  • Rogers and Hammerstein

  • My wife is playing Nellie in a local production of SP.

  • Not many women today look as good as she does.

  • Oh my God, what a cutie.

  • I keep thinking of fallout

  • @THIRDSHOCKARMY I like this SO HARD

  • The girls in my chorus (Chamber) and the women's chorus at my school are singing this for our cabaret type show :)

  • Singing this for you, my darling Peter.

    Always. ♥

  • I love this song!!!!!

  • Just Brilliant!

  • Isn't this from Fallout 3?

  • @oReFLeXiioNz yesssss ! :DD

  • @oReFLeXiioNz .....unless Fallout 3 was out before 1958 when this Musical was made....then No. Fallout 3 was out in 2008 which means it simply 'used' famous songs. In no way is this masterpiece 'From' a post-apocalyptic game.

  • @CunningFoxxyKitten It's not just post-apocalyptic, it's also alternate reality, as it takes place in a world where history followed a slightly different path than our own. But, yes, the song is definitely not FROM Fallout 3, but rather was IN Fallout 3.

  • @oReFLeXiioNz your thinking of Tex Beneke's Version of the Song A Wonderful Guy its the same song just lyrics have been changed slightly

  • Dat ass.

  • THEY DONT WRITE SONGS IN MUSICALS LIKE THIS ANYMORE.

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER EAT YOUR HEART OUT.

  • great thighs

  • When I was younger, I never understoud this song, but that was when I wanted nothing to do with guys. But now I'm in love with a wonderful guy and I can't stop huming this song when ever I think of him.

  • I can see why Mitzi became a big star--you can't see anyone else in the role--even Mary Martin. Mitzi's voice is just so much better. And her sexy, yet innocent exuberent acting. I love her in every movie she's in.

  • These are classic Hammerstein verses--he was a lot like Nelly you know--the incurable optimist.

  • @windstorm1000 Interestingly, Richard Rodgers was reported to have been a borderline manic depressive. Rather incredible that his music was so superb. A talent that was a gift from God.

  • My late mother's all time favourite film.My dad bought her the album on vinyl when it was released in the UK,way back when,& she played it almost till the vinyl warped, lol. I recently saw the 'remake' with Glen Close & Harry Connick Jr,& whilst it was a worthy attempt,it just wasn't a patch on the original!

  • "I'm as corny as Kansas in August, I'm as normal as blueberry pie" Wonderful lyrics and melodies. R and H were geniuses..One of the best things about America. We are still humming their wonderful tunes.

  • @windstorm1000 You are NOT wrong. Hug and kisses to you. xxxxx

  • Did they really film this with an orange filter?? Its awful!! Only bad thing about this movie was the filters (but its a BIG bad thing)---was Josh Logan going through some of his, ahem, periods? Or was the cinematographer on acid?? R and H should have known better--they must have groaned seeing the final product. Mitzi, YOU are still great!! They couldn't put filters on the great songs, either.

  • is that her voice.

  • @issurchaim - yup

  • Brilliant photography in this film

  • This song all about for what I'm in love with wonderful guy !

  • How beautiful and honest she is in relationto the camera. so natural and beautiful.

  • @tenorismo I read a number of years ago that Oscar Hammerstein had made a comment that this scene was the best performance by any actress on any venue ever. After watching this video a few times I can understand why he said that. For my money I cannot think of any performance that would top this and as far as Mitzi Gaynor is concerned, She was never more beauriful than in this scene, and for the life of me I cannot think of any actress ever looking any better. Takes ones breath away!

  • it's too bad about the color tint. oh well

i saw this musical at the Ordway... good times, good times. :)

  • to be honest i only heard this hen i got fallout 3

  • @burningcynders

Damn spammers. Nobody needs to see "fallout 3" on every comment page.

Please do experience horrible painful death.

  • @EternalSearcher oh im sorry, for saying where i heard, one of the best songs in the world, and Please do stop getting annoyed about everything, You Cunt

  • This is the FIRST movie I ever saw in a movie theatre. Gaumont or ABC Cinema in Dundee, Scotland. I thought it was magical. Mitzi Gaynor- the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen in my life. Circa 1959!

  • Thanks for the info 10skylark & Sarcasmize,I read on IMDB that filming locations were Spain,Malaysia & Hawaii, so now I know Lumahai beach on Kauai , must visit one day!

    Thanks!

