What an arrogant 'social science' sell out. Make a bunch of labels, come up with a 'creative class' which is essentially the elite class by your definition (everyone from engineers to bankers and managers to teachers doctors and lawyers), make palatable for policy makers and you'll make money. Gentrification is all about lattes, cool restos and flipping a house in a couple years to this guy. This guy is a joke.
@akufemilia I did. It's a decent talk on the creativity as a source of economic growth for locations rather than companies, with a focus on historical perspective. Creativity comes from people, make them come to your place, or go there yourself, - that is roughly what he delivers.
All the companies he named produce sh*t products and are only there due to right place at right time.
They created an un-deserved institution in IT that is only succseful becuase of that very institution that was instilled in acedemia.
Go play around with Oracle Business Objects with DB2, then MS SQL Reporting Services and come see me after on which is a far, far, FAR, FAAAR superior product.
Wow.. listen to the psedue techical guy talking about stuff he doesn't have experience with.
@ntiego I read his book too, it's well packaged half-truths. Check out Dr. Jamie Peck at UBC et al. First the "creative class" is not as mobile as he claims, they just as mobile as any other group of people. Also economic growth cannot be attributed to the creative class, studies have been done with Floridas own indices and there has been no correlation found.
The main problem I have with Mr. Florida is his marketing of urban policies which do nothing good for the economy.
rich florida is light interesting reading, but there aint no creative types vis a vis the food services biz west of the mississippi in the so called heartland, the food is crap short order cutesy marketing slopshoots and the usual fast food swills, tasty food mom and pops are nearly nonexistentent, as compared to the east of miss. which are known as stands, driveins, spoons etc,but take pride intheir chow.
If I listen to this later he'll definitely put me to sleep. This guy is an imposter.

That's why it's called the creative class. It wouldn't be called such for nothing.
