Awesome vid , but i still cant understand why he dosnt wear glasses , man i shot of flake and thats it, ive had a piece of obsidianin my eye , ive also hit a piece of chert and a small piece shot up and stuck in my cheek.
Many instructors give goggles to their students because of their concern for safe practice (and liability), but do not themselves regularly use goggles. The reason that they do not get flakes in their eyes is that they are flaking down and away. It is hard to imagine how a proper stroke could create a flake that comes back at you. [Of course, the knapper sitting next to you may really nail you!] If you pressureflake up as well as down, you are definately in danger. Ishi did that.
@EatonCharles ya i seen that he had his face 10 inches away with that punch , hitting it towards himself , i dont know i guess personally i would wear thenm no matter what , like i said 1 wrong hit could shoot off a piece and hit you in the eye , and thats not a risk im willing to take lol
Wow awesome - I've never seen DC knap. What an interesting guy, and expert too. I own a couple of daggers made by Mike Stafford, who studied with DC. Incredible to behold.
where can i get stone like this? i'm all over knapping of any tool. i love the old crafts. i'm Cherokee and my motto is "remember the old ways." all i can get now is scrap glass. i really want to work with stone. where can i buy cheap stone in alabama? this video is awesome. i love the precision and the techniques being shown. very nice work. thx for posting it.
DC I had the pleasure of meeting you many years ago at a Knapp-in in George Town TX put on by the Retired Sergeant Major's Association. You were making a dagger at the time and had quite a crowd around you. We both seem to be a little grayer than we were 20+ years ago. You showed me a casting of an Egyptian blade that had some of the finest parallel flaking Ive ever seen. Some of the finest knappers in the country attended that event but you sir took top honors.
D.C. first i'd like to tell you that i greatly admire your work. i have a question , when did the europeans start heat treating ? i could try to look it up but i would save alot of time just asking an authority....you!i assume that the danish dagger was not?or was it?
Smart move. I bought my DVD as soon as it came out. Been waiting for 4 years on this one since I talked to DC when I bought a type III dagger from him. Make a demo of "Beyond Smashing and Bashing."
