YES! I remember watching it on t.v. live. (I.T.V.). Woah and when Mickey Thomas scored... Well, enough said, really! P.S. I didn't think we were going to do it!
Considering the finish to the season that this was, the radio commentator doesn't actually sound that excited. Perhaps I'm too used to youtube clips of South American commentators screaming for 20 minutes after a goal in the 10th minute though. :D
Well, Peter Jones was very much a commentator of another era (compare this to the Capital Gold version) and his style can sound overtly understated and gentlemanly compared to what we're used to now. Still an absolute broadcasting legend, though.
You fucking brain dead moron! Kill yourself - you are utter scum! Do you actually know what happened that season you pond life?? Kill yourself, you don't deserve to live you utter, utter filth!!!!!
@qatopboy Are you talking to me dude? You might want to dial back the mock outrage there, champ. "what happened that season" has little bearing on this discussion as the commentator clearly saw fit to take the job of commentating. So yeah, keep the wildly out of date over-reactions to yourself.
never heard this before, always think of brian moore and the way his voice changes as he says "thomas bursting through the midfield". it was up for grabs and we took it in their own back yard. glorious
Don´t think so. That was in april 1989 and he died a year later while commentating on the Boat Race. He fell ill and was taken to hospital but he unfortunately died. What a pleasure to listen to him during football matches.
I know it was a year later, but in a Five Live programme in tribute to Jones some years afterwards, Alan Green (who was with him at Hillsborough and also at this game) suggested very strongly that the traumatic experience of seeing the disaster had affected Jones very badly and that, in his opinion, Jones had never really recovered and it may well have contributed to his death. You can say "yeah, well, Alan Green", which I normally would, but I can well believe it.
Yeah, I suppose. Makes sense, but you'd think people in that situation shouldn't have been working. It was just reminiscent of those mega old clips, where you'd see Bobby Charlton skinning a couple of guys then launching a rocket into the top bag from like 30 yards and the guy would be like "Good goal there, from that chap".
I remember just before we got the winning goal, I ran upstairs to my bedroom because I couldn't bear to watch. I turned on the radio though and Peter Jones was accusing Perry Groves of being a diver! Perish the thought!
Couldn't agree more. I grew up listening to him on the old 'Sport on Two'. Sadly died the year after this broadcast when he still had plenty to offer.
get alan green on that mic, now that would be commentary

Radio 5's pretty good but the commentary on Radio 2 was great. 1000x better than the awful Talksport.

I prefer this type of commentary compared to todays shite. Everyone seems to be trying to sell something that's not there. You get me.

Mad that it's already 21 years ago. Doesn't seem anything like it.
I'm a Liverpool fan but Arsenal were brilliant, so hats off to them.

He described things with the most accurate words so you could perfectly imagining what´s going on. Inimitable and unique.

@ViscaBarcaInter Not excited? His Welsh accent reappears (which was no small thing in BBC radio in those days)!

Brother Mickey Thomas, you did the Gooners proud .
You didn't give up when you met Alan Smith's pass ball and you just fooled Liverpool.
Brother Mickey is an unson hero of the North Bank at Highbury.

First time I have heard the radio commentary. Nice one.
Proud to say I was at the game and still have my ticket stub (framed) to prove it!
Up the Gunners!

They say that Peter Jones' untimely death may have been triggered off by the stress of having to commentate on the Hillsbrough disaster :(

Yeah, I've heard his commentary of Hillsborough and you can hear the trauma in his voice.
Amazingly, this is the first time I've ever heard the radio commentary of Anfield 89, Jones does the event credit with the simplicity of his words.
