  • can you teach me how to dance really slow..

  • I believe this to be the definitive version of this classic.

  • Probably the best pop/folk song ever written - ever, but I've never heard him sing it so badly.

  • "American Pie" turned the plane crash into a metaphor for the moment when America lost its last shred of innocence. McLean envisioned that last Buddy Holly concert in Clear Lakes, Iowa: teenagers in pink carnations and pick-up trucks, dancing and falling in love and dancing some more. The snow fell silently outside as the country teetered on the brink of the 1960s; no one in the ballroom had any idea what would happen next."

  • Wtf is wrong with that audience?!

  • Man, I wish I was alive back then when music was good. I hate all this pop crap that kids my age listen to.

  • @AustinAlexanderAW My friends are tired of me whining about how I was born in the wrong decade.

  • increible!!!

  • Did you know this song was written for American song writers Rithie Valens, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper after they all died in a plane crash in Iowa. They were all ICONIC singers. What a GREAT song (:

  • esto suena fregon en vivo x,D

  • MUSIC. Just a guy with a guitar? Thanks dad.....you were right.

  • My dads song

  • да, я совершенно согласна. Это классика.

  • is he the original of this song?

  • @R0CKGURL Yes.

  • This song has made me who I am today.

  • One man, one guitar. All those computer blip blops are not necessary.

  • The acoustics at that venue are amazing lol

  • 35 people deserve to die

  • I knew I had heard the words Helter Skelter before I ever even knew about Charles Manson and the Beatles song.

  • one of my most-loved and favorite songs

  • Dion took a bus...

  • I love this song! And I'm not American, or a pie!

  • the last verse is amazing

  • One of the best, most lasting songs ever written. Everyone in Europe knows it.

  • This song belongs to the world, not just to America. It's very possible that even those who don't like America like this song.

  • @emofolkie I feel the same way this song belongs to anybody in the world. This song belongs to anybody who feels this song, or sings it.

  • @pezwoman1 Does this song touch you in some way as it does me and makes me feel happy and a little sad, and glaq to hear the song?

  • Respond to this video... Thank you for posting the video you made my week!

  • I feel that this song touches anyone no matter their country. It's the human sprit.

  • Respond to this video... I haven't figured out if its the lyrics? or the music? or the message? that makes the song? or the combination?

  • This song is actually fairly complicated in it's chord progression, which is basically a chord change every word. You don't see that any more, it's all four chord songs. Makes me appreciate this even more.

  • w polsce jakby ktoś zrobił taką piosenkę o katastrofie smoleńskiej to zapewne J. kaczynski pozwalby go do sadu

  • @zachattack131 Now, one more idiot has added himself to those ranks!! ;0(

  • Best version.period

  • just one word...AMAZING

  • wow bob dylan's shit now

  • This is the best version there is. I always liked it so much better when he did it solo and sang it like this. The late 70's to now kinda killed the song for me, so I only listen to the lp version and this live one

  • @tatethompson1234 I think the '72 live video from the BBC Top of the Pops is better than this because there are a lot of close ups of Don there. And he sings this faster there which really rocks it.

  • awesomely cool

  • This is from the Royal Albert Hall in 1973.

  • @joshuabrooks21 dude, I'm with ya all the way on that one.

  • america's drinking song

  • my fav version of the song :)

  • When and where was this performed?

  • normally a song from 8 minuts i would stop at 3:00 but this song i would listen for 5 hours and longer

  • Thumbs up if Grand Rapids brought you here.

  • a generation lost in space

  • I believe this is the exact recording used in the Grand Rapids Lip Dub. Always been a fantastic song, always will be.

  • Come to Grand Rapids. It would be a spiritual event.

  • Thanks Don. Times were different then. Simpler, but no less tragic .. or joyful. Love the tune.

  • Grand Rapids did a better version of this video.

  • "Yippie!! I'm on YouTube!!" ~ Don McLean

  • G-R LipDub!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What year was that?

  • I can't believe I've only heard Madonnas version. >:C What dusty hole did I crawl out off!? Absolutely love this, I'm even getting goosebumps all over. :D

  • Hahah I came here from the Grand Rapids lipdub. Anyone else?

