Just b/c a call doesn't qualify as Trauma 1 doesn't mean it isn't an emergency. If the person THINKS it's an emergency, they should call and not give a damn what other people will think of them for calling.
I can't stand when nonprofessional people tell other people what an emergency is.
You can be in a Trauma 2, sometimes even a 3, and still need emergency medical intervention.
2. unable to express oneself clearly; inarticulate
The operator was wanting her to clarify what exactly she meant...she could be in shock and incoherent but conscious...When I'm drunk I'm not coherent. But I'm alive and not in immediat4e danger...see my point?! The operator was trying to figure out if she was conscious or not
I wish this could happen to me (a shard of glass could literally stab me in the heart like what happened to this girl) but I'd be dead in a flash if it did. Actually I imagined it did but I was 25 and it was my aunt and uncle who took care of me.
I really think that 911 operators need different training. They should tell callers immediately that help is on the way and they should use language and a tone of voice that transmit urgent, yet calm, empathy. Impatiently scolding upset callers, not validating their distress and using a flat, monotone (unconcerned sounding) voice actually makes most people even more freaked out! It's really bad victim psychology. If rape counselors acted like that, imagine the negative impact it would have.
@whatever1210 thank god a lot of ppl now understand the importance of safety glass when you have small children around. i watched this show from beg to end, the series i mean, and back then, something like this, or having your child unbuckled from their car seat, not making them wear a helmet... not only did this show save lives in the sense that ppl knew how to react to emergencies, people learned what to do to prevent them.
Now this is a REAL Emergency, now days we hav idiots calling 911 one because a five month year old poke themselfs on the finger with a pin and it didn't even break the skin. -_-
she was calm because she was already falling into shock and did not know the extent of her injuries. as for how it happened she was running to fast and ended up running into the door. and back in those days windows and such were made of glass unlike now a days where as windows are made of plexy glass and are extremely hard to break.
It seems like such an unusual injury... I was playing it out in my head before she got hurt how it would happen, how the glass would just shoot into her heart and I couldnt come up with anything. What a freak accident.
The worst I had is when I cut my leg down to the bone when I was taking glass bottles out to the recycle bin and it had rained and I slipped and I fell backwards and I couldnt do anything I was losing energy and the worst I could do was scream as hard as I could I woke up in the hospital and that was two years ago.
This isn't the only segment related to a child getting cut by glass. The only other ones I can think of are the one from 425, where three boys are playing tag and one of them accidentally pushes his brother into a storm door or something, and the one from 630, where two boys are jumping on a bed, and the younger one accidentally slams his arm through a window. Did I miss any?
Wait one more. The one where a little girl is rocking in a rockingchair, and she falls backwards out the window.
The dispatcher didnt know what "incoherent" meant? Apparently scoring low on the Verbal part of the SATs aren't too important in her work! Wonder if she knows the word "imbecile"?!
@thepiper2112 I think most dispatchers, even today, have no idea how to help a family that's experiencing trauma.
When you have a patient who's family is on the scene when it happens, you have more than 1 patient. I was told that in paramedic school, but I know b/c my sister almost died during a medical emergency.
@thepiper2112 the dispatcher knew what "incoherent" meant. the grandmother wasn't using it correctly. It doesn't mean unconscious, it means illogical or not making sense.
The correct procedure for treating the little girl's wound would be to place an occlusive dressing over it. If they had no commercial dressing, they could make one by covering a gauze pad with Vaseline and sealing it to the wound w/ 1st Aid tape.
Chest wounds unaccompanied by flail chest are treated w/ occlusive dressings, which are sealed completely on all 4 sides.
Actually, you don't want to seal it on all four sides. You want to leave one side open to create a 'flutter-valve' to let air out so as not to create a tension pneumothorax in the event of a lung puncture.
Completely sealing a chest wound isn't always wise. If the patient isn't breathing, you can do so, but not when they have a sucking chest wound.
This causes paroxymal breathing, where one side of the chest moves in one direction & the injured side moves opposite it with each breath the patient takes.
Paroxymal breathing is always serious and, if sealed completely, will kill the person within minutes.
For a sucking chest injury, you seal 3 sides of the wound, leaving a small corner open.
It's actully sharper than the razorblade. Glass cuts can be very davastating. Lucky the girl's grandparents know first-aid and CPR. That's what possibly saved her life.
I have all the segments from when they aired on later episodes. The segments are "Church Bus", "Houston Trauma Docu", "Arlington", and "Baby Fire Rescue".
Saran wrap makes sense technically, but unforunately its not sterile.. while it might prolong her life to be brought in to hosp, the subsequent sepsis could kill her. Harm vs Benefit I guess. Tough call.
dose any one know that one epsiode when the grand mother is mowing that lawn with the big mower and her grand kids are in the yard with her. The little boy kept on running towards the mower but the grandma told him to stay away but he didnt than his leg got ran over by the mower does any one know about that one? if you do let me know I want to watch it
Yeah, I'd like to see that one, too. Then there's another mower one w/ two twin boys and the sister ran over one of them when he ran and slipped underneath it.
I think I remember that one. There was one where the grandmother ran her grandchild over with a lawnmower too. I think in one of them the kid lost a leg.
Was the piece of glass in Kendra's heart visible externally, and if so, did her grandfather pull it out? Because if he did, he did the wrong thing because that glass acted as a plug and removing that could've caused Kendra to bleed to death.
@speedyhobbit Kendra did go to college and graduated in 2009. She works as a teacher assistant in a special education classroom. Kendra will be getting married in two months!
@LoweredNJuiced Yes, the events unfolded at the grandparents' house in Renton, Washington. The actual house was used in the recreation. The grandparents raised Kendra's dad, Alan and his two brothers there and still live at the house today.
you should make a compilation video that shows all the animated Rescue vehicles that where featured in each segment with the title name and # that it was featured on as a segment, just a suggestion.
By 1991 when this accident occured, safety glass had been in us (at least in Britain) for many years. I recall wired safety glass being installed in the door panels at my old scout groups building as far back as 1958 after one kid got cut on the ordinary glass.
Grandma activates the DIctaphone and it goes round and round as the call is being recorded. The Dictaphone goes round and round so the Renton Fire Department can respond. Even the baby is recorded on the Dictaphone
Has anyone seen Jaws 3-D the jaws shark wasnt aware where he was going so he crashed into the glass of the control room in seaworld, thus kendra's crash resembles that scene.
Youtube only gives me three images to choose from, and that wasn't one of them. If you click "View All Comments" at the bottom of the page, you can see the three images.
@happy7117 Both the grandma and grandpa are Kendra's actual grandparents. The only actors in the episode are Kendra and baby Jared during the recreation. The real Kendra and Jared show up towards the end of the show.
has anyone recognized the scene at 04:05 it's the latter substitute image for the ambulance that's all by itself, thus this one has a firetruck with it.
I've had plenty of people including myself run into a door and press the latch and the latch didn't work and the door didn't open like they thought it would. Don't be so quick to judge. I'm sure you've done that too.
Yikes!!!!! That must have been scary to have something like that in the heart!!! Well, if she was careful near the door, that wouldn't have ever happened!
I'm an EKG Technician and paramedic.

