Oh Emmy !! you bring a tear to these old eyes, and I bless the ground you walk on for that alone. My heart sings and my spirit soars when I hear your voice. I dread the day you are taken from us, live long ,live long please !!!
I refuse to say OMG on principle as I'm far too old for that, so I'll just say Mon Dieu!;-) I'm stunned by this - how could I never have heard it before - it's AMAZING! Many thanks.
WHY would anyone think that Ms Harris was trying to compare herself to Edith Paif by voice and certaintly not by looks. She did the song as a tribute to the sad street waif Edith Piaf. She was quite a sad character but arose from the gutters she was born in. See her 4 part bio on youtube-
"As you leave / I can say / love was king / though for only a day / ... / One last kiss / one last sigh/ no regrets / as we will say goodbye." True love is a rare commodity. Even brief love affairs are precious. Savor them for as long as they last. And no regrets. Hard to find. Hard to hold. But, love is beautiful.
Superb. Magnificant. Breathtaking. As most readily appreciate, the greatest tribute the legendary Emmylou Harris can "deliver" when performing "Non, je ne regrette rien", the signature song of the legendary Edith Piaf, is to perferm "Non, je ne regrette rien" IN THE SIGNATURE STYLE of EMMYLOU HARRIS. Roadwarrior3 cannot thank chrislareau enough for posting this superb video clip on "Youtube."
@roadwarrior3 So bad the drums and too much orchestration! I prefer "plaisir d'amour/joy of love" version with just an accordion, a fiddle, three voices and basta!
Emmylou has an affinity for French songs, C'est la vie, La Cassine Special, J'ai fait tout and others. So this is no surprise... when was this recorded?
I don't see the comparison between Emmylou and Edith Piaf - they don't look at all alike, and their stories are more different than the same. Dissolving one pic into the other is a bit of a stretch, I think.
I'm sorry, Emmylou! I should have had more confidence in you!
I've loved Emmylou's singing since I first heard her back in the 60s or 70s, but she did much better than I expected on this tribute to the eternal "La Môme"

For some songs is it just better don't translate at all.

A classic with a touch of hillbilly. Harris's voice is too soft to carry this song.

My wife is French. She has the music of the average scalded crow and you should hear her butcher my language.

French with that 'english spoken' accent is HORRIBLE.

Elle chanterait mieux en anglais. Mais c'est de l'art aussi ! !