  • what a perfect song

  • Thanks so much for postin this!

  • To all of you speculators, I will always remember a quote from an interview at the time this song was popular.... "people will never be happy until they've destroyed whatever magic they've found in the first place." Wise words.

  • To all of you speculators, I will always remember a quote from an interview at the time this song was popular.... "people will never be happy until they've destroyed whatever magic they've found in the first place." Wise words.

  • One of the finest songs ever made...

  • The crowd are British, He's a legend here too!!!

  • this is the best thanks!

  • still don't know why this song isn't the national athem of the USA.

  • @WuCSquad then you don't know anything about being american

  • @vicboi87

That is very true, I'm not even an American, I lived in the Netherlands all my life. But where I was born isn't the issue here, in my understanding America stood for something, this song describes height and lows of American history, in short: it describes life in general. My opinion is that a national athem must do just that. It must describe the history and where the people stand for...

I just miss that in the national athems of today (America, the Netherlands and all the others)

  • @WuCSquad AMEN to that statement my friend!

  • @WuCSquad Relax, we all know it is. Even if it is unofficial.

  • Como pode ter 33 FDP, PNC, do caralho que não gosta? kkkkkkkkkkk

  • Man the sound of the entire crowd singing along is breathtaking!

  • I'm a fan of that girl who raised to clap the hands at the beginning! She really felt the song!

  • this song gave me the greatest fuck ever

  • This song is a loose tribute to all the events that were going on at the time. Examples include the deaths of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper, Charles Manson's "Family," The British invasion, Bob Dylan (The Jester, on the sidelines, in a cast) and so on. I personally think this song is a tribute to all the historical events the late fifties to the early seventies produced. Who's with me?

  • @joshuabrooks21 On McLean's website he states that it's partially based on that, but also just an autobiography of himself that starts when Buddy Holly died in 1959. They were "the only heroes he ever had" according to McLean. his father died in 61, then Kennedy was shot, and suddenly the country was thrown into a chaotic environment. Supposedly it's abstract and I read somewhere-in another interview- that it was in the point of view of someone going through a dream.

  • @Sshelly34213 Everyone has their own speculation, and McClean himself has been evasive as to what this song is about. However, it's still one of the greatest songs ever written.

  • @joshuabrooks21 This isn't a speculation, it's on his website and he's stated these exact things in many interviews.

  • @Sshelly34213 Okay, but Don may be pulling your leg. I've heard rumors that he's been evasive as to some of his inspirations in this song. I've never heard him speak of it personally, but you may never know...

  • @joshuabrooks21 ...I just said it's on his website. lol. He has spoken about it in interviews, but he hasn't interpreted everything for us. He's acknowledged that it's a tribute to Buddy Holly, it's autobiographical, it's about the transition during the 60s, and that Joplin is the "lady who sings the blues" and Dylan the "Jester who stole the thorny crown." Now that doesn't begin to interpret everything, but it does give us a sense of what it's about.

  • @Sshelly34213 Indeed.

  • @joshuabrooks21 I am!

  • @TheDonpedrossy You are what?

  • @joshuabrooks21 I am!!

  • @joshuabrooks21 I am!!!

  • @joshuabrooks21 I know that after many years (I think in the 90's) that Don McLean finally did admit that the first verse helped him cope with the death of Buddy Holly, which apparently was rather hard for him.

  • @joshuabrooks21 Song is actually criticism about society, politics and economic that's on what revolution from '68. based upon, but many people confuse good rhythm and nice melodies with actually meaning of song

  • @TheVodKanockers Indeed.

  • Nobody, but nobody does it better than Don.

  • this reminds me of rides in my Dad's 65 Chevy Impala back when America was great

  • Thumbs up for greatest song of all time.

  • Ace.

  • This is one of the better versions of this song that I've heard. I def think I was born in the wrong decade... I'm an 80's baby, early 80's, but 80's nonetheless...

  • what an awesome audience

  • Sixties meets seventies. At this exact moment.

  • This song is as American as well, American Pie.

  • He was on fire this day! I don't think I have ever seen a more energetic performance from Don than this.

  • ¡AWESOME!

