I have a beagle and she was one of the best dogs I've known. She doesn't bark unless she's playing with our boston terrier. She is a good guard dog and alerts us when there are strangers near our house. Unfortunately, it's the fact that beagles are forgiving and kind and that's why they are used as test dogs :(
I used to have a Beagle around seven years ago, who was a bit different. She didn’t quite have the physique and temperament of a typical Beagle. She was just a little taller, lighter, and had a little less loose skin. In my opinion, it made her look nicer. As far as temperament, she was quiet, not too interested in fallowing her nose, quite loyal, and highly trainable for a Beagle. But unfortunately, when I traveled back to California, my mom, who HATED dogs at that time, gave her up!
Beagles are the best! I don't know why they get such a bad rap. They're playful, friendly, and good with children. My beagle even plays with the cat! They CAN be stubborn, but with adequate training, regular excercise, and a lot of LOVE they are excellent companions!! The more Beagles, the better!
I really don't understand why people say Beagles are too energetic. The truth is that with regular amount of excercise you will have a sleeping Beagle for most of the day. My 3 year old female Beagle is a genious and for food these guys will do ANYTHING and so they are very trainable. They say you require extreme patiece but average patience is enough. Is you can take them for a walk twice a day and for a run twice a week they will be the BEST dog ever. Just like my Montserrat :D
I just got a Treeing Walker Hound and they're basically big beagles. Very stubborn and require extreme patience but also loving and social. They also respond better to positive reinforcement than some other dog breeds.
@HiveDes I also have a treeing Walker. You're right - big beagles! Like beagles you can get then to do anything with food. Most scent hounds are the ultimate "will work for food" dogs.
I've never seen a dog more convinced of his own magnificence than my beagle. He howls at thunder. Not because he's scared, but because he thinks it's missing something.
i dont know about other people but i think a beagles howl is so adorable:)
I have a beagle and i have had him for 4 yrs when we got him his previous owners abused him i was so sad when i found that out but he is doing better today exept he still gets frightened easily and he hates bald people lol BUT I STILL LOVE HIM TO DEATH!!!
I have a beagle (Manly) for the past 2 years. He was really easy to house break, and is very smart. He doesn't howl all the time, like I always read about them, but he does howl in his sleep a couple times a week. He is the sweetest dog I have ever had.
Grrr....I have a BeaglexJack Russell Terrier mix...he is the worst minding dog...ever. Well...not really. He sits when you tell him, and does all of the vocal commands well...but....he takes off a lot. And...when he's too busy following a scent, he won't come, at all.
we have a beagle, but she isn't quite as advertised..lol..she doesn't like strangers....at all..but she was a very good guard dog when i was growing up..and yes, she loves to sniff
I babysat a female Beagle once. Trying to take her for a walk was hell! Not because she pulled or anything, but she yelped the ENTIRE TIME as she smelt the sidewalk. People came out of their houses thinking I was beating her or something when in reality all she was doing was looking for a rodent or something.
i own a beagle and his grandfather was a pedagrie dog (sorry for mispelling of pedagrie) does this mean he is too im confused and also i love him he is a kind dog a keen sence of smell and is a family guardian
A pedigree dog means it's a pure breed, not a mutt. So, if your dog's grandparents and parents were all the same breed, your dog is also a pedigree. :)
My friend has a beagle called sherry and she looks like a teddy bear and everyone stops to pet her when we are walking her. She is really stubborn and doesnt play mutch but i think that is because they got her from a person who had a lot of hounds and used them for hunting. she isnt house trained properly yet since she was kept outside but apart from tht she is a really good pet lol.
I love beagles!! They are so lovable and really know how to use their eyes to get to your heart! My beagle wasn't hard to potty train and he never chews shoes or anything. He loves children. They can do anything to him and he never responds negatively. He goes outside to do his business, but would rather be with his humans where ever they are.
When I was a kid I was scared of my grand-ma's Beagle/Jack Russel Terrier mix, now we love each other so much, she sits her head on my leg and makes me pet her, she even leaves her beloved pet bed so I can pet her!
I love beagles! They are so much fun but they're HYPER. I definitely would not recommend getting one if you don't have a lot of room for him to run around.
my dog Marcus is a beagle/german shepard mix. hes got the size and black saddle of a shepard but the white chest, tail tip and socks like a beagle. And his face is SUCH a beagle face. he's the sweetest dog in the world! but, my lord is his bark loud! its like a beagles bark in bass form lol
My Beagle, Louie, Atually chewed through a metal dog door because he wanted to get in the house SO BAD!!!!I wanted to let him in but my dad wouldn't let me because we had visitors.
I have a beagle and I have to say that the only thing that I dont like about what she does is that every time we let her off lease she takes off, but she only follows scent trails but has never caught anything thank god. I have a rabbit and they got along fine from the start.
I have three beagles, Daisy, Shorty and Hemi. They're all SPCA rescues. Shorty taught Hemi how to track scents, and when they get one... All hell breaks loose. They sniff and howl. Shorty has caught three rabbits in our yard. I wish he wouldn't, but that's what beagles were bred for.
My Beagle (Busby) is great, He's about 7 months now and as most of you have commented he can do pretty much most tricks except come when he is called. I have tried giving him a treat every time I call him but if he doesn't want to come he wont! He is a little menace when it comes to chewing things too, Just last week he ruined my BBQ cover and has taken to pulling his bedding out of his box and ripping it in the garden. He's had more new beds than ME! Although he is still young.
I breed Beagles. All the things people say about them being untrainable or not being able to go off leash is bullshit. It takes the training, the time and the consistency, same with any other breed. If one training technique doesn't work, broaden your horizens with others. They're a very good dog if trained properly. My dogs are constantly off leash and paying more attention to my commands then to their nose. I give them jobs to do. Hunting breeds need brain stimulation.
hard to contain too, these dogs will dig under fences in a matter of a few minutes. I have a beagle/shepard mix and she loves kids. She just contracted parvo, and I almost lost her, but she is now back to normal 2 weeks later and her ole rambunctious self.
beagles are hunting dogs their natural instincts are to scent out the prey the reason they take off is they are hunting. i have 12 beagles and use them for fox hunting and they will return to me if i call them..
Beagles are so friendly. Mine, Daisy, is easy to teach tricks to, but coming when called... NOT. She will in the house, or in the backyard, sure. But accidentally let her out, might as well kiss her goodbye for a few hours!
Yeah Dolphinsmaniac, actually my Daisy is 8 years old now and will still escape if she can... but she has just started going 'round the corner right to the front porch, sitting there until someone opens the door. Too lazy to run all the way across town these days!
My cousins owned 2 beagles but they never did anything with them other than putting them in an outside cage which was too tiny for them. They would all yell at them for barking, and I constantly tried to tell them that they need to have activity. Sigh... some people just shouldn't be owners.
@Zenirixwolf That's too bad. Our beagle was truly part of the family. He got the lazy boy before my husband!! He lived to be 16 years old. I miss him terribly.....
anyone who wants to know more or ever thought of owning a Beagle can also check out the book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Beagles". it includes tried-and-true tips on effective training techniques and lots of other useful information from grooming and diet tips to vaccinations and emergency health care.

@ralphyization i have the same story though he was lost for 2 days where i live is all mountians so we have a lot of cyotes (sorry for mispell) and he was crying when we found him he was scared and he dosen't leave the hill where we live
@masterchiefjoe 2 days!! OMG! I used to tie him up to the clothesline at home though, unless we were outside with him. Beagles are possibly the cutest dogs on the planet. They do require a bit of extra love and attention though and if you are looking for a dog you can train - you might want to look elsewhere.
