Petrucci is definately a monster player but showing the shapes and playing them slow and then fast doesnt really help much the beginners in order to learn how to sweep.They need to learn the mechanics of the movement...the pick and drop to the next string for the right hand and how to fret with the left one in order to hear clear notes that are muted effectively.You can find all the shapes you want but if you still dont have the sweeping motion down its no use.

its ok when you are blessed with fingers as long as petrucci.. same as gilbert and holdsworth.. i was introduced to holdsworth a few years ago and his fingers were as long as petrucci's if not longer..... i have known john etheridge for quite some time now and his fingers are very long.. seems it is a real advantage..

Ive been obsessed with finger length lately (its kinda funny actually) because ive been having a hard time making some stretches and catching onto sweeping. But if you look at Josh Middleton, you can see he has about average sized fingers and he makes some pretty big stretches and sweeps so perfectly and accurately, its insane. @johnie102 im not too adept at sweeping, but i do know that many guitar players will "grab" onto strings with their pinkie (ex. Dave Mustaine) just out of habit, so it may just be a habit thing.

@johnie102 he is placing his pinky on a spot below the string to keep place, its a habbit thing to keep his hand in place. As a beginner he probably used that trick to get his alternate picking down or something then it just became a habbit
