttool, everyone's entitled to their preferences re: urban/rural. city dwellers like me might be 'rats in a cage nipping and biting each other.' city living might even make me ruder. on the other hand, hicks living in the woods see little of the world. arguably living in homogeneous tedium makes ppl narrow minded & less imaginative.
nimoss 4 years ago
I live in a small town and I have been all over the world and living in the "woods" gives you more of an imagination and perspective. But there is no basis in saying that because a person lives in a diverse area it makes a person more open minded. Usually it gives them a feeling of superiority and gives them the idea that they don't have to go outside their social medium and truly understand the world they live in. That is "homogenous tedium" you idiot.
LittleMo101 4 years ago
The rudeness factor of New Yorkers is legendary, whether they like it or not. And what's worse is that even when they leave NYC, they often take that rudeness with them. Living in the South, you can spot these transplants pretty much instantly. And prideful arrogance is always annoying. My feeling is if you have to brag to pump yourself up, then you have issues. And if NYC is so freaking great, then why did you ever move away?
dafttool 4 years ago
After trashing it, I thought I might say something nice. Culture was mentioned, but its museums definitely deserve a shout out (though DC has more per capita). And of course it has Broadway. There's no place else in America that remotely approaches that.
dafttool 4 years ago
after trashing it though, dafttool, i will say the south has decent iced tea.
nimoss 4 years ago
daftool,
whats wrong with being proud of your city? its not like southerners are all humble and quiet. its endless southern pride w/y'all. and its just as easy to spot a southern transplant in the north. look for the confederate flag or signs of anxiety when confronted by a strong gay, black or latino individual, or basically anyone not of anglo descent who's not a bible thumper.
nimoss 4 years ago
nimoss: Actually the Southern Pride crowd is a very, very small minority of Southerners, but your point is well taken. Whatever.
dafttool 4 years ago
i do live i think in the rudest place in the south .
bluewolverine40 4 years ago
Well, you can argue "greatest" 'till the cows come home..I think you bring up a sensible point of identifying the good points and bad points of each city, or country, and let an informed populace make up their own minds as to which suits their own individuality best. :) Good work!

I agree with some of the things on the list, and I liked your insight, especiall about the train system. I agree that the European systems are much nicer. Anyway, i loved this, it is interesting to see what people do and dont like about the city

I agree that their is a lot of arrogance in Americans saying they live in the greatest country in the world, it may be pride but it's still arrogant and it's a big reason a lot of people hate us.
I'd be glad to visit NY but I'd never want to live there. I love LA, and if I ever moved it wouldn't be to another big city.
kalaway 4 years ago
To be arrogant, you must both believe that your country is the best and that other countries are inferior by that standard.. Most Americans who say the US is the greatest nation in the world do not mean to actively put down other nations. Little foreign culture permeates the US, while US culture reaches the world. Thus, it's pretty much inevitable that many Americans will be seen as self-centered and ignorant. But, can you blame individuals for being unwillfully ignorant?
ibechane 4 years ago
When Muhammed Ali said he was the greatest he wasn't "actively putting down" others, but his attitude was still, rightly, taken as arrogant and superior.
"Little foreign culture permeates the US"?? Where do you live? Here my governor is Austrian, Cinco De Mayo is as loud a celebration as 4th of July, there are tons of foreign language channels on my TV, if I go to the right neighborhood I can go all day without hearing a word of English. I'd say thats permeation!
kalaway 4 years ago
I'm speaking in relative terms. People in other countries generally know more about American culture/news than Americans know of others. Hollywood movies are an example of why this is. I'm not saying that the US is homogeneous, but I think the average European, say, knows more about the US than vice versa, simply because of media.
ibechane 4 years ago
You have a point with the Ali quote, though I do think there's a difference between a person talking about himself and a person saying it to their own group. I also think that many other countries feel the same way about themselves, but US media and movies tend to amplify our self-praise.
ibechane 4 years ago
So Americans should be forgiven their arrogance because they are ill-informed and self-involved? The broad audience to our culture ought to make us even more aware of how we present ourselves, not less.
kalaway 4 years ago
Forgiveness implies justified blame. How do you blame someone for being ignorant? You can only blame for being negligent. I don't think most Americans, particularly in middle-America see the US in the context of the world because they don't truly know how much their culture is seen around the world. If you think this is worthy of blame, that's fine. I don't think it will do any good.
ibechane 4 years ago
You should only be forgiven ignorance if you have a good excuse for being ignorant--youth, senility, no connection whatsoever to the information. But it isn't Farmer Bob in Kansas saying America is the greatest that raises other countries ire, it's the president, congressmen, actors, news anchors--those who are famous and/or have a platform to be heard. Those people don't have the right to be ignorant of such things.
kalaway 4 years ago
Well, I completely agree with that, though I wouldn't call it ignorance. Those people are well aware, and they just don't care to act on it. They're negligent. Anyway, this has gone way off topic. I'll stop arguing now ;)
ibechane 4 years ago
lol, it was a fun conversation, but I don't think our opinions differ that much really. That's when arguing is fun :D when you don't actually disagree, hehehe
kalaway 4 years ago
I agree with THIS comment on the other side of the token as well!!! And to take responsibility for that, I am trying to learn more about other countries and more about where us Americans are ignorant. But still, I think I won't totally overcome it until I can actually go to those places.
tall32guy 3 years ago

It is not open 24/7.

sorry to tell you but the Madrid subway does not run 24h...I had to learn that ;)
But I agree with you that it's one of the nicest systems I ever used. However, the Paris metro has some of the nicest stations I've ever seen.

dont you think americans saying they live in the greatest country in the world and new yorkers saying it about their city are connected? new york represents the good side of america: tolerance, diversity, immigration, achievement. bush represents the worst: ignorance, lack of interest, war. the more he carries on about the land of the free, the more new yorkers insist their city is great. when they do that they are standing apart from a country they dont relate to.

Hi again
I have an explanation for you as to why New Yorkers are rude. I think most people have a limit to which they will act a bit rude out of annoyance. The limit is a function one's patience, and patience is a function one's stress. I think it's fair to say that in a place like NYC, people are very stressed, be it from work, commuting, high cost of living, competition, etc. I don't think that they are just intrinsically rude, but rather that the city has an environment that fosters it.

ibechane,
heres another possibility. new yorkers live in public. everybody is visible and on a public stage ALL the time. compare it to a place like pheonix az where ppl are in their cars, office, house, or airconditioned shopping malls. you catch glimpses of ppl but dont see them interact. in nyc it's an endless parade. and so your far more apt to see jerks -- lol and when u do u dont forget it.
