as a vocal percussionist who's performed with 6 a cappella groups...beat boxing falls under the catagory of vocal percussion. Not entirely sure what you're issue with the use of a microphone is. A microphone is merely a tool. In some instances it is a matter of sound amplifications, and in others it is a tool that used in a master of VP can alter the sound of the sounds they make to create the desired effect. It's all a part of the trade really.
