  • Even if he did throw his stick, how can you award a goal if it never went in? If anything a re-shot.

  • I don't care how you look at that. No goal

  • he let go of his stick after the save was made, so ref shit the bed on this call, surprising that they would make such a call.

  • yea he did..im a goalie...u can see it come out of his had at 0:45

  • @pntballer010 i like it how you think your being a goalie makes your opinion any more listened to or correct :p

  • i rly dont see where the discrepancy is, its clear at :47 the stick is not in his control and the puck hits the stick FIRST, then hits his blocker. i cannot honestly say that it was intentionally thrown, but u have to see it from a refs perspective. his arm was going that way and the stick came out so u have to give them a break

  • @troyboy811 The stick was clearly still in his hand when he made the save, I'm also not even sure wether the puck hit the stick at all. This is a horrible call.

  • @SillyEagle1992 t doesn't matter if the puck hit the stick. Also, freeze at :33. See the little pointy think sticking out towards the end boards right above Smith's skate? The thing that's NOT in his hand? Right, well that sure as hell isn't "Clearly after the save was made." And this video quality is awful, so I encourage you to go to THIS video: watch?v=Luj89b4Spjg And freeze at :42. As here, the stick has left his hand before Hejduk has even shot the puck.

  • People's exhibit 1 on why the NHL is a second rate league.Quite clear the goalie makes the save then loses control of his stick which had no bearing on the shot/save.

  • that sucks that is what lost us the game!!!!

  • I watched this game. There was a close up of Mike Smith's hand and it showed that the stick did come out of his hand as Hejduk took the shot. Either way, it's history.

  • bullshit

  • that call is BS

  • the avs where gonna win anywayz

  • Officiating this season in the NHL has been horrible for almost all teams.

Also Bettman is killing the NHL. Someone do off with him.

  • wtf it should have been no goal he didnt throw his strick

  • Dropped, not thrown. NO GOAL!

  • You don't know how much the colorado news stations and sports channel flipped out about it they kept complaining for about a month afterwards

  • There's really no point in continuing to argue with you. We obviously just disagree, and thats ok!

Mike Smith also said "I mean, I know it's a fast game out there, but there are four refs on the ice — four, not one," an irate Smith said. "I made the save, and then I had to drop the stick because my stick was gonna come up in the air. .....The save was already made. It was after the fact that the stick went to the ice."

This is just not true. You know it, I know it, and so does Smith.

  • Fire those officials.

  • Your a moron...

  • "you're"

  • Four weeks ago, I wasn't in the habit of correctly typing in perfect grammar.

But if "you're" going to attempt to make an insult, at least add more than I did. Three words.

Good attempt, but put forth slightly more effort in your responses. Your comments longevity, symbolizes your true character.

  • no,it really doesn't.

Then you ramble on (way too deep) about how I'm wrong for correcting you and it shows I'm somehow flawed as a person.

    lol just take the correction,kid.

That's the only comment I saw from "Sickgamevideos",so I had nothing else to use.

  • Am I rambling, or over thinking? I believe I'm over thinking this situation, which isn't a bad thing.

But you only said one comment ("you're"), and I found a way to insult you.

It was a past mistake, so the correction isn't going to be ignored.

But your current knowledge, (spacing, and capitalization) is much weaker then my slight grammar mistake more then a month ago.

  • "is much weaker then"

    Should be "than"

    ;)

    Bravo *claps*

  • No capitalization in the beginning, no space added between "no,it", "lol", another space which was not added "the correction, kid", and once again ""Sickgamevideos",so I had nothing".

    Touche, *claps harder*.

  • So you're saying that my errors of spacing and capitalization (common problems due to typing fast) outweigh your errors of spelling?(your a moron, using then instead of than).

    HAHAHAHAHA

  • Great save by Raycroft

  • I'm an Avs fan, but more importantly, a hockey fan. What happened here was ludicrous. I think the Avalanche probably would have won this eventually in the Shootout. The rules should definitely be changed to reflect this type of situation. Now, if he threw his stick before the puck hit him, or at the puck, it should count as a goal. If there's such a discrepancy of "did he throw it before making the save" then just do a re-shoot.

  • On a play that can decide the game just have them reshoot.

They probably just wanted Colorado to feel good anyway because of the Turco shootout

  • Because of the Turco shootout? Yeah, ok....

There was no controversy at all there. I believe Smyth was the shooter or the Avs and it was clear that the only reason Turco lost his stick was because Smyth skated into it.

And if the refs were gonna try to make anyone 'feel good' I would suggest making TB feel good, since they are last overall in the NHL.

  • I agree that A reshoot should occur in situations like these not a goal if the puck isn't in net.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but there is no way the puck changes angles in mid air without hitting the stick. Goal cam shows a drastic angle change...off the stick..INTO the blocker.

how can anyone say the save was made BEFORE the stick drop? I'm not arguing that the stick wasn't "dropped" I know he didn't "throw" it. but Don't lie about it Smith saying you dropped it AFTER the save

  • Smith again said he did not throw his stick while making a sprawling blocker save. Drop it? Yes. But deliberately throw it, as the rule says must be done for the officials to award a goal? No.

"I'm not poke-checking or throwing my stick into his feet or at the puck," Smith said. "I stopped it. I didn't even stop it with my stick."

