for people with pets that have dark nails, I watched a video, where if you're not sure how much to take off, what you do is gently squeeze where you may want to cut, BUT dont cut, just a gentle, but firm squeeze and if the animal pulls back, it's to close,to the quick, so move back a little, if the animal doesn't pull back, you've got the right spot, and clip., my girls are getting shorter now, as I was afraid so only cut little bits off, now I'm fine,and know where and how far to cut :-)
