Screw all you haters. China was, is, and always will be the greatest Empire the world has ever seen. Even the Mongols couldn't have succeeded without Chinese weapons, technology, and professional allies. The past century is a small blemish in their glorious history. Soon China will bring the world to its knees. It has already begun.
"Let China sleep for when she wakes, she will shake the world"- Napoleon Bonaparte
@aa3gunner oh i loved your comments mate! brilliaaaaaaaaant! really well said! yes, china is still china with any other name given by those westernised or western folks. cheerio!
@aa3gunner hmm, China was built through conquest, assimilation and political marriage. China is as stable as the European Union, with different background and dialect. What is holding it together is the government severe stance. Most Chinese hold in contempt those from Beijing. She is an interesting country but before being great she needs to make its citizen to want to stay in their country. Not so right now, since they seek to immigrate elsewhere if they can. Unless your the super-rich.
@omniouseye CHina was built through multiple civil wars and bitter rivalries between states and ethnic groups. It is not in the same context as how the Europeans built their overseas empires. The Europeans pillaged, raped, colonized and exploited. Even the Mongols didn't go as far as what the Europeans did. Whatever ravaged China in the 20th century is a result of Communism- which is a European invention. Slowly but surely, their policies are moving towards more freedoms.
@aa3gunner Political turmoil are created always for the same reason. A group of people wanting to on the top of the social pyramid, no exception. Its the same thing as a exclusive oligarchic structure, except instead of having the imperial nobles and courtesans you got the peoples party. Theirs sons of those politician are princes. As for colonization, you can't be that naives? Tibet? Southern skirmishes with SE asians. Korean conquest? No rapes? there always are.
@aa3gunner China didnt get to behave like the Europeans did because they weren't top dogs in those times. But before Europeans got interested in asia in the 19th century, their sphere of influence always was strong and suffocating in Asia. With smaller nation giving them tributes regularly. If they could have conquered, they would have. No nation refuses expansion if the opportunity arises. Political map are more rigid now due to international community comings.
@omniouseye . WRONG. Haven't you heard of Zheng He and the Treasure Fleet of the Dragon Throne? 300 ships 5x the size of Columbus' Santa Maria sailed around the entire Eastern Hemisphere, possibly even landing in the New World almost a century before Columbus. China had advanced gunpowder weapons on their ships. China could have most certainly colonized the world. But new government policies changed all that. China was inward looking. They're not evil to do what the Europeans did.
@aa3gunner Thanks its interesting what you are saying. I actually to a look at it. Unless whikipedia isn't accurate.... here a quote on the objective of Zheng He voyage. "Between 1405 and 1433, the Ming government sponsored seven naval expeditions. The Yongle emperor designed them to establish a Chinese PRESENCE, IMPOSE imperial CONTROL over trade, impress foreign peoples in the Indian Ocean basin and extend the empire's TRIBUTUARY system."
@aa3gunner I capped the words of the quotes of wikipedia. Which seems to suggest that China was very much so involved in others people business and acted as a bully on the neighboring country. They never invaded because they didn't need to. Everyone in the region was being racketed by the china. They were already in the sphere of influence. European invaded because they wanted to pull those countries into their own influence. Do you get it? You guys are the same. Comfirms what I said.
@aa3gunner I like to add also that. History is written from the eye of the victor. If you really believe what you think I can't change it. But I know from a fact that my country of origin for a great part of its history had alot of chinese colonist and immigrant to keep things in line with china. Myself share ancestors with southern chinese. The small country in question is Cambodia. And alot of us sees chinese and what they are doing as "evil" and "bad" even right this moment dude.
@omniouseye you are right for the most part. No country is perfect. BUT, when Zheng He met new people, he lavished them with gifts. He was letting people know about China's sovereignty. However, the middle east and central asia have been trading with China for centuries prior to Zheng He's arrival. Did the Chinese enter, massacre, steal, and enslave everyone like the Spaniards did to the Incas? Or the indigenous Filipinos? I think not. China was doing them a favor more than injury.
@aa3gunner well you are only focusing on that part of history. I pretty sure the first emperor of China Shi Huang Ti did some pretty nasty stuff to unite it. China was already a big player in the region, so didn't need to enslave. As for gift? what gift? Gimme your money, we will protect you or I attack you? This is was paying tribute means. Like the mafia. The Europeans were growing powers that competed against each other for supremacy. America conquest was part of it.
@aa3gunner China was already too big for its own good. Thats why throughout its history you had many wars and breakdown. Like the very popular story of the 3 kingdoms. They are no favors in life, there is always a catch. China would rather dominate the smaller country by scaring them than invade them. The Incas were easy targets because all the tribes back then were already in conflict. The spaniard only took advantage of it. British took advantage of the internal conflicts of india.
@aa3gunner and guess what? CHINA after Mao Tse Tung took advantage of the Vietnam War to weaponized the North Vietnamese and finance them in order to win against the south. Which the south was actually the legitimate government. Ho Chi Minh didn't have anything to start with. The Khmer Rouge in Cambodia was also finance by china, resulting in the massacre of millions of cambodians. I don't about you, but this sounds pretty bad. China as always been a master of proxy wars.
@aa3gunner I could write on and on about this. But I am going to stop. You should learn more about international history and the other country experience of china to get a bigger picture. Not just the history book of the of the CENSORED and biased one writtten by your own government to make China look good.
@omniouseye I don't agree with anything Communist China does since I hate Communism with a passion. However, nothing you say contradicts anything I've already said. CHina's history and achievements dwarf whatever the West has done without the enslavement and brutality the Europeans loved to inflict. Greece fell, Rome fell, the British empire fell, the Egyptians fell, but China stood tall despite many setbacks. Dynasties lasted for centuries. America is barely 200 yet it's falling.
@aa3gunner I come here to listen to good music.What the hell you guys are doing here ??? Talking about politics or nationalism. I am a chinese and I hate both. Come on, don't be childish and stop sucking your mother's milk for the rest of your life.
@omniouseye With 60 "treasure" ships, each the size of a football field, Admiral Zheng He's fleet was easily the largest, most powerful (relatively speaking) single-country armada ever assembled. I believe each fleet was manned with upwards of 65,000 imperial courtesans, diplomats, merchants, and sailors/soldiers. Equipped with advanced weaponry, the fleet could easily overpower any foreign resistance. But, its imperial mandate was to improve trade & extend good will.
@aa3gunner Haters and racist are everywhere...just ignore them...China after two centuries of suffering finally found the path of recovering and positioning itself as a leader of the world....History will tell the true.....I only wish that China will fight corruptions the money and greed bring to its society......

