@ Nanabobo they did exclude the low health beeping in more recent pokémon games. The low health noise has now been remixed to it's own little song in Black and White version
A lot of these aren't cliches. Running in place, beeping at low health, and bad AI are just straight up flaws or results of technical/ time limitations. Things like repeating enemies and themes are just a matter of degree, and in actuality repetition itself is a core concept of design that will obviously be bad if improperly balanced. Lastly, space is too broad and that's like saying that oceans are a cliche.
On another note, keep your volume consistent, your voice is quiet. Otherwise gj
To be fair, Pokemon fixed the annoying beeping while staying true to its origins in the newest games- they replaced the beeping with a "time's up" type remix of the theme, with the beeping integrated into the melody.
Did you know some GC controllers have a "turbo" function that repeatedly presses the button while you hold it? (Like the turbo controllers from the NES Era.)
Another game where regenerating health makes sense is inFamous because his body heals faster with his powers, but that doesn't explain why Kesslers health doesn't regenerate
I don't care what you think, musical continuity is amazing. But continuity in and of itself is a debatable subject. I've heard some people say they don't want any kind of continuity (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, MOFFAT!) so I guess it's understandable that people also don't like it in music. I myself love it.
Oh God. I hated the doppelganger cliche in games. Sure, it worked with Super Mario Sunshine, since they did look exactly the same, but with Shadow and Sonic, they look nothing alike. What? Is there only 1 hedgehog in the entire world or something?
@Ryanmiller70 You actually kind of brought up a somewhat valid point unintentionally. Since I assume that there are a few hedgehogs that actually talk and walk on two legs, I guess there's some room for error. But seriously, Sonic, the blue savior of Station Square, changing his colors and robbing a bank?
@GamingTopTen I loled So hard at number 2 lolololol The Number 1 i do hate alot but not in tf2 because he heals others with His Medigun Wich is really creative and usefull :D
but would you believe me if i said there was one Cliché that everyone hates but there's one Mission if not a charecter YOU DO NOT HATE ever! EXCORT MISSIONS!!!
and how is it possible to have 1 fun about it? Half life 2 =D the Sidekick you have in that game is Acctually REALLY SMART!!! and its fun to have her
most horror games have a level called the awaking, ive noticed it alot now almost every horror game i play on the wii has that level name init. specially japanise games
I hate the youtube cliches of people posting all the vg videos about top tens, and all of them are different and nobody cares. yyhea, NOBODY CARES!!!1!
The thing about the use of rearrangements of music isn't always a bad thing. You mentioned how Mother 3 reuses the Pigmask Army theme. Well, the thing about that is that you hear it more frequently over the course of the game, as Porky's influence on the land grows stronger. I personally think that that's a nice use of audial symbolism.
the regenerating health can be a good thing i mean in black ops on veteran would you like to walk round on very low health for ages until you find something to heal you?
It's not really a cliche, but glitches. Many times I have ran into infuriating glitches; corrupt saves, game freezes, entrapment, item deletion, and just anything that pointlessly prevents progress or makes a game more difficult.
@GamingTopTen Yeah you die a lil on the inside. You know what's worse than glitches the original Xbox and the 360. Nothing worse than a console that starts off barely functioning (plagued by shitty optical drives etc [360 slim so far being the exception]).
Number 1 was a major nit-pick. Imagine playing stranger's wrath without people able to regenerate your health: yeah, that'd be hard as a conversation with Rick Perry. Although #2 was spot on
@Tobi3440 yea i here what you mean and what makes it worse is when its a 20 minute cutscene where you cant skip even after you died against a tough boss and have to watch it AGAIN!
About Number 9, it makes sense for the police to have mistaken Shadow for Sonic at nighttime, since it's dark and the characters look similar besides colour. But I WON'T give the game credit because Amy mistaked Shadow for Sonic IN BROAD DAYLIGHT!!!
Is this guy stupid? or did he just fall on his head from his drug filled parents?
All 9 things he bitches and moans about is just really stupid and ignorant of him, the only onw i agree on him about is that AI in all games are stupid as hell and need to play more like human player instead of a dumbfuck.
A dumbfuck which is what this guy acts like for 9 reasons of just.... argh it gave me a headache to hear just stupid reasons as to why this video was even made.
