  • Compare this to Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory. The entire movie is posted on YouTube.

  • imagine the donkeys declare war, and no lion takes part of it.

  • Thank you to the brave men of newfoundland.

    From Scotland.

  • Excellently done and researched program! Kindness and love among humans were lost in 1914...sadly we have not seen a return of them since. The troubles of the world we experience today have their roots in the Great War of 1914-1918.

  • Anyone who speaks of a " victory " for 1918 is a damn stupid brute. 1/ it wasn't a victory for anyone = all countries were as well kneeling down. 2/ this stupid behaviour of French& allied politics, propelled Germany into the need for revenge!Germany couldn't accept to be treated such a way .They couldn't understand, and any of western nations,in same condition, would have behaved the same way : revenge! Too long to tell here, but the only winner were Rothschild Bank :already the OWNER of UK

  • Amazing how these two Brittish men easily relate to the last hours of their grand fathers young' life . But amazing as well , how their curiosity stops here. No one is asking THE UTMOSTquestion = how this hudge bloodshed could have started ? How the incredible funnies inside our history books could have been taken as the Truth ? Guys from plain people arn't that stupid ! Common sens can't take the Sarajevo false flag sitcom as THE truth every body has to chew to merely erase so many crimes .

  • wait im confused if this was the first battle. america wasnt in the war yet. but they said the british was under german machine gun?. confused america introduced the machine gun to the war. they created it and thats what won them the war. so how does germany have it please explain

  • @NarutoVids55 No this wasn't the first battle of the war but it was the first major offensive battle by the British. The machine gun was invented ~30 years before the war by an American, Hiram Maxim. However all major nations had licensed versions of the Maxim machine gun, that is why all the machine guns of the time look similar. The Americans didn't win the war it was a joined effort by all Allied Nations. The Germans used the MG better at the beginning of the war than the Allies.

  • @Kettch23 actually the americans played a "minor" role in ww1. It was more the straw that broke the camels back than the overwhelming might the US was in the second world war (check out articles about RN 6th battle squadron/US BB devision Nine). That said, i dont want to underestimate the contributions by the american soldiers either.

@Naruto, also note that while this was the first british offensive, it was by no means the first large british battle, before that it was e.g. marne.

  • @Kettch23 Very Good Answer!

  • @NarutoVids55 I think you need to read more about the First World War. To say that the US "won the war" because of a machine gun is nonsense - the Germans and British and French had machine guns before 1917 when the US joined the war and it didn't make the difference.

  • All I can say is thank you.

  • Thanks for the vids, they bring a very personal touch to the horror

  • Incredible research. Poignant, putting a human face on this event. Very powerful.

  • Have to say, this film is one of the best pieces of work on the somme iv'e ever seen, thought the two brothers did their family proud. As for the family Haig, they don't put themselves in the limelight, never seem to comment on anything regarding the BUTCHER HAIG, i hope he rots in hell.Well done to all concerned in this production.

  • Remarquable reportage, enquête parfaite et exemplaire. Bravo les anglais!

  • The British Top Brass were a bunch of toffy nosed sensless cowards. Never got their brogues and spats dirty...otherwise never got close to the thousands of teenagers who manned the trenches, waiting for another stupid order to go over the top...poor kids.

I hope the Haig family pay for his stupidity. In one day 60,000 young men paid the highest price!

  • where is god any day of the week?

  • I've seen many many documentaries about the military history and the Great War in particular. I'd rate this as one of the best ones so far. This is exactly how you should study history; use the techology and material we have today, but still see the trouble of actually going there.

  • the battle of somme was one of the worst mistakes of any war. Haig was a fool. The men who died were true hero's.

  • It just breaks my heart .

The part of " and will have no known graves" I started crying.

Both my grandfathers were in the Second World War, never knew neither of them.

Wish I could hear them talk stories .

I miss them all very much.

  • My hat is off to all of the researchers. Wow! What a tremendous amount of work they put into this. Absolutely intriguing and amazing discoveries along with pinpointing the exact ground where original footage was shot. Great, great job.

  • Anne Dawson is FIT FIT FIT!!!!!

  • my dad was a first gulf war vet only action he saw was when he was on uss tripoli and a mine hit it now he gots gulf war syndrome

  • my grandma's uncle survived this battle without injury, very lucky.

  • @Malachai2012 so did my great grandfather and his brother.

  • My great grandad fought and died on the somme, i have been lucky enough to visit there and ypres. Liveth for ever more <3

  • The battle of the somme was the worst offensive ever. That's all.

  • And a battle inside your head, is never won.

Watch the video: shell shock verdun.

Ever after 90 years, it's real.

It's as real, if it was,............ then.

  • Hey people, why don't you pay these soldiers due respect and stop all the derogatory comments? Lest we forget the sacrifice...

  • Holy Shit. The cyber war that is being waged here is just as fierce as to what is being shown on this vid.

