All Gypsy people are descendants of Indian people (they are immigrants to Spain & France from India over about 800 years)... that's why they sing & play like this. Music is one of the most important & ancient traditions of Indian culture & civilization. Gypsies inherited music in their blood from India, that's why they move their voices like Indian singers which are amongst the most skillful & acrobatic singers/musicians/ dancers in the world.
I wish the Gipsy kings would come to New Zealand. Talented and beautiful music, I don't understand Spanish but it doesn't matter the music rises above any language.

It's incredible the impact 800 years of Moorish dominance has had upon Spain. This song represents only a mere reflection of that amazing culture left behind a long time ago.
they are not moorish people, i think you are confused and don't know a lot of moorish cultures, this singers are gypsys, they copy the moorish people songs, but they are not from Moorish culture, they moorish hate them cause the gypsys are consider pagans and had different traditions and cultures, as well as blood.
@motan1968 I think you have to read books about spanish history romanis dont have moorish roots they came from India,Gitano music is not the reflection of islamic culture at all.
True. That's why Gypsies (word which comes from "Egyptian" are usually darker toned) some are even black-ish...u know which the "Moros". I think Spanish is so beautiful- the culture, the language, the country, the people- because of all its mixtures and rich history. Viento Del Arena is the most underestimated of all great songs. OLÉ
like you wouldnt believe! There's so much energy flowing though the air when they play. The only thing is that theyve changed their repertoire over the years and alot of songs like this one arent played any more.
"God,I sing your splendor, You who are the earth and the fire, the water and the wind. All your sons of the wind are your sons All the sons of the winds are brothers. This is why i sing my brothers of the desert, the sons of the sand of the desert".
It's because is not European but from the Arab World and far East brought by the gipsies and Mours when they invaded Europe. The pure spanish race come from the North of Spain and same thing goes to Portugal.
true, that's why arabs, or those who have some arabic blood in them (like me) reallly feel this music. By the way, even the flamenco 'ole' is probably a derivative of the Arabic way of saying 'God' and exclaiming greatness: Allah

This is an Arabic song from the sixties (Saudi Song by Talal Maddah) but played the Gipsy Kings way (THe Original song is called: Ya Reem Wadi Thageef)
Notice that in those times, Spain didn't exist. It was only kindons-castles here/there. Everyone in the Peninsula was adquiring territory. The moors got to the land & took some for their king. I think of sand dunes in Sahara! Bye
they mix it up don't they?? :) their brother-in-law [Chico - he's way right next to Canut] is Algerian -- he must have had alot of input for this one/ in fact on the "US tour '90" video's version at the end he adds a cool little overlapping chant w/ the lailos that make it sound even more arabic-ish -- awesome!
hammerogod, that is not the reason. The arabic sound has been added deliverately to the gipsy music they produce. Gipsys're a different ethnic group; not descendants from moorish, not spanish, or french; just gipsys. The Moorish culture that lived in Spain was a very independent & totally different from the Spanish Christian inhabitants. The moors occupied the Andalusian/Levante regions.
By the picture in your profile you look a little hindu,so what's so funny about gypsies coming from the north of India,if you don't know read books about it and educate yourself.
Well i think you should check were spanish gypsies and gipsies in general came from (north of India),the Gipsy Kings are sons of a famous spanish flamenco singer Jose Reyes who escape general Franco persecusion of gipsies during his ruling,so that makes them very spanish, spanish gipsys.gracias.

marykmusic, you obviously know about European old history. Most people keep on with such sterotypes! They should be careful how they speak about spanish people, the great majority have no moorish heritage at all! They're simply who they have always been Spaniards. Their heritage is that of the different cultures that make Spain.
History is all about stories. People are not familiar with history because it's not being taught in the old way anymore, by storytellers and poets. Now it's something that many students grow to hate and avoid, because they're forced to memorize so many names and dates... but to me, it's all fascinating.
marykmusic, I agree; it's sad that history isn't taught in a different way- "factual" history without the prejudice, or fantasy. Simply as it was, with an understanding of the "times" & the "peoples" involved.

Because of the influence of the Moorish culture on Spain this music does have an "Arabic" heritage.
Anyway:
The guys make every song they sing something magical.
The even pwned The Eagles when they covered "Hotel California", added some real heat to it, and made it something that The Eagles never could.
