@greendragon2002 I don't think it is an exageration. Those ratios were the norm during fighting in Vietnam when encountering larger numbers of NVA. They didn't care how many of theirs died.

@jonewer and @airsoftking- it was basically drawing a line in the sand (the DMZ between North and South) and saying to the Communists "enough is enough" or we (USA and allies) will fight! but the North Vietnamese Army supplied the Viet Kong gorillas by using elborate tunnel systems through Laos and Cambodia to the west along the Ho Chih Minh trail. Some tunnels were deep enough to not totally collapse even under a B-52 bombing. This is why the enemy always managed to slip away after a firefight.

@f1471in3r It's true but it is very hard to adapt to an environment you aren't familiar with, the US doesn't have any jungles like Vietnam and they were unprepared for jungle warfare, especially psychologically. It's true that anyone, especially from elite units around the world like SAS, Green Berets, Delta, Spetznaz or the LRRPs can get used to jungle warfare, however, they are few while the NVA and Charlie practically lived in the jungle all their lives, and were used to jungle warfare.

I'm no expert on the Vietnam war BUT it seems to me Westmoreland never fully realized the VC were fighting a guerella war WHILE he and America were trying to fight a traditional war such as WW2. I have read that Westmoreland was always looking for a 'line' but in a guerella war there is no line. The taliban fighters in afghanistan are fighting exactly like the VC in Vietnam....basically hit and run and you eventually wear down your enemey.

I heard story about VietCong soldier matching forward under the bombing carpets to attack, use their body as shield for their comrades, fighting for days with a stomach cut open and gut pulled out. I don't know about the leaders but soldiers like that can't be fucked up evil. If American soldiers were like that they would definitely be branded as greatest war hero.

@jonewer and @airsoftking- it was basically drawing a line in the sand (the DMZ between North and South) and saying to the Communists "enough is enough" or we (USA and allies) will fight! but the North Vietnamese Army supplied the Viet Kong gorillas by using elborate tunnel systems through Laos and Cambodia to the west along the Ho Chih Minh trail. Some tunnels were deep enough to not totally collapse even under a B-52 bombing. This is why the enemy always managed to slip away after a firefight.

The media (Walter Cronkite being the ring leader) lost the war, along with two consecutive generals that didn't properly utilise the tools at hand, the second of which did not even like the special forces, much less try to use them effectively or otherwise. To say the US army can't "war in the jungle" is just ignorant.

The reporter asks, "THE best?" and the Marine replies, "Yes. I wish I had a hundred of them."

@f1471in3r It's true but it is very hard to adapt to an environment you aren't familiar with, the US doesn't have any jungles like Vietnam and they were unprepared for jungle warfare, especially psychologically. It's true that anyone, especially from elite units around the world like SAS, Green Berets, Delta, Spetznaz or the LRRPs can get used to jungle warfare, however, they are few while the NVA and Charlie practically lived in the jungle all their lives, and were used to jungle warfare.

I'm no expert on the Vietnam war BUT it seems to me Westmoreland never fully realized the VC were fighting a guerella war WHILE he and America were trying to fight a traditional war such as WW2. I have read that Westmoreland was always looking for a 'line' but in a guerella war there is no line. The taliban fighters in afghanistan are fighting exactly like the VC in Vietnam....basically hit and run and you eventually wear down your enemey.

Most of Americans don't wanna accept a fact that the US Army lost plenty of major battles in vietnam war such as battle of July Two, battle of Lang Vei, battle of A Shau valley ( 2 times), battle of Ong thanh, Operation Linebacker II, Lam Son 971.....
They only do believe in what flashing in their eyes by US propaganda and Hollywood movies

@baberaider18....Most Vietnamese who were viet cong looked towards northern communist rule for weapons and influence...Not all of vietnam wanted communist influence but it definitley was present From China and U.s.s.R/Russia