Is supposed to be a song dedicated to Argentina and its people, and here our primary language is Spanish .. so sing that song in another language, really takes away the meaning.

aside from her beautiful singing, why are people making a deal about her accent? she was majoring in English at this point, and I think she done a bloody good job :)
She's got a beautiful voice, and I think she interprets the song with understanding and emotion. Anybody who complains that she "has an accent" obviously doesn't pay attention to the fact that EVERY singer has an accent, whether singing in her own native language or in another language. Also, anybody singing this song who isn't Argentinian is inevitably singing it "with an accent." ;-)
@bohemianspiritmn: Though the musical Evita is supposed to be about Eva Peron, the lyrics and music is by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber both Englishmen. "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" has no connection to any Argentine lyricist or composer. It was meant to be sung in English albeit it has been sung in many languages. I agree with the rest of your comments.
@IX19UT8O - Yes, I know all that. I was just saying that if people are going to be picky, then every singer should be singing it in English with an Argentinian Spanish accent, because that is the nationality of the character. I was being a bit snarky, not meaning it to be taken too literally. ;-)
@bohemianspiritmn: The musical and therefore the song was written by Englishmen for an English audience. So it was meant to be sung in English without accent, Argentine or otherwise. Just because the main character is Argentine Eva Peron does not mean the song and therefore the entire musical should be done with a Spanish accent to make it acceptable. It would only make a mockery of the entire production and then most likely irritate the Argentines to say the least.
@IX19UT8O - Yes, as I said, I understand all that, on a literal level. As I said, I was indulging in a bit of humor. If you don't understand what I was getting at, no harm done. It's okay.
@bohemianspiritmn: If people are picky about this beautiful singer's English then the retort should be her English enunciation is excellent and most likely better than most of the picky people. Like I wrote in my respond to @bohemianspiritmn there are much too many American/English born people whose English is barely understandable. Too many, especially Americans, cannot construct a simple English sentence let alone speak the language properly. Look at the comments, these are your picky people.
I have to agree with the OP - what an amazing voice and what a beautiful girl. She's adorable, and her voice is astonishing. I don't even like this song, normally, but I could watch this video over and again.
Her accent is a lot better than 95% of China's population and it is hard to overcome a deep-rooted Chinese speaking culture. A stunning performance! Bravo!
@DumbHonkie1 The girl has a great voice! but what a foul mouth you have! Shame on you!!! Please refrain to use this kind of language. Show some education, please.
@mingmcv Hey asshole, my comment was directed at another shitbag. I didn't see you making indignant complaints against the morons who made snide remarks against this Chinese girl or China in general. Take your hypocricy,shove it up your stinking asshole, then come back and talk to me.
She is beautiful, and incredibly gifted! She speaks with a Chinese accent, but when she sings any song, she has absolutely no accent whatsoever - she has the unusual gift of duplicating EXACTLY what she hears, whether it is Northeastern USA, Southwestern USA, South American, or whatever language.
Those who commented about her accent are simply racists, peirod. I bet they would never complain about a French singer singing English. They would say the accent is cute. They would think it's natural for a British singer singing with British accent or a black singer with black accent. Even Celine Dion and Gloria Estafan sing with some peculiar accents, but nobody would say anything. They pick on Zhang simply because she's Chinese and China-bashing is fashionable in some parts of the world.
@fjsilver You have to get some brownie points by making a singing in a language/pronunciation so different from your own & still sound great. This woman deserves some brownie points.
@fjsilver That's possible, but you don't have any proof of it. On the other hand is also possible that you as a Chinese are new to the Western world music and customs and feel kind of a layperson, sort of inferior......that's why you label as racists those that just make a comment on her accent. BTW, China-bashing is as fashionable as America-bashing was for the last 60 yrs: its a matter of envy. Learn to live with it. Just for the record: I happen to like her singing and I'm from Argentina.
@Purrete You are assuming a lot about me but that only shows your ignorance. By the way, years ago I had a business trip to Cordoba for more than a week and there was also a short stay in Buenos Aires. I was really impressed by the beauty of the girls there. At the same time, when I was able to use U.S. dollars freely without needing to change my money to pesos and when I saw people waiting in long lines just to use pay phones, I couldn't help but feel a strong sense of superiority.
@thechinadesk I looked up her chinese songs, and I was blown away. What a talent. it was wonderful to see the sophistication and elegance of her delivery. Her voice is gorgeous. I also saw what is happening in the chinese music scene, and frankly it was quite jaw dropping. The songs already seem superior to whats happening in the French music industry.
Extracting the full potential of a song with foreign lyrics can be difficult. One has to make an extra effort to immerse oneself in the MEANING of the song.
Unless one does that, even if one's performance is letter perfect technically, it will still feel as if it's missing something. That's because it is. It's missing the FEELING.
It's generally easier to invest feeling in a song written in one's own language.
She should of had sang this in front of Simon Cowell!

