I have this for my iPhone and it is one of the most amazing apps I've ever had. I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that the contents of a $25,000 synthesizer are now on my cellphone
Wow no mention of Herbie Hancock, who also bought one in 1980 around the time Stevie Wonder got his. That and the background music in the vid makes me think there were no pro/performing musicians involved in this app
Incredible, what was a machine that took up half a room 30 years ago can now be had on a laptop device for a fraction of the cost, technology has outstripped evolution!
Peter i must say i love this app very much, im very impress in the interest you have for the iPhone and iPad and iPod touch i run this application and absolutely love it, there are rumors about the synclavier as well on the iPhone iPod touch and iPad what do you about it? i played the fairlight cmi and love that instrument, your emulation takes me back in time when i was young, and i think that it will open the doors to a younger generation kids of today will expierience what we did years ago.
Kudos to you guys for doing this - great that this brand is still going, introducing itself to people who weren't around back in the day (I was 6 when the CMI came out, and it was Jarre that really introduced it to me).
I rather stick to my original CMI IIx... its truly a jewel in my studio! I cant imagine to replace this "child-coffin" with an app... i even dont have a ipad/phone/crap whatever

no core midi? no waveform drawing . rip off fifty bucks for this is just a burn. showing bob moog in the beginning of this is extremely misleading. pay attention to what he says. most efficient for manipulation of sound is the key stressed from this video. what a rip off fairlight you people should be ashamed of misleading people to donate fifty dollars to your company.just a joke really. i mean using bob moog to advertise this is just flat out misleading and false advertising. bullshit
@allthedayslivevideo Core midi is supported. For $10 you get a midi player with the complete, original CMI-2X library. For $50 you get page R sequencer and a selection of Series III sounds as well. I don't think anyone would not notice that Bob Moog was talking about a 1981 machine using eight inch floppies, not the iPad app. Sadly he is not around to play with a iPad. I'm sure he'd love it.
@synthetic24 There isn't even an apple version released yet. Would make sense if fairlightinstruments get no joy for approval with apple then hopefully an android version will be progressed.
No, there are no effects, just the line output which you can patch into whatever analogue outboard devices you like. The processor is pretty much occupied just playing an 8 track sequence. Tracks cannot be exported digitally (in this first version, anyway). I guess you could solo each track and then multitrack it - there is no synch but the speed should be very accurate. I expect someone will try it and let us know how it goes!
@FairlightInstruments That is understandable considering the platform limitations. If you in the future should work in a way to export, I think that would make it even more desirable! (:
As long as you're there Peter, thank you and mr. Ryrie for what you have done! I'm sure you've heard it a million times before, but so many of my favourite records owe a lot to that machine! Personally I have always had an obsession for Page-R and that particular way of building tracks.
Are there any effects to apply to individual channels/instruments? Or will anything made with this be completely dry? Can a track be exported as separate tracks for each instrument?
@massimostefani The Fairlight app has completed beta testing and has been submitted to Apple for approval! We hope to see it in the app store in the next week or so. In a late sprint to the finish line, we added support for the Akai Synthstation 25. The Fairlight app support pages are now live on the Fairlight website fairlightinstruments (dot) com (dot) au/ios
As soon as this becomes available to buy on the app store I'll purchase the new ipad 2 to give this wonderful application justice. My favourite vinyl music collection all feature fairlight cmi - Mike Oldfield Crises and U2 unforgetable fire plus all the Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel albums with their superb fairlight compositions.
I would also like to see a more in depth review of this, maybe building of a song from scratch, a walk-through and look at all features, etc. That would be nice.
Sorry Fairlight Instruments, huge misunderstanding on my part. Previous comment removed. Nice demo. I hope that one day a VSTi will see the light of day.
From the text accompanying this video: "The sound track of this video is also one of the app's built-in demos. 'Octagonalle' was created using original Series II library sounds on the Fairlight iPad app by producer/composer Justin Shave."

@FairlightInstruments Aww, that's very sweet of you! My latest vid is on my profile and also linked from the 'Your Woman' vid. :-)
To be honest, I'm also very interested in the hardware re-issue. For me, the Fairlight is a magical instrument.
I think my fave Fairlighting is either The Art Of Noise's debut album. JJ Jeczalik was a true virtuoso of your instrument!
JyotiMishra 1 year ago
@JyotiMishra JJ certainly was a master when it came to the CMI and was behind so many great pieces that emerged from ZTT and Sarm via Trevor Horn.
As for the hardware, we are now taking orders! So, if you are in anyway tempted, get in quick as only 100 will be made :-)
See the links in the video description.
