I think "really big ones" that you describe are craneflies. We get them a lot here, too. I don't think I would even do this anymore like when I was a kid. We have rats around our house. If you raised mosquitoes from egg/larvae/pupae, mated them and donated the blood to the females you should be ok since they haven't had a blood meal before that.

I hear if you pinch the skin around the mosquito, it is unable to remove the needle. also blood rushes into the parasite causing it to "explode". I would love to see footage of this. I am now seriously interested in finding out weather this is a myth or not.

yep, that was because in the second half (2:40-) of the vid, i relaxed my arm muscles to give her free drink and let her escape.

before 2:40, you can see her desperately trying to pull out the syringe several times but in vain.

That's not at all what she's doing. If you look closely, she keeps pulling out slightly, changing the angle of penetration, then reinserting. She is hunting for a blood supply and, when she finally finds it, she stops that activity and begins filling up with blood. I've sometimes had them pull completely out and try a new, nearby spot when they finally give up on the one they start in. She'll do exactly the same thing if you DON'T clench.

i've heard that their mouth needle is serrated microscopically, isn't it?

for many years i have presumed that

if i clench my fist, the needle was stuck in the tense skin/tissue and couldn't be pulled out ONLY WHEN it was inserted deep enough.

the timing of ur clenching matters, i guess.

Sorry for the confusion! If she can't find blood after several angle changes, she will voluntarily pull out, move to a new spot and try again. As for the clenching, I've never tried it. You're right about the serrated syringe but I really don't think it can be trapped by clenching. There is nothing close enough to the surface of the skin that can be tensed. Try tensing just before she is completely full and ready to pull out. I don't think she will have any trouble. But I am fascinated!