IX19UT8O 4 months ago
@IX19UT8O - Yes, I know all that. I was just saying that if people are going to be picky, then every singer should be singing it in English with an Argentinian Spanish accent, because that is the nationality of the character. I was being a bit snarky, not meaning it to be taken too literally. ;-)
bohemianspiritmn 4 months ago
@bohemianspiritmn: The musical and therefore the song was written by Englishmen for an English audience. So it was meant to be sung in English without accent, Argentine or otherwise. Just because the main character is Argentine Eva Peron does not mean the song and therefore the entire musical should be done with a Spanish accent to make it acceptable. It would only make a mockery of the entire production and then most likely irritate the Argentines to say the least.
IX19UT8O 4 months ago
@IX19UT8O - Yes, as I said, I understand all that, on a literal level. As I said, I was indulging in a bit of humor. If you don't understand what I was getting at, no harm done. It's okay.
bohemianspiritmn 4 months ago
@bohemianspiritmn: OK, got you.
IX19UT8O 4 months ago
@bohemianspiritmn: If people are picky about this beautiful singer's English then the retort should be her English enunciation is excellent and most likely better than most of the picky people. Like I wrote in my respond to @bohemianspiritmn there are much too many American/English born people whose English is barely understandable. Too many, especially Americans, cannot construct a simple English sentence let alone speak the language properly. Look at the comments, these are your picky people.

They pick on Zhang simply because she's Chinese and China-bashing is fashionable in some parts of the world.
fjsilver 6 months ago 81
@fjsilver You have to get some brownie points by making a singing in a language/pronunciation so different from your own & still sound great. This woman deserves some brownie points.
purplepimpernel 3 months ago
@fjsilver So true!
azlee19 3 months ago
@fjsilver That's possible, but you don't have any proof of it. On the other hand is also possible that you as a Chinese are new to the Western world music and customs and feel kind of a layperson, sort of inferior......that's why you label as racists those that just make a comment on her accent. BTW, China-bashing is as fashionable as America-bashing was for the last 60 yrs: its a matter of envy. Learn to live with it. Just for the record: I happen to like her singing and I'm from Argentina.
Purrete 3 months ago
@Purrete You are assuming a lot about me but that only shows your ignorance. By the way, years ago I had a business trip to Cordoba for more than a week and there was also a short stay in Buenos Aires. I was really impressed by the beauty of the girls there. At the same time, when I was able to use U.S. dollars freely without needing to change my money to pesos and when I saw people waiting in long lines just to use pay phones, I couldn't help but feel a strong sense of superiority.

She does have a nice voice. But lacking in emotional gravitas. I would love to hear her sing in chinese.
tamarexxe 7 months ago
@tamarexxe
You have a point. Many technically proficient singers miss the boat when it comes to fully internalizing the meaning of the lyrics.
This can be overcome of course, but it requires first the awareness that one is missing something, and second, determination to fix the problem.
I hope she works on it. She has so much innate talent.
thechinadesk 7 months ago
@thechinadesk I looked up her chinese songs, and I was blown away. What a talent. it was wonderful to see the sophistication and elegance of her delivery. Her voice is gorgeous. I also saw what is happening in the chinese music scene, and frankly it was quite jaw dropping. The songs already seem superior to whats happening in the French music industry.
tamarexxe 7 months ago 3
@tamarexxe