  • joeym 145 this was filmed on Lumahai Beach on Kaui, i've been several times down to this beach even a year after the tornado in 1992, the trees had been knocked down so the trail down was a bit more difficult, (correction: the island is spelled Kauai). It is not recommended to swim on this beach, the waves and currents are very strong, however a few do swim at their own risk. anyways, it is beautiful and not crowded, it rains a lot there, so go when it's sunny, don't lv it for another day!

  • Wonder where this beach is? anyone know?

  • @joeym145 hawaii

  • @joeym145 Lumahai Beach on island of Kauai, i last went in 1973, after tornado hit in '72, trees were down and was a bit more difficult to reach, it's less crowded & not recommended 4 swimming because of strong currents, it rains a lot up there on the island, so i strongly recommend go when it's sunny, don't leave it for another day! the weather changes dramatically & you don't want to be disappointed. Hope to go again one day if possible, it may be closed now as it's been awhile for me.

  • @joeym145 I made a mistake on my previous reply, it was 1993 and not 1973 when i went last time, however the first time i went was in the early 1970's when hardly anyone went to Kauai or any of the outer islands, Kauai had an airfield that was next to a pineapple field, the last year that pineapples were going to be grown and harvested commercially. When i went back in the '80s, i couldn't believe the big new airport that they'd built, i have special memories of Kauai when it was "unknown".

  • @Saintpistolwhip Nobody COULD do this better than Mitzi!

  • fallout 3

  • Kurt please sing this song on Glee. Please D:

  • @LavenderKittens hahahahahaha that'd be awesome

  • Bliss BBC2 UK showed both Oklahoma and South Pacific over last weekend. But what on earth did the director of South Pacific think he was doing by putting this yellow filter on during some of the big chorus numbers. Fifty two years on it looks plain silly.

  • I just watched South Pacific on tv. It was being performed at the Lincoln Center. I loved it!

  • Im sure they would cast someone like renee zelwiger or that other lady they always go with... or may Chenowith it would be interesting to know... but really it could never be as great as the original..

  • One of my favorite songs from South Pacific! Yeah, it is corny but that's the point...too bad certain critics here don't get it. Here these people are in the middle of a war seeing all manner of atrocity but yet she can still hold the hope of true love and have optimism in her heart? that's a beautiful thing!

  • one of the best movies i ever seen.mitzi.is wonderful lol

  • Pretty bad for the following reasons:

    1) The music at the beginning sounds just a tad overly dramatic and angry for the lyric, doesn't it?

    2) No song should ever use the word "bromidic" or the phrase "my little flat feet".

    3) As for the soundtrack, perhaps she should have stepped a little further back from the ocean so the waves wouldn't be so loud.

    4) What the hell is going on with the horrendous yellow tint and foggy out-of-focus edges to the picture? Blech!

  • @DFDalton1962

Yes, your lyric writing is better than Oscar Hammerstein!

  • @salmonroll Anyone can have an off day. Pity Oscar didn't go back later and improve it. But I wasn't born yet, so what could I do?

  • @DFDalton1962

    Haters gonna hate.

  • @runforthedoctor Did I mention that it looks like the film was soaked in a tub of pig urine before they developed it? Oh, and Doris Day would have sung it much better.

  • @DFDalton1962

    No. Just no.

  • @DFDalton1962 You r taking this movie 2 seriously, lol. It's entertainment but not for everyone. 2 bad about the colour tint but wassa matta w. Logan, he couldn't change it cos it prob wld cost 20th Century Fox a lot of $ & he'd never b hired again, c'mon Josh u had more clout than u think, just laziness,& now this wonderful movie has 2 b criticized that u didn't do anything at that time. Also, the movie was not a fave 4 a lot of critics as some1 posted, Gigi was a hit in 1958 & won awards.

  • @DFDalton1962 Also, no one sings "live" in the movies, they are all lipsynched, even the dialogues are if they're photographed outdoors, they do a remarkable job! So Mitzi didn't sing on the beach, but she had to go into the studio and sing like she'd been on the beach and to make it realistic, those strong waves had to "drown" her singing somewhat.

  • @DFDalton1962 in response to #1: she is supposed to singing it defiantly.

  • I feel guilty watching such an old, crazy, not real life movie. But I love it! 2 years ago I moved to live by the sea in South Africa. And find myself humming tunes from the movie when I walk on the beach each day.

Do I want to stomp on driftwood in my shorts, battered hat, singing at the top of my voice? Yes I do! So I just do it! (I look around first, this is a small town)

    Louisa

  • I love this song and the movie the way they are the actors are perfect and nobody could come close to them its like Gone With the Wind in that sence to me!

