That would be a perfect place to make horror movies.Yes I know there have been some made shooting there before, but really! What an opportunity to film in an East Coast ghost town !?
This is a very creepy place. An abandon town I have been to I went in one of the old homes. I heard footsteps all thorough out the place. And no one was there.
It was also a series of problems with political and red tape that suspended the ability to put the fire out in time. They would have lost 3 buildings instead they lost a whole town; money is truly the root of evil people. Occupy Wall Street and several l others brought Centralia up during a protest.
@killthetorment shamokin is an actual town near centralia. you can check out a map and see. shamokin is on route 125 and centralia's on route 61 in pennsylvania.
@CallanTalksalot Shamokin was named after a tribe of Natvies (the towns around their were built in the early 1800's). The reason why it says shamokin there is because there is no other towns around there, except for Shamokin. And If you say Centralia is Shamokin, then you are obviously a conspiracy theorist.
i saw this yesterday on tv , on discovery channel something about centralia . I Forgot the name , then i searched for abandoned towns and i found it , and i saw this video . Good job , this really helped me . :)
@HattieLovesCattie unfortunately, the fire is under the one corner of that cemetery and it's gated. there are 4 of them all together. I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could find some records of who's in the cemeteries.
@HattieLovesCattie I'm not sure what to tell you besides trying to contact the Centralia Historical Society or possibly Columbia County for the records. I wish I could help you out more, but since it's officially evacuated now it's harder to find these things out.
@CallanTalksalot Ok,thanks a lot.So this town is really empty now?I do remember seeing something on the news about it a few years ago.Did most of the last residents move to towns nearby?
@HattieLovesCattie Yeah, they evacuated it back in February. There were only five people left, including the elderly mayor. There was an article about it on Yahoo, but it isn't there anymore. Luckily I saved an excerpt of it.
"Centralia's final residents evacuated by state. Like Womer, resident John Lokitis Sr., 68, father of Lokitis Jr., was
polite but short. 'Why worry about it? When it comes, it comes. I don't
@CallanTalksalot You could probably find them on Google, their address etc.I don't live in Pa.but what is the biggest town in that area?I was in Pa. a month ago tho and only in Philly,Bethlehem and Hershey.I loved Hershey.
it was an old mine shaft, meaning it was dug out at a certain distance and then had access to oxygen. as the heat increases during the combustion process, it shifts the land due to the heat, causing openings called vents (you see smoke escaping there). these vents release gases such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide and some heavy metals. subsidence or crop falls are attributed to this too. they also allow oxygen to reach the already burning coal. hope that helped!
@Robfoxman what's tricky about coal veins is they aren't predictable as far as size and branching out. it's like a tree branch, basically, and they aren't able to be mapped out to see where every pocket of coal is. so whatever coal is underground there will burn until it's out of fuel, and there's no way of telling exactly when that will be. so until then, it'll keep smoldering underground.
@Robfoxmai i live nearby, in the coal region and under centralia is the mammoth vein witch is if u dont no were all the veins of coal in the area meet like a crossroad. some people say the vein is hundreds of feet thick and could not burn out for the next 100 years.
actually i read a article about it on yahoo today, and from what i read they could of stopped it back then for a few thousand dollars but they just ignored it and i believe they said in the 70s' it would cost them 600 million dollars to stop it and they thought it to be to much money
@luis07teran yeah that's what i read, too. they did attempt to dig out a trench a good distance away from the fire to try to stop its fuel source, but the fire caught up with them two weeks before the estimated finish date for that project. there were two other options, one was to pump water in, and the other was to pump an expanding foam in order to snuff it out. both ideas aren't 100% reliable and would be too expensive to risk it not working, so as far as i know they let it go as a result.
@luis07teran did you see the news about it today? they're evacuating the last five houses and bulldozing them. the mine follows a vein of coal and that is essentially what keeps the fire burning. it's too costly to try to stop it and it can easily burn for a few hundred years according to experts.
This was good. Informative and professionally delivered. Nice editing work. I was only interested in this town because it helped inspire Silent Hill, but this presentation was great.
You did an excellent job on this video. Great pacing, composition and feeling and facts on top of it. It's obvious you did your research unlike so many of these other Centralia videos that only seek to sensationalize the town's demise. Very good job !
