I saw this last night; ten times better than I thought it would be. The subject matter was daring for 1955 (interracial love, adultery, prejudice, coping with being biracial) but that sort of thing is nothing big now. Jones gives an amazingly compelling performance. It's funny, but I saw "The Shanghai Gesture" not long before this and it had a Eurasian who was treated as something unclean. And now we don't blink at the idea. We have come a long way.
Bill Holden was excellent in this movie so was he in other movie such as Picnic
I was Hotel Bali Beach Inter.Continental's FO Reception when he checked in to this hotel within 1970 and stayed for few days.He visited Bali as a tourist. We the hotel staff were so happy to meet him and talked to him personally and he was friendly.
Glad to be able to capture again this classic movie since mine has been unplayable. Thanks for uploading. Agung, Bali, Indonesia
William Holden & Audrey Hopburn were going to get married but she only turned him down after she found out he had vasectomy. She wanted to have children in her marriage. He was already married but separated. I read this in his autobiography.
this was mine and my mom's favorite movie 3 years ago my mom passed away a few days before she paseed away we watched this movie together i cried so hard because of the movie and because i knew mom was notgoing to be with us much longer i will always remember hugging her and watching this movie together , i watched it for the first time in three years today and listen to the song for the first time in three years i felt like mom was with me today, maybe she was, i love you mom
@bmwnasher it is a great film th part i remember the most is when william holden said "we have not missed you and i we have not missed that many splendored thing" beautiful words, i will always think of my mom when i hear the song or watch the movie, thank you for your kind words
Bill Holden the Quintessential American Man is brilliant in this movie produced by 20th Century Fox. Jennifer Jones a brilliant actress garnered her 5th Academy Award nomination for her fine performance as the Eurasian Doctor.
A great movie directed by Henry King and starring two of Hollywood's finest players Bill Holden and Jennifer Jones.
Good movie, good movie. I knew about this movie for a couple of years because of my mom but I never really watched it from beginning to end without getting up.
I saw it all the way through for the first time a few days ago and I really loved it. It's now one of my favorite love movies.
Jennifer Jones is 90 years old. She was 36 and William Holden was 37 when this film was made. She was married to Robert Walker (divorced), David O. Selznick (widowed), and Norton Simon (widowed). She had three children. She is a breast cancer survivor.
She was a five time Oscar nominee and won for The Song Of Bernadette (1943).
David Selznick has no real function on this movie but since his adored Jennifer Jones was to star he bombarded 20th on "suggestions" on Jennifer's appearance, etc. Henry King who directed Jennifer in her Oscar Winning role in "Song of Bernadette" also directs Jennifer here and quite well. ( He would also direct her years later in her "Tender Is The Night"). Bill Holden is perfect
and the ending packs a wallop. PS It is
true that Jones and Holden did not personally like each other.
I absolutely adore this film - just watched it again on TV - pure magic - no swearing, no sex scenes just left to your imagination. True Hollywood romance - can't believe Jennifer Jones disliked William Holden (he was gorgeous back then) does any one know why?
i haven't watch this, but i think the movie was great! i want to watch it, but i don't know where i could find a copy of this. i love the OST of this movie, it fits it well. doe anyone have a copy of this movie?..
I have watched this movie more than 20 times and I still think about it. It is the most romantic film I have ever seen, and I have seen many. Sad ending, but beautiful, and the music contributes a lot to the movie. Miss Jones is perfect in the role, I gave her an Oscar in my private world, the same to Holden. I would called it: The Most Romantic Film Ever!!!!
One Way Passage, 1932, directed by W. Dieterle, starring Kay Francis and another William: Powell. It's also a heartbreaking love story and music is absolutely beautiful too. Of course it is a black&white older movie, but still a great masterpiece.
Jennifer Jones, great edgy intelligent and beautiful is perfect here as the Eurasian Doctor and Bill Holden also fine. Jones was nominated for her great performance and the ending is a knockout, anyone who is not affected has never had feelings for anyone.
PS It is a fact that Holden, a real ladies man who worked with the greatest lady stars of his era: Hepburn, Novak, Loren, Hayward,
Lucy, did not get along at all with Jennifer Jones which makes the acting all the more noteworthy.
Jennifer Jones and William Holden did not get along ? Could have fooled me. Just shows what excellent actors they both are. They go so well together, my friend says he has never seen such a beautiful love story in a movie.

I used to cry and cry and cry whenever this was on TV. I was young. Perhaps the film influenced the way I feel about love and permanence....

Nothing romantic about a white dude with yellow fever. Tons of em all over expat bars in Asia looking to exploit dumb asian women.

Whoa that is a tiny bathing suit on William Holden. He must of been considered a hunk in those days.
