I think modern historians forget that the ancient cultures were much more simplistic in there living structure and that science and technology were much different than today. Each city was ruled by a different god or goddess. That Hera reigned supreme in greece her religon is 1000s of years older than Zeus and Apollo. The ancients would worship animals and ever rocks and caves. The statues you see in this video and even Homers re told stories are quite new in religous terms.