  • "You should see this movie as I saw it in Nairobi 1961. You wouldn't grumble about the color change. When I saw the cloudied yellow after the intermission, and??? You had to be there!"

  • Ah, you all only know this song because it's on Fallout xD

  • @grumpyman2 True that

  • I adore both this song and the musical. Save for one little line in here "No more a smart little girl with no heart, I have found me a wonderful guy." One cannot be intelligent and in love? I know, I know I'm taking it way too seriously. I'm just saying. Still adore this song. I was humming it at dinner all last night. Luckily, others joined in so it wasn't too odd. Even if other people at the restaurant thought we were crazy. Who cares!

  • @Blackthorne369 maybe the "smart little girl" part meant smart as in arse.. as in quick, witty and rude??! no?

  • @Blackthorne369 One could interpret the line "no more a smart little girl with no heart" as "smart in attitude" - meaning she was one to talk "smart" to people before she found that special guy, and the feeling of being in love mellowed her arrogance somewhat and made her no longer the "smart litle girl" she once was.

  • this song is fallout <3

  • My school is doing South Pacific next year and audition are on Tuesday. I have to sing a bit of this song. Hah, wish my luck.

  • @VampireLover132 You'll do great! Just channel your inner Mitzi! :o)

  • From an era when talent and vocal ability was the desired criteria for stardom. If this movie was made today this scene would be some off key, undulating stripper humping a pole. Which contemporary "Grammy Winner" am I referring to? Throw a rock into a crowd.

  • @rogerrodd

You mean Megan fox would be doing this part?

  • @agememnom Fortunately for me, I haven't a clue who Megan Fox is. I tuned out of contemporary TV, Film, and music quite some time ago. With a miniscule handful of exceptions, it's my refusal to co sign any of the crap that has been passing for art since the onslaught of MTV.

  • Mitzi in shorts. That works!

  • I like the original song better

  • Her voice is only bad in this version - try to find the movie recording.

    She's magnificent - I promise!

  • Does anyone have any good suggestions to audition for this musical?? Please get back to me! :) ASAP.

  • well done love

  • Love this song, I love all South Pacific songs, but can't stand this movie. I think we need a movie remake of this where everything isn't weird colors and oddly filmed.

  • I don;t want a remake, because this film and the performers are perfect, but I wonder if they could somehow process the film without the color effects. That would be perfect.

  • Sadly no - the filters were applied directly to the camera lens, and you can't extrapolate the colors.

  • This same scene can be seen without filters. Key in "South Pacific which version". It's a mystery where it came from.

  • @DAVIDSILVERCA I heard that they were going to attempt a remake of the movie and personally I don't think they should try. This attempt was rather perfect and a true classic. Just my opinion.

  • @Blackthorne369 a remake was already done. glen close played his part. and failed in my humble opinion. whatever it was done again sometime in the 1980's (?)

  • There is one...

  • and it SUCKS, nobody can replace Mitzi Gaynor

  • @Cypresswhisker2 Well, I have news for you! There was a re-make done in 90s/00s. I personally prefer the original, but the coloured gels are gone in that version. I first saw in a few years back, but I'm sure you'll find it.

  • I agree but honey, those "weird colors" one awards and are looked upon by professionals everywhere.

  • *Won

  • "MY all time favorite movie. I watched it in East Africa in 1960.. We all fell in love with with this Woman. But we never realised who she was. How could such a beauty invade our space without us knowing it. Then came the Movie! We all all just fell apart. She was just too much. Or not enough?..."

  • i like this play but my fav song from it is honey bun 101 lbs of fun !

  • If you people have nothing nice to say, why do you post thingss??

    loveit :)

  • I love this film! and Mitzi! Love Mitzi, ever since I saw her in Anything Goes! And I love this song... it really expresses how I'm feeling at this very moment... and for the past three weeks and 3 days... not that I'm counting... :)

  • Love it! It's on Galaxy News Radio in Fallout 3!

  • I know the feeling. :D

  • CLASSIC.

  • An old girlfriend of mine dedicated this song to me, this was way back in March, i still hum it whenever I think of her, it didn't work out because I couldn't tell her I loved her. What a prat I was, I wasn't sure how she felt about me, I can't believe I let her go.

  • TELL HER.

  • She is with someone that can make her happy now, so I don't think I could tell her, I'd rather her be happy, even if it wasn't with me.