My replies to various comments starting from the earliest posts:
--- Happy7117: We (family) think Kendra slipped on a rug and fell through the door. She knew to use the handle.
--- OneSkiWonder: Another possibility is the door handle stuck and Kendra's momentum carried her through the door as suggested by OneSkiWonder!
--- Happy7117: The only actors in the re-enactment are "Kendra" and "baby Jared."
--- LoweredNJuiced: The filming was done at the actual location in Renton, Washington.

panzered4180 2 years ago
That's true.
I was thinking of paroxsymal breathing, which can only occur if the pt. is moving air, but this pt. wasn't breathing.
I always seal on 3 sides.
I was responding to the 911 operator's directions. IMO, they were inaccurate, but the grandparents wouldn't have known that.
Your way is better but, in this case, rebandaging would expose the wound to bacteria.
I would have left it in place, watched for paroxsymal breathing and taken off one side when the first signs occurred.
vickiormindyb 2 years ago
Yeah, that would be appropriate management too.
panzered4180 2 years ago
Completely sealing a chest wound isn't always wise. If the patient isn't breathing, you can do so, but not when they have a sucking chest wound.
This causes paroxymal breathing, where one side of the chest moves in one direction & the injured side moves opposite it with each breath the patient takes.
Paroxymal breathing is always serious and, if sealed completely, will kill the person within minutes.
For a sucking chest injury, you seal 3 sides of the wound, leaving a small corner open.

@happy7117 Both the grandma and grandpa are Kendra's actual grandparents. The only actors in the episode are Kendra and baby Jared during the recreation. The real Kendra and Jared show up towards the end of the show.

Is Part 2 of this ep coming? Just wondering, it's a favorite of mine.

I uploaded it hours ago. If you're still not seeing it, check my profile page. It's on there.

I apologize, I meant Segment 2, not part 2 of this segment.
DaR4Buff 3 years ago
Not this time, I'd have to split it. I'll consider it for next time.
allgood2000 3 years ago
has anyone recognized the scene at 04:05 it's the latter substitute image for the ambulance that's all by itself, thus this one has a firetruck with it.
gregorkrause 3 years ago
Isn't this the same scene (4:05) that's used for the opening?
theultimatekoopa2 3 years ago
oh yeah.
gregorkrause 3 years ago
it was used after commercials were over.

don't know there is a door here ! ~,~
jackieliem2007 3 years ago
I've had plenty of people including myself run into a door and press the latch and the latch didn't work and the door didn't open like they thought it would. Don't be so quick to judge. I'm sure you've done that too.

Yikes!!!!! That must have been scary to have something like that in the heart!!! Well, if she was careful near the door, that wouldn't have ever happened!
ABroadwaystar2534 3 years ago
I remember this one, poor girl. Maybe now she will be more careful when running in the house.

theultimatekoopa2 3 years ago 4
That's why there are door handles folks!
Door handles are there for a reason!
happy7117 3 years ago
@happy7117 Kendra knew not to push against the glass. We think she slipped on the rug by the door.
