Awesome stuff, I personally think that it perhaps needs better regulation, as I could see some controversy being caused over inter-robot disputes...

I would build tall top heavy robots designed purely to fall and knock the other team over whilst their team mate tries to kick.

Is there a radio beacon in the ball? Object recognition is still very new and requires gobs of computational power - not sure if the small uprocessor brains of these bots have the crunching power for that.

Cameras recognize it.

Computing is onboard the robots.

NimbRo uses Intel 1.3GHz Core solo in Sony Vaio UX1XN.

TEam Osaka uses AMD GeodeLX 800.

haha so it's also an intel vs amd war! very nicely done - now I'm assuming you have emergence behaviors programmed? such as steering and flocking behaviors? do you also use a 3d spatial map to calculate vectors? this is all very interesting to me as i've done some pure simulation work and also have some understanding of electronics.

i think it had to do with the germans being a bigger than the japanese; i saw a few foul plays but i guess it's the japaneses' fault for building everything too compact. they should have known the krauts were going to go reich on their butt

I see some great improvements every year, but i don't think they would be ready to face a human team by 2050.

It would be better if the robots were connected to a team server to guide them, so that they can play a bit more like a team.

One of the players could carry a server for that purpose. And it's 42 years left, computing has come a long way since 1966 so I guess robots will too.
