Object permanence is the sort of "out of sight, out of mind" phenomenon that happens when you surprise an infant by playing 'peek-a-boo" with them for example, where you literally disappear from the infant's world until you remove your hands. Great demonstration video of this concept though, and it's fun to mess with kids a bit, isn't it!
