@20meerkat Definitely true. I describe the Dr#4 / SJS relationship as "Know-it-all big brother and feisty kid sister". They are very close to each other like intimate family, but no romance. It was similar with the Dr#3 /SJS relationship, but more like father/daughter. The SJS era of Classic WHO is definitely a special time in DW history, well worth watching.
The first DW I ever saw on American PBS in the late 70's was Terror of the Zygons. I was instantly hooked and pulled into DW! I lost interest around the time Lalla Ward became Romana 2. During reruns, I managed to catch all of Season 12, 13 and 14. It was while watching Deadly Assassin that it hit me that it was Sarah Jane who brought so much heart to DW. To this very day I still have trouble watching Deadly Assassin because I miss Sarah so much! She somehow made that DW era special.
In Season 14, Sarah's advice helps the Dr explain Mandragora energy to Renaissance Italians in Masque/Mandragora; In Hand/Fear Sarah will not let the Dr face an unknown alien threat by himself, and goes with him against his protests.
Sarah's history proves she is the Dr's most competent, resourceful, capable & dependable companion, hands down.
Small wonder the Dr handed the sonic screwdriver to Sarah instead of Rose, in School Reunion!
In Time Warrior Sarah sets up the alliance so the Dr can defeat the Sontaran threat; in Invasion/Dinosaurs, she figures out who's behind the situation, plus she figures out the "spaceship" fake and unravels it on her own; in Death/Daleks she fools the Daleks into carrying away worthless sand; in Monster of Peladon, she takes charge of the imprisoned Dr's plan and moves it forward on her own; in Planet/Spiders, her investigation points out the problem to the Dr; That's only in her 1st season!
In her 2nd Season Season 12, Sarah's investigation in Robot leads everyone to the culprits; she figures where to get power and pulls the cable herself in Ark/Space to defeat the Wirrn; she ID's the Sontaran threat and recues the Dr in Sontaran Experiment; Her argument eventually convinces the Dr to destroy the Dalek embryos in Genesis/Daleks; her return alone to Nerva is key in helping the Dr defeat the Cybermen in Revenge/Cybermen.
In Season 13, Sarah's investigation, keen observations and independent explorations are key in Terror/Zygons; Her risking her own life, refusing to give up the Dr as dead is key in Planet/Evil; Without Sarah's aid in Pyramids/Mars the Dr could not have defeated Sutekh; Sarah's investigative knowledge and skill are key in Android Invasion; the Dr would not have survived without Sarah's help in Brain/Morbius; Sarah is key to the Dr & they are an unbeatable team in Seeds/Doom.
This is the doctor who I remember when I was younger at that time he only came on a uhf channel sat morning. sarah jane played the best part with him in my opinion.thanks for posting.
Sarah is always going to be my favorite companion. No matter what Doctor she is with. And as my mum put it when watching School Reunion, "Forget the new girlfriend, the true love is back!" =D
This is a really cute video. I love how at 1:56 his scarf gets caught on a bramble or something, I love it because that scarf never seemed to get in the Doctor's way. Imagine how dirty that thing is, being dragged all over the universe...
@gialla111 Don't forget, the 4th Doctor possessed "Scradar" - a special sense that he had that Tom Baker didn't which kept him from tripping on the scarf.... ;-)
Oh, this is so sweet. I always loved Sarah and Doctor #4 together. I definitely think they had strong feelings for each other. I think he loved her more than any other assistant he ever had. Great video! The song is perfect.
@strellasmith777 I still think that Sarah was the only one that the Doctor actually came out and called her "my best friend." (a bit of dialogue in Seeds of Doom). So far, I don't think any of the others came close, though Donna certainly helped keep the old man humble.
@BenjyHenryHoward Narrowly, whoever the Doctor is properly traveling with is his "best friend", at that time, but in the broader view, Sarah Jane is the companion who has had the longest connection with the Doctor over time, rivaling the Brigadier at present, and likely to exceed him in the future. She's still pretty much the Definitive Companion, the gold standard to which most all others are compared...
@tideoftime Oh, I'm not disputing that Sarah Jane was the greatest. But a person (even a Time Lord) can have more than one best friend in their life, especially a life as long as the Doctor's. He's only ever called four people in the series "best friend". Sarah Jane, K9, Donna, and that Malcolm guy in "Planet of the Dead" (though that one probably wasn't so serious.) Besides, Donna wasn't even his companion at the time when he said it about her.
@BenjyHenryHoward I was just saying, that's all -- he's certainly been very close to a number of people over the years, and he must have felt particularly bad concerning Donna, much moreso than almost anyone else (contextually, perhaps only Tegan comes close, as her departure wasn't even in pursuit of something personally fulfilling and/or needed, a la' Nyssa, et al, but rather from being so emotionally unraveled that she just couldn't take it anymore). But, yeah, I wasn't disagreeing, as such.
FINALLY! Everything i have seen of Sarah Jane fan made vids are saying that they were all lovey-dovey, THEY WERN'T ! They were very good friends

When eccleson hugs sarah its identical to the hug tom baker gave her in Genesis of the Daleks. Grabbing the middle, lifting her off her feet.
