Yes you do need permission from the school principal otherwise it is trespassing and you can be charged. Please do the right thing and seek permission before entering school grounds.

YES - I always get permission to metal detect school grounds. Written permission as much as possible so that I carry that letter with me in case I get pulled up. Here in Queensland Australia, it is illegal to be on public school grounds after hours without permission from the principal.
