The best way to see the statue is to take the Staten Island ferry. It's free and you get the best view of New York harbor possible. Though I can't bear it now that our towers are gone. It'll never be the same and I'll never be the same.

The copper that the statue is made of came from a mine in Norway and the structual framework ( that makes the statue stand in any wind ) was engineered by a Norwegian immigrant

It wasn't the snow and rain. It was the salt from the water of the sea, blowing up on it. Pour salt on copper every so often, and watch how it tarnishes.

Copper natuarally turns green when it is exposed to the elements over time. It forms a sort of protective coating and helps prevent it from oxidizing (rusting). The Statue of Liberty was about 12 years old in 1898 and most likely was already green...at least most of it...