  • I think it looks like Smith just dropped his stick. He didn't throw it. Anyways, the save was made with his blocker, not his stick. This should have been either a save or a re-shot. Deffinetly not a goal in my opinion.

  • I have this game recorded in high def. If you pause and slow motion the video replay from the shooters left side, there is a CLEAR point where the puck is still on Hejduks blade, and Smiths stick is 6 inches away from his blocker hand, falling to the ice!

Also, if you watch the goal cam video, you see the puck change direction after it hits the falling stick, and deflects up into Smiths blocker.

I do hate that the game ended like this, but the refs made the right call according to the rules

  • You have misinterpreted the rule. He didn't throw the stick he accidently droped it which is perfectly legal. The droping of the stick had no effect on Hejducks shot. And the refs should be ashamed of themselves for the explanation they gave to rick tockett.

  • The dropping of the stick DID have an effect on Hejduks shot. The puck hit the falling stick, causing it to carom up into Smith's blocker.

I have the replay recorded, and the goal cam CLEARLY shows this happening. ALSO....Smith admitted that he dropped his stick on purpose, not on accident, to prevent the stick from flying up into the air. He also claims the stick never left his hand until he ALREADY made the save.. this is a lie. The stick was falling to the ice before the shot was ever taken.

  • I actually witnessed this event live and I have seen numerous replays and he does make the save before he drops his stick. It his the pad on his right arm. His stick in no way affects the shot. I have seen this same shot in slow motion and from every angle imaginable. The refs made the wrong call. It was actually a great save if the right call was made, and it wasn't. Smith was aware of the rule and wouldn't throw or intentionally drop his stick if he knew what the repercussions were.

  • I too witnessed the event live! And I'm looking at the replay from NHL on the FLY right now. I have the video paused, and am looking at the puck on hejduks stick. And the 6 inches of space between Smiths blocker hand and his goal stick.

Take a look at the goal cam view of the shot you can't tell me that the angle of the puck doesn't change when it gets even with smiths OBVIOUSLY FALLING stick BEFORE it hits his blocker.

Use your pause button, you'll see.

I am a Bolts fan but I'm not blind.

  • You can deduce nothing from the overhead video that they showed at the game....In that shot, there is no way to tell the stick was scuttled. However both other angles...from goalies right side, and goal cam, show that the stick was falling before the shot was released. Mike Smith, or anyone who says the save was made before the stick was dropped is either a liar, or has not seen these replays.

  • that is were your wrong, the stick never hit the puck it was a blocker save. They went through all of this on NHL Live this morning on the NHL network.

  • anybody who says smith made the save before he let the stick go must be watching a different video. the angle behind the net shows that he dropped his stick at almost the exact same time as hejduk shot. while the stick was out of his hand it was the first thing the puck hit, therefore that was the first save. its impossible to see if the puck would have gone in if it hadn't hit the stick as the blocker then made the save after the puck deflected off the the stick.

  • Great Call. He didn't throw his stick, he DROPPED it. You can't let go of your stick to make a save. Watch it very slowly my friends, the puck hits the knob of Smith's stick. Colorado 2-0 this season against The Bolts.

    Fuck Tampa Bay

  • You are a moron.

26.4 Infractions During the Course of a Penalty Shot - A goal will be awarded when a goalkeeper attempts to stop a penalty shot by throwing his stick or any other object at the player taking the shot or by deliberately dislodging the goal.

And I'm not even a Lightning fan, I just know a bad call when I see it.

  • you are an idiot. Goaltenders drop their sticks to make saves all the time. How do you think goalies end up cover up the puck with their blockers then DROP their stick which is perfectly legal.

  • I was at the game, horrible call, the officials talked it over for about 10 minutes and then awarded the goal to Colorado. These official should start being held accountable for their actions, like the NFL. Then maybe they would start getting the calls right when it starts hurting them in their wallets.

  • you can only reward a goal, you can't take another shot.

  • yes you can take another shot it happened two years ago when Detriot was in Dallas and Dallas took a shot on the shootout and it was deemed that Dominck Hasek threw his stick and the shooter shot again and scored.

  • Oooh, I forgot that this is what happened...I don't remember it happening that way. I do agree that another shot should have been awarded...and not a goal.

  • Um, no. The rulebook stats that if this happens during a penalty shot or shootout attempt, its a goal. Not another shot.

  • Oh yes. I agree they did what the rule calls for. I meant to say that I don't like the way that rule reads.

In my opinion, the rule should be changed to allow for another shot, NOT an automatic goal.

And i'm still unclear on what happened in the Wings/Stars game a few years ago. I remember watching it on NHL Center Ice...the game was over and goes off the air...then like 2 minutes later BOOM the game is back on again. The result was the same from what I remember though.

  • Letting go of and throwing your stick are quite different. It seems pretty clear to me he did not throw his stick. I agree that at worst it should have been a re-shot, not an automatic awarding of a goal.

  • I knw he didnt throw his stick but you have to know the refs cannot look at a replay like we can on tv therefore goalies must keep a grip on thier stick. they should not of given hedjuk the goal but instead give him a reshot. By the way i love how racroft makes the save and bats away the puck at the booing fans.

  • you're right, but they can't let him shoot again, only reward a goal. Clearly that's a blown call from replays and Smith made the blocker save BEFORE he dropped his stick. TB can't get a break. At 0:40 that replay clearly shows, he made the save before "throwing" his stick.
