The Iranians didn't shut down their nuclear program. The NIE indicated that Iran stopped it's research into developing a working warhead (presumably for a nuclear weapon) in 2003. However, it did not say that they had stopped other research, nor that they had stopped pursuing the enrichment of uranium. The conclusion of the NIE was that, in 2003, Iran stopped developing a warhead and that there was no evidence that they had resumed.
That said, the research they stopped, while one of the most crucial in producing a nuclear bomb, is one that is fairly straightforward and easily resumed. If needed, the program they stopped could be started up again at any time.
So, Iran is still pursuing nuclear technology and is still actively pursuing the other aspects of producing a bomb, such as adapting their missiles to host a warhead and enriching uranium. It is important to note this.

I agree. Many Christian Republicans will hear to see if the candidate is pro-life and don't listen much beyond that point. And then there's pride: folks don't like to admit that things are going badly and stick to their guns no matter how bad things get (as a matter of "principle" perhaps). I truly was apathetic and claimed no political affiliation until I heard Ron Paul's opinions. I was leaning toward Democrats, too, because they seemed more open to some kind of change.
