  • OWN ME

  • God I love Industrial music, I fell in love with Trent Reznor (my favorite), and that appreciation has caused me to branch out into the various other veins and breeds of the industrial influence: Coil, Throbbing Gristle, Ministry, Skinny Puppy, they're all good and unique: Reznor, Jourgensen being a combo of synth and classic rock/metal influence, SP goth and synth, TG and Coil synth and experimental, and now Swans, hell I love all of it!!! =D

  • I like the way the itunes bit tries to sell you the wrong song :D

  • Some of the greatest music ever, even if listening to it does feel like being bludgeoned in the face repeatedly with a tire iron.

  • Go ahead and thumbs me down if you want, but am I the only one that finds this absolutely unbearable to listen to? Never heard of these guys until now, but all i have to say is... who woul sign these guys onto anything?

  • @RockWillLiveOn i'm looking at your channel, I see "loverboy" and "eddie money" vids as your favorites. Lets just say that you've ventured a little far off your path of classic rock deep cuts.

  • @Endoloc Then you should also have noticed the dates as to when those vids were favourited, as I have not favourited anything recently. It is by no means a reflection on what I listen to daily. I just happen to really like songs by those bands. What does that have to do with The Swans anyway? Maybe it's just not my cup of tea, but this sounds like nothing more than a bunch of noise with pitiful vocals.. and this is coming from a guy who enjoys death metal.

  • @RockWillLiveOn some people like it, deal with it loverboy.

  • @Endoloc Dude, it's called an "opinion". Where is there a rule saying that you can't comment on Youtube vids if you're not a fan? It's called free speech. There are people who view bands for the first time that I like, and they say they don' like them. And that's fine, it's their choice.

And while we're on the subject, what's so bad about Loverboy? At least I had constructive criticism, so where' yours then? All you did was call me "loverboy" as if that was somehwo funny.

  • @RockWillLiveOn you're nuts

  • @RockWillLiveOn It's supposed to be noisy. It's harsh, unpleasant, dissonant. Art is not meant to be catchy, accessible or even necessarily enjoyable. It's supposed to convey an idea or an emotion. I appreciate this because it's so industrial. It's monotonous, pulsing, grinding... The raw emotion is powerful. It sounds like how working a shitty minimum wage industrial job feels, and so the experience of listening to music like this is cathartic for me, and I love it.

  • @RockWillLiveOn I figure you're hating on Swans because you either

    1. are a brainwashed vacuumhead who listens to banal radio shit because it's "catchy" and hates this because it's harsh and dissonant

    2. just don't personally enjoy the music

neither is a good reason to talk about swans like their music has no artistic merit. furthermore, michael gira's vocals are not "pathetic", they're intense, deeply personal. perhaps you should go back to listening to safe corporate music like Loverboy...

  • @HammarHeart Are you fucking retarded? I JUST said in my other post that I listen to heavy metal music - that is, thrash metal, black metal, death metal, doom metal. Those are about expressing anger, disapproval, and rebellion in a harsh and aggressive way, but what I enjoy about that music is the "music". It's hard to differentiate between the different sounds, but there is definitely melodic structures there.

All I hear in Swans is the same thing over and over and over. Don't like it.

  • @RockWillLiveOn Sorry, I didn't see that post. Fair enough. I like metal music as well.

The thing about industrial music (and early Swans is very industrial) is that it is repetitive; it imitates the sound of machinery. it's not melodic, there's not really much structure to it, just hammering, plodding monotonous percussion, like steel clanging and chains grinding and such. You either dig it or don't... I know I really didn't like this kind of music when I first heard it, but it grows on you.

  • @HammarHeart That's absolutely fair enough, and i'm really sorry I lashed out the way I did. My apologies.

When I first heard of Swans, it started out with a "live" video of them performing, and there was literally no action of any kind for 9 minutes straight, and it bored me to death. So then I jumped to the studio versions of songs and found it unbearable. Maybe in time I can find enjoyment with this.

There's wonderful art to be found in any type of music, catchy or not.

  • @HammarHeart *Continued* I actually recently heard of Swans for the first time after a rumour taht they may be openers for a Canadian band called "Danko Jones". I am going to see them live (big fan!) but researched Swans, and part of what made me mad (and resulted in my initial angry post) was that these two bands are totally unrelated in so many ways, and if these guys are opening, i'll be in no rush to get to the venue

  • @RockWillLiveOn I doubt they'll be playing much of anything from their industrial/no-wave era... they just came out with a new album, and it sounds vastly different from the stuff you're listening to on this video (and the live video, which I assume is from the Public Castration live recording)... It's more like post-punk/prog rock type stuff (I guess)

  • @HammarHeart not post- punk at all, or prog rock really either. what i got out of it was this ambient and expiremental folk-y music. something you wouldn't really expect to come out this time period, but hey that's swans for you. they are basically anti-music...music. hahah. @RockWillLiveOn- dude it's one thing to have an opinion but it's another to say this is horrible crap and question who would sign this band after only hearing two songs by them. you come of as incredibly ignorant that way..

  • this is just simply beautiful...

  • Swans have some of the best music ever written.

  • Old Swans is the angriest music in the world. Like, I expect him to crap his pants in sheer rage. And maybe shove it in The Boss's face.

  • Kinda scary when Gira bellows...

    Heavier than metal this!

  • @industrymonkey Haha I really don't think that there were many if any bands heavier than Swans in 1984.

  • @RavenXGhost Michael Gira: "It’s not just about some dumbass metal person turning up to 15 on their amp. It’s kind of a spiritual aspiration. It’s wanting the music to atomise your body – to take each molecule and just explode it. It’s looking for an ecstatic experience, and not about some dumb 'heavy music' thing." :)

  • @BirsaGomorraBeach what a pretentious asshole... I love early swans but this guy spouts so much holier-than-thou bullshit in interviews. there was absolutely nothing wrong with the previous person's comment about this being the heaviest music in 1984... maybe the "dumb heavy music thing" gira is whining about is also a search for an "ecstatic experience" even if he is too full of himself to see that. I've learned that just because someone makes cool music doesn't mean they are cool people

  • @smegmalfog well, i think he was whinin about (most) metal and the satanic-evil posturing that comes with it. I myself tend to draw a line between heavy music with a purpose, and the one that's just made out of macho-tripping metalhead shit. For example, early Napalm Death were heavy as hell, but i never seen them as 'dumb heavy music' since they were moved by an extremely strong emotional urge (as well as a clear political agenda), but then lost it and became just another heavy band.

  • only 808 views? does nobody else like this?

  • repeat customers.

  • I didn't know these were uploaded...

    I like this.

  • absolutely punishing, Great vocal performance

  • I second that "oh yeah". This period of Swans was so goddamn raw. I go into traces listening to this album. I think many do. it inspires such.

  • great song !!!

  • oooohhhhh yyeeeeeaaaahhhh.....
