The TV episode uses two camera angles, and although there is some very slight movement and re-focus in the second shot, the camera is essentially not moving - while the Movie uses three camera angles, and moves around the set a lot more.
Considering these are 100% identical sets, the same actor and situation, it's amazing how much improvement just one more camera angle and some freedom of movement can make to the end result (probably took a lot more takes to get it right though).
A real nuclear reactor has a "big red button" that inserts the control rods all the way, bringing the reaction to a halt... you still have to cool the reactor for awhile until all the secondary reactions die out and the actual metal structure cools down.
Why does the most technologically advanced reactor in the Galaxy not have a big red button? Seem it would be a simple matter of turning off the fuel flow and letting the reaction "burn out."
@Lordoffail It's not an easy thing to just stop a matter/antimatter reaction. Remove the matter from the reaction chamber and the antimatter will cause a breach. Remove the antimatter from the chamber too fast and the same thing will happen. In the time it takes too safely drain the antimatter from the core, unless you have a working cooling system, the reaction will overheat the chamber and cause it too rupture.
@babylon218 This is also why starships usually dump the antimatter from the containment pods or eject the Warp Core in emergency situations like this.
@kevinphoenix2007 That is quite true....point taken. I wasnt sure what paticular episode that clip was from but you would be quite correct. Shame that they took off practically all the star trek episodes on youtube...guess just another way to squeeze more money out of us....they'll be missed by more than me I'm sure.
They ALWAYS take the episodes off. People hide them under creative names. HERE ARE A FEW: BY STAR DATE ( my favorite) TNG then a number of episode, straight title, star trek then the episode number, episode description, STTNG and many more just keep looking they are always here.
IRL it would make the most sense to build a starship with engineering and the bridge back to back in the centre of the ship, with multiple warp core ejection backups and multiple backups to command pathways, power lines to weapons arrays and other critical systems. A separate core dedicated solely to shield generation would make sense for a warship.
after he "fixed" the first one, you'd think he'd know how to handle it the next time around.......oh wait.....that'd NEVER happen again would it?......nah,I must be "mistaken"
@DraconusMajorus Don't forget that Yesterday's Enterprise took place in an alternate timeline. Once the original timeline was restored, Geordi would have no memory of that event to think to prevent it a second time.
Screw a new cooling system. Starfleet needs to invest time keeping it away from the part of the ship that gets hit by a torpedo EVERY FREAKING EPISODE
Yeah, but you get to see the classic Geordi LaForge roll-under-the-door of the engine room! He does it both times here, and he also does in Best of Both Worlds, I think :)
@BULLSHIT1173 One of those classic Starfleet manoeuvres! Think they teach it at Starfleet Engineering?.. "In case of coolant leak, eavacuate all crew and wait until last moment to roll under the door!..."
In any situation where things are critically damaged enough to cause a warp core breach, it never fails that the primary, secondary, and tertiary WC ejection systems/subroutines fail.
@sakar181 What if the primary and secondary were knocked out in the battle? Sounds like in the second scene he's worried because there is no backup left...
Hence the reason there are tertiary systems, or the backup's backup, on critical ships systems. Or, thats what's *supposed* to be there. But in such situations, it seems that either no tertiary systems are in place, or they fail.
After all, what would the show be like if everything worked all the time?
@2008FORDF450V8 He said there was nothing he could do. We all know that the core ejection systems aren't drama-proof, so if we saw him try, it still wouldn't have worked because of the story anyway. Oh well...
You know what's funny, 15 years ago when I saw generations, I thought I noticed it, but assumed it was deja vu or something. Nice to know I was right!

Thats what you get when Starfleet cut corrners and use a cooling system taken from a Fiat Cinquecento.

Bad manufacturing flaw in the coolant pump for that model year. Star fleet to cheap to replace with after market and keeps getting refurbs.
