My grandfather, Lt. William Miller, was a pilot in this squadron and of this plane and can be seen emerging from the bomb bay (in the black ball cap) in 2:37 through 2:49. This is the plane he was in which he went on to receive the Navy Cross.
@Author109 Yes, especially since I never had the pleasure of meeting him. He died when I was very young, yet it's videos such as this that offer a sample of the history of his life and the contribution he made to the freedoms we continue to share. I write this as I lie in a hospital bed in the VA Medical Center San Diego, sharing the room with others comparable to his age. It allows me the opportunity to learn about the mindset of those and the times in which my grandfather lived and fought.
My grandfather flew as Navigator in a B-24 in the Air Force and on his 3rd mission got shot down behind enemy lines in Yugoslavia and was announced missing in action. He survived 2 weeks of walking and made it back by an underground railroad towards Italy
My father flew in a Navy Liberator, a PB4Y. His plane was shot down in Jan. '45 above Borneo. The men got into the jungles . They divided up and some were rescued but my father's group was killed. Recently I have found out more information. This site is wonderful. It gives us an idea what it was like on the plane and even to see the Liberator, itself, and this WW II footage is wonderful. Thank you for your time in doing this. It is a tremendous gift to us whose fathers flew on them.
My grandfather, Albert Trumbly, was a radio operator on a B24 that flew over the Ploesti Oilfield raids. They were shot down and he was a P.O.W. until Patton's Army liberated them. He is still living, but in ill health, so if anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask me.
I have my father's Flight Log book. He was in VPB 116 and actually flew on this plane in Feb. 1945, I think 4 times. He was an AMM/2 and was a mechanic and waist gunner.
His name was Robert W. Carey. He was a waist gunner. I won't be able to attend the reunion as I'll be in Calfornia participating in a WWII documentary.

My father, Wallace Parmer AO3, was a nose/waist/belly gunner in VB-106. Thank you for this view into a piece of his life.

Great to hear from you. VB-106 was one of the best PB4Y-1 squadrons of WWII.
