Jimmy Reed sings "Cold and Lonesome"

That first position harp technique is what makes his playing so unique. He sounds like a rusty hinge. Blues Harp players didn't play in that in the 50s. John Hammond did later but he was influenced by Reed. I can't think of anyone else who plays 1st position on the Diatonic Harp. There might be some but Reed is the first I ever heard.

Grew up with my cousins who cut their musical chops on Jimmy Reed and the Blues!! When you talk about the pioneers of the Blues, You CANNOT leave out JR!!! I still have the double album on vinyl--Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall and The Best of Jimmy Reed. I played those 12 inchers till you could practically see through them! Jimmy's music is immortal!!!

dont know how to answer ---from a small town in texas all we had was jimmy reed,

bobbie blue bland-percey sledge and big mama will may thornton---but jimmy was probably the most popular he made a few appearances in houston--but i was not allowed to go---i noticed percey sledge and jerry lee lewis are performing in winnie, tx this week end----would sure like to go but have to save my money for the following week for merle haggard who i loved for 30 years--love all old songs that make me cry

The fellow in the photo is in fact, Jimmy Reed, but Lil Jimmy Reed (AKA Leon Atkins)...and very talented.

i did not think this looked like jimmy---he used to play in houston and i was too young to go (according to my mom) and nevery had enough money----i lived about 30 miles from houston and in early 60's moved to california for 6 months---they never played jimmy reed --they called rock and roll---jan and dean, pat boon--groups like beach boys----i dont know what i was expecting in calif--but music was nothing like down south---but my radio only cost about 10.00 and did not pick up much--love jr

Like somebody already mentioned the person on the photo is "Little Jimmy Reed" - a musician who started as an impersonator of J.Reed but later found a style of his own. Just saw a video of Little Jimmy Reed - he is really good but sounds quite different.

@2009framat 'Little Jimmy Reed' lives in Enterprise, AL. He is still performing. Runs a barber shop. Really neat guy to talk to. He started out playing a cigar box guitar.