  • you could at least tell her you're sorry? in case she ever wondered

  • @davidrosspollard call her!

  • @davidrosspollard Why can't you go back to her?

  • Just saw the play last night and it was sensational...had a richer, darker, deeper feeling than the film. BUT, it missed Mitzi, and the gorgeous beauty of Kaua'i, the other star of the movie.

  • LOVE this musical....hated the way that they put colored filmed on the camera everytime they went into a song.

    Terrible movie making idea!

  • wow! they really don't make em like this any more! I first saw on a huge screen in England in about 1959 and even at the tender age of 7 was impressed!

  • What happened to this kind of movie in our country????

  • Oh wow, I had forgotten how much I LOVED this movie!! I saw it when I was a young girl on the big screen. One of the great classics for sure!!

  • where is this song in fallout 3?

  • It's played on the radio stations in Fallout 3

  • Comment removed

  • if somene loves that song because fallout 3 or fallout 3 has caused them to understand how stupid some of the modern music is reply here

  • I hate most modern music that everybody likes nodays anyway, but Fallout 3 made me remember how great the classics are...now I love listening to this stuff all the time!

  • I loved classic music before Fallout 3 but I knew this song just from Fallout

  • Absolute classic!, makes goosepimples come everytime I hear this excellent song. Mitzi Gaynor at her best!

  • I am wanting to watch the movie can anyone post it on youtube please.

  • Great stereo sound. Hear that drum on your left speaker, the ocean waves, etc

  • I saw the "South Pacific" play in New York a few days ago at the Lincoln Center and it was beautiful, brilliant, and I was honestly speechless. I love the storyline and the music. The play was amazing and i'm sure the movie is great as well. I can't wait to see the movie. :) If anyone here is in NY I highly recommend you go and see it! :)

  • I saw it too. :D Absolutely beautiful masterpiece!! Set on the Lincoln center was extremely beautiful also.

  • Fallout 3 song:D

  • my friend was awesome at this part xD haha we were all messing around backstage when she was singing this song... fun times :')

  • fallout 3 song, i like it :-D

  • 3.:05-does she mean to say "with a wonderful..."mistake?

  • I don't think so. I think it was just part of the act--acting surprised when the other women joined in. I never thought about it before though...

  • no, it's part of the song. I checked in the script

  • My parents are taking me and the rest of the family to see this tomorrow, and since I'm a metal head, I'm probably going to die before intermission. Great voice though.

  • GNR ftw!! =D

  • as heard in fallout 3 galaxy news radio ;P

  • I love modern music, but always loved classics like this. It's an experience to see and hear it live on Broadway that TV or web streaming can't reproduce.

  • She's hot even in today's standards.

  • I'm in love, I'm in love

I'm in love, I'm in love

I'm in love with Mitzi Gaynor.

  • makes me cry, beautiful song, beautiful woman, check out the year,o.k.critics,write a better song, find a more sweet woman, get a better 'atmosphere' on cini film, this is LEGEND ,material, same as 'sound of music'

  • It looks like she has hepititis.

  • i know what your saying, everytime a song started up they would put really bad coloured tints and misty edges, why?

  • Mitzi has an interesting figure--she's extremely slim, but still somewhat curvaceous. She looks like a Varga girl come to life.

  • they only made them like that in the fifties.

  • Yeah, it was a sort of cultural thing of the times, mostly because of the pinup artists like Varga, Petty, and Gil Elvgren.

I'm not saying that should be the standard--I prefer women who are heavier--but it was an interesting look.

  • Hey, I'm an old guy! My dad liked musicals and took me to see South Pacific with Mary Martin at the Drury Lane Theater in London. Around 1953 I think, I was 9 and my dad bought the complete set of 78rpm records which I still have. Years later I saw the movie with Mitzie Gaynor.

  • This role was made for and originated by Mary Martin (Peter Pan). If you look up the song on wikipedia, it says: "Rodgers and Hammerstein were as inspired by Mary Martin's personality [...] to write this song. [...] Unusually, he did not use her native Texas, as he felt that the use of Kansas alliterated better with the k sound of the word corny. Mary Martin was so thrilled that when she sang it on stage, she performed cartwheels on the stage at every turn of "I'm in love.""

  • I'm doing this song for an audition lol. It's actually a very fun song XD

  • my choir is doing a broadway theme for our concert. i got alternate for this solo. i wanna be the actual person, but if she gets sick i get to sing it :)