  • Killed in this tragic plane crash were Buddy Holly,Ritchie Valens,J.P.Richardson & of course the pilot roger peterson.Buddy holly inspired The Beatles who in turn inspired Oasis....

  • One day, somone asked him "What does American pie mean?" his reply, with a laugh, was "It means ill never have to work again."

  • this started rock bitches ya n 31 pepole missed the thmb up buttion lmao

  • love this sng

  • In honor of Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens and that other guy.

  • what year is this?

  • Look! His guitar is not even amplified, and the microphones are held together with scotch tape! ahahah! This is "that time" 's music. Look! Each and every today's phenomenon has a perfect audio setting, expensive instruments, maybe 1 per each song to be performed. WOW!

So, please, tell me how did it end up like this... Why am I so nostalgic about a time i didn't live in?

  • @SergeantHymen - Don Mclean was the author of this song, and was not a talentless musician by any stretch of the imagination. Perhaps you could tell me what wonderous work you have done, or what you consider to be the pinnacle of songwriting? Your comments are ad hominem, and have no basis in fact.

  • The 31 morons that hit "dislike" need to be flogged, in public, with a blunt object. This is, and will always be, one of the greatest songs ever written.

  • This was absolutely perfect I have'nt heard this recording before. It is now my very best.

  • Lets just throw words together that rhyme and the stupid people will enjoy it.

    Worst song in history. Ever.

  • @SergeantHymen You obviously have no knowledge of older music this song is mostly about the death of Jiles Perry "J. P." Richardson, Jr.(The Big Bopper), Ritchie Vallens, and Buddy Holly. There are also alot of other musical references like lennon read a book on marx refers to john lennons socialists views voiced in "Imagine" There is nothing pointless about this song hes singing about music form an era you are ignorant of there is nothing rudeabout my comment im just correcting you.

  • @alchoholic20 I don't need correction, sir. Clearly, you're an idiot.

  • @SergeantHymen you clearly needed correction

  • @alchoholic20 I do have knowledge of older music and it seems that the only way this talentless prick could make a dime, was to make a song about talented musicians (The Rolling Stones, John Lennon) and rhyme a bunch of words together.

  • @SergeantHymen Don't be a dumbass...the song is about DON MCLEAN. Jesus get your facts straight before you make fun of someone....

It's an autobiographical song about Don McLean's life, it starts when Buddy Holly/the 50s died..

Think of it as the "9/11" of his childhood. His father also died shortly around then.

  • @SergeantHymen Go listen to his other albums, Tapestry, Homeless Brother, and self titled Don McLean. How can you assess a musical career based on only one song? Don McLean couldn't have predicted that this song, out of all of his songs would have been his most well known songs.

  • @SergeantHymen you clearly needed correction.

  • @SergeantHymen LOL And yet you are commenting here, on the video that you hate. Now who's stupid?

  • @DixieSolo I didn't look the video up on my own. Somebody was being a wise ass and sent me the link, knowing that I loathe this song. Thought i would voice my opinion, that's all.

  • @SergeantHymen That's cool. ; )

  • @SergeantHymen your fucked go away ,mclean is part of american history.

  • @SergeantHymen And where were you the Day the Music Died?

  • MAGNIFICENT & TIMELESS!!! Thank you for sharing this incredible live performance & thank you Mt. Don McLean for this classic masterpiece....xoxoxoxo

  • Gerber's should have never stopped making that flavor.

  • Just a comment to mazanadecoco, you are a typical lemming, a useful idiot that does nothing more than repeat crap that you hear, I hope that you are not in my country (THE GRET USofA), because if you are, why torture yourself, leave, go to a wonderful place such as iran, iraq, you know, wonderful places like that where you can freely voice your opinion without repercussions. , you would be the dumb ass that would be apologizing to a terorist for dulling his blade as he is cutting your head off.

  • @gcerdan poor terrorist

  • music for millions - nearly the best of ALL . other comments just to ignore it

    reinhold3

  • music save my mortal soul

  • This is a great song. But what does it have to do with supporting troops? Nothing, that's what. Just enjoy the music and stop trying con others into your narrow mind set.

  • Madonna should be shot for singing this song, she ruined it.