  • Great videos, too bad about all the flame war comments though.

  • a vet fixed my poorly hamster.

  • not the place for jokes you retard show some respect

  • what the hell?i cant even find MY comment, what was it?

  • god bless any and all veterans of any combat!

  • well, mostly those who fought for freedom, not for enslaving others ;-)

  • yea i forgot that part lol only combat vets who fight to protect freedom

  • otherwise, if no difference is drawn, some people may end up doing some kind of tribute to the SS einzatsgrup and the like.

    all the best from spain

  • Thera are not only Englanders. Thera are French and German too. First day costs about lives of 60000 man. More then dies Russians durin all half a year Battle of Stalingrad! For me its something out of imagination.

  • pure madness, respect for those who gave there lives for 6 miles of land.

    rip

  • nice documentary,tnx for posting it,more power

  • Thankyou

  • 1 million men in exchange for 6 miles advance into German held lands.

Are we, the human race, completely mad?

Lions led by donkeys. God bless all the brave men who died.

  • @nacho1560 So....where was god that day?

  • @nacho1560 No, The British invented the The Tank. In order to break the stalemate.

  • fantastic documentary...thanx for posting it.i have just got back from a battlefield tour of the ypres salient, arras and the somme...or the ancre as that river was closer to the british and allied forces.a very humbling experience which i will never ever forget.i hope to visit next year ..and the next..and the next....Dave,Coventry.

  • Simply captivating. About the first combat footage ever-were the troops filmed Lancashire Fusiliers?

  • Today I'm old enough to say that all those KIDS had the right to expect more out of life than to end up dying prematurely the way they did. To me, every single one of them is like a brother or a cousin or an uncle or a grandfather or a grandson that just didn't make it and I never had the pleasure to know...

  • I look and watch these scenes and immediatly the words of a german commander comes to mind regarding the brave soldiers who faced the germans in WW1,when he referred to the British and allied troops as "Lions led by Donkeys" and how right he was, were was the sense in continually sending young men to there certain deaths,RIP to all soldiers and civilians who have died in these bitter conflicts,,RIP

  • Best documentary I have ever seen. Thankyou so much for sharing this.

  • Excellent and the best thing is it's about the people who gave all, at the Somme. May they rest in peace.

  • Great documentary!

  • It's extraordinary to see people treat their history, no matter how old, with such dignity and respect.

  • Excellent! I am a High School World History teacher and I teach a unit on WWI. This is outstanding stuff. Does anyone know if this is available on DVD????

  • Dunno but I would love to see a DVD release of this, especially if the extra was the original footage with teh subtitles transcribed by the deaf lady in the earlier part.

Would your school not let you download a snide torrent?

P.s. I hope you would clip your kids round the ear if they added so many question marks to their writing, as you have!;-)

  • What are talking about?

If you want this on DVD tell it the BBC not me or torrent it. Keep in mind that I don't like to read confusing comments ;)

  • I asked a genuine question and you give me this? I'm soooooooooo sorry I confused you.

Here, is this to confusing for you? Go screw yourself - snob!

  • Sorry where did you ask this question? You seem to be a grown man act like it! And if you insult people here again, I will block and I don't even know what was wrong in the first place ...

  • What's wrong with you? I was replying to djmoore, who asked if there was a DVD available. It has nothing to do with you.

  • Calm down, you weirdo! Notice the smiley face on both the ends of mine and Kettch's posts.

  • Thank you for posting those eight videos. Thought-provoking stuff. The lip reader in 5 particularly so - very talented!

  • William Holland was my Great Uncle. Although it does appear that he may not be the soldier in the film, I found it very moving and has made me realise what he must have gone through. I can remember my grandad telling us about his brother who rescued a woman from drowning. To me he was a hero, just like all the other soldiers who put their lives on the line for us. Thankyou.

  • the man on that video was indeed not your Great Uncle, but my Grandad, who was named William, thats were they must have mixed them up.

  • Thanks so much to whoever posted this documentary here - it oozes authenticity and shows me what my grandfather, a junior officer on the Somme, went through.

  • cheers for the upload "least we forget" you would happen to have anything on the ANZAC's would you?

  • I could upload stuff from the ANZAC's, any favourite scenes you want to see here?

  • Was ist das?

  • Thanks for share!!! Excellent !!

  • Fascinating.I've been to Beaumont Hamel twice but its nice to see a personal connection.

  • Thank you so much it was wonderful

  • Marvelous. Thanks for uploading this.

  • Thanks for the upload.

  • It was actually a bit touching at the end, to see the brothers paying their respects.

  • Thanks really much for the post. I really appreciate the opportunity to see how things not normally covered about war, can still have an impact on the hearts of people 90 years later.

  • A great show! Thanks for making this available on Youtube.

  • Thank you for putting these up! We appreciate it!

  • Great series, thanks for posting.
