I hate the fact that in SS, every other week you bench twice and only push press once. It seems so much less effective than the Overhead standing press.
As for bench being less useful than OH pressing, ask yourself which press college and NFL combines test for reps? Everyday life? Do you push a door open in front of you or above you? OH press is important, yes, as an accessory exercise. It can never replace bench pressing, IMHO. Look up Dave Tate's Six Week Bench Press Cure for a proper clinic in benching. No 12 year old boys or Caravan moms demonstrating, I promise.
@gsorrell204 Doors don't weigh 600lbs. What do linemen use on the field? I'll give you a hint they are closer to horizontal than vertical so they are pressing the other guys back using more of an OHP than BP. Also when you OHP you are working your posterior chain, abs, obliques, legs etc. BP? Shoulders and chest.
@DJS12345678 Why do one? It's funny because I have read articles by a lot of coaches who think the bench press is crap as a test to see if someone can play football. Olympic style lifting makes a whole lot more sense. Triple extension, explosiveness and frankly the most bang for your buck as far as the most strength gain over all in the least amount of gym time.
@DJS12345678 Who the fuck is we? LOL The video tags are " Weightlifting Power lifting bodybuilding barbell training". That covers bodybuilders, powerlifters, oly lifters, football players, soccer players, bowlers....lol
@MichaelnChristine the individual subject was the best type of press relating towards football, you need both powerlifting and oly lifting for football so just chill out
@DJS12345678 How is an incline Db press Power Lifting? LOL Seriously mate you are the one playing internet cop and then getting testy when people don't "respect ya authoray". LOL
I completely disagree with bench press being less useful than military/overhead press for sports/athletic training. Bench pressing, properly done, is a whole body exercise. It teaches you how to activate your lats, use leg drive, and most importantly, saves your shoulders. In sports, how often do you mimic overhead pressing vs pushing in front of you? Linebackers drive forward, vballers need to explode off the ground after a dig, grapplers push and pull, hockey players check and brawl....
@gsorrell204 Yea I agree that benching isn't overstated like Rip says cuz its necessary for building functional strength in sports but it seems less natural than the Overhead IMO. It also makes sense to me that any exercise done standing is superior to one done laying down. However, at the same time, I'd probably rather focus on lifting more weight and I'm not about to press 235 lbs over my head ya know?
@MutsuKazuma Not quite the same, the angle between the torso and arms in the push up is slightly acute, giving it aspects of the decline bench. Also the weight bearing/supporting roles are reversed meaning that the core has a much greater role in the actual lift rather than simply maintaining stability.
A close grip bench will always be the longest bench press of the 3. The more you move your hands outside a straight line the shorter the ROM will be. On a close grip bench you leave the hands in a straight line and tuck in the elbows to the body keeping the forearms in a vertical line not folded onto the body.
@Fstick wrong, you are not understanding him, do a close grip bench press, see how far your elbows go back, and how much your chest stretches, now try it the way he told you. fuckstick.

@mjs0077 push ups aren't unnatural, and if you would weights onto your back the motion is the same as bench presses
