I used to HATE the Bears but I always absolutely LOVED Payton. The guy was 100% class and one of the best athletes of the 20th century along withy Man 'O War and Secretariat and of course Michael Jordan! God love 'em all! RIP Walter! You were a pleasure and an honor to watch! And you were all class!
NFC Central (North) has had some of the best running backs ever!!!!!! Jim Taylor, Paul Horning, Gayle Sayers, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders and Adrian Peterson. I'm a Vikings fan but god I love watching the highlights of Walter Payton, Gayle Sayers and Barry Sanders, Horning and Taylor were the best of their time, and AP is carrying the torch!
you know why walter payton is the greatest football player ever? because he used blocks and when there were no blocks he went around everyone, not go where everyone was like modern day football players
attention all high school and college running backs: if you dream of playing in the NFL, watch highlights of Walter. the only instruction you'll ever need.
Boker111, I agree with mrmojow, you need to learn football. Research the complete stats to include the offensive line i.e. blocking and team each had in front of them. One of many contibuting examples is, Detroit made it to the playoffs 6 times in Barry’s career which reflects a fairly decent team with a couple of pro-bowl O-lineman spots achieved. The Bears were not even close to that in Payton’s whole career. In a nutshell, Walter did a lot more with a lot less than any RB in history, period!
I don't think many can dispute his greatness. Probably the best combination of speed, power, elusiveness, passing, receiving and most of all...HEART!!!
@boker111 Kid you know nothing about football, Walter Payton was the greatest RB to ever play, he could run, catch, block, throw, even kick the damn ball.....shut up and learn some football!
Never ran out of bounds. Only RB to do that. He never passed up an opportunity to deliver a crushing hit to his opponent. He felt that he was stronger and that he could wear down his opponents that way. It also served as a sort of intimidation factor against weaker guys who didn't like to take the punishment.
Ill give you everything you said about Payton, except being the only RB to never run outta bounds. Lets not forget Earl Campbell, he was known for not going out.
Walter was the best. Barry cant hold his jockstrap. *** hmmm barry pickin up bliltz on 3rd down??? never happend*** Barry was a liability on short yardage.
I like the way he runs. he had mad agility and love the high stepping run. I see where Barry gets his running style from as well. Payton was agile even though Barry is more agile, Payton was the best hands down.

still gives me goose bumps. I grew up in IL, watching him, too. 200 yards and Bears lose. Sunday after Sunday.

I remember a defender once saying,"If you're gonna tackle Payton, be ready to take a hit."
The dude just never gave up.
