I live a block off of U Street. It has seen a lot of good and bad times. These days it is one of the best places in DC to live. Great location, diverse, peaceful, interesting and very walkable. I would live no other place.
formerly 13th & Harvard and 14th & longfellow since 2000.
Not that gentrifiication has made the city cooler, on the whole and not a "shit hole" anymore -- I don't hear gunshots, see crack heads' kids sleeping in the front lawn, or Columbia Heights looking like a bomb hit it.
@crock703 maryland private school people piss me off. actually the people in general. hate it when they say they from dc when they from bethesda and shit
@sheba1959 It took 40 years to RECOVER from the riots because this was the hub of the black middle class in DC. After the riots hit, they left. It created a vacuum that left behind the poorest in a devastated neighborhood. 200+ buildings were destroyed. U Street was burnt down. Nobody wanted to live here. But citylife became attractive again to those that were fed up with traffic and suburban life. U Street got a Metro stop and it was a cheaper alternative. Come visit!

I work on Pa Ave and live on MacArthur Blvd. Been here since 1977...I've seen and heard plenty. There are still crackheads here.