Only one I disagree with is the one with Space. I don't mind it, heck! I love it. But I understand where the rest of them are. The clich'e that I hate are luck based bosses.
the most annoying Beeping sound i ever heard in a videogame is he " Money almost gone " in "One Piece Mansion " ( nothing to do with "One Piece" ) for the PS1...trust me...its annoying as hell
you mostly find musics remixed in themselfes in very much games and even animes, if you listen closely you often find the same basic melody in much other songs (example devil may cry the anime) and much much more, i think its made on purpose so that you know. THIS is the MAIN theme of the game/anime THIS shall make people remind of this what they are playing/watching when they hear the soundtrack (since people like me love to listen to game musik)
The worst case for me regarding number 5 is Yoshi's Island DS. Every single level theme is just a remix of the same track! The first game actually had variety!
@GamingTopTen I know the point was already made by the 4th brawl song in #5, but I also want to point out you forgot the Battlefield theme and main menu theme. Though you probably know this anyhow.
Another overused Gaming Clichés is the one used in the Megaman X games, and the Megaman Zero games: After you've fought all the other bosses in the game (excluding the final one), before you can fight the final boss, you have to re-fight every single boss you've ever fought against in that paticular game. And I think they're powered-up, so it makes it hard, even more so that you don't (for certain) get healed completely between boss fights.
Personally my most hated cliche is when a comedic video game makes fun of a video game cliche... and then uses it anyway. In The Bard's Tale, the Bard complains that the princess is ALWAYS kept on the top floor of the tower, never on the ground floor or anywhere else easy to reach, but then the game makes you fight your way to the top of the tower anyway. Pointing out that something is not fun and then making you do it is not intelligent game design.
A cliche I hate is enemies that wont SHUT UP. No More Heroes 2 anyone? Another one is enemies that make some kind of victory animation or quote when they hit/kill you. We know we failed in some way, we DON'T need it rubbed in our faces!
Red versus Blue --- VERY ANNOYING cliche, but not exactly a bad one. They use Red Versus Blue because, even if you're colorblind, you can tell the difference between teams. However it's very annoying and it's been seen ever since 8-bit days. Even the newer games with multiplayer use this color-system.
#2 Sorry to tell ya kid, but, AI is hard to program. All you can do in L4D1-2 is dictate what health % of remaining HP to start healing the player.
Also, it is a multiplayer game, if you expect GREAT AI in a multiplayer game, hang yourself because you have no life (Also, that isn't a cliche, learn what that term means and how to use it)
#1 Recovering health is there for MP games. If two good players go at it with old style HP, they end up just trading kills. You tell ME a unique health system.
Erm... number 10 is not a cliche.. it is an engine limitation since hacing the game detect wall woyld lead to much annoyance (As it has in some games that tried it) Because due to limitations, if the character even grazes the wall, you suddenly lose ALL momentum due to the only way without a physics engine to stop a player is a detectcollision script (Which sucks)
While I agree with some of the cliches (like excessive button mashing), your arguments against the others just seemed silly, and only existed for the sake of complaining. You might as well be questioning why there exists a blue hedgehog that can run at the speed of sound, or why a plumber can eat mushrooms to grow big and is able to shoot fireballs by grabbing a flower. You suspend your disbelief so that you don't question trivial bits, because those matters get in the way of the bigger picture.
What is your opinion on the space scene in Portal 2? You used a clip from it, and it seems reasonable with the fainting and physics. I want to know your perspective. The only dislike is that you can still hear Wheatley screaming. Other than that, it's realistic (if there were portals, that is...).
people who got blisters from mario party got free gaming gloves?! what the fuck me and my sister both got blisters from it and never heard anything about free gloves
LOL. I was going to say you wouldn't like MOTHER 3 because it overuses the Love theme, but then you shown the porky fight and I knew you must of played it :P.
It is now officially a cliche. Some character (or characters) travel through time to defeat their enemy, whether it be the good guys or bad guys...or BOTH.
Timesplitters, TimeShift, Sonic 06, Sonic Generations...and I'm prettty sure the list goes on. Oh, and don't get me started on infinite loops. I won't stop complaining, and it gives me a headache.
As for the beeping low health, Pokemon somewhat fixed it by replacing the beeping with "crisis music." Yes, it's actual music (not just beeps) that replaces the battle music to showcase you're in a bad situation. That's a million times better than a beep. If you wanted to warn players of low health, no more than 3 beeps should be used, seriously.
@#5: I don't know, when used effectively, I love variations-on-a-theme soundtracks. Super Mario World and Super Mario Land 2 made pretty good use of that, as well as Super Mario 64, to a lesser extent. Some of Brawl's were a bit of a stretch, though.
Bad AI and running into obstacles aren't clichés, they're common flaws.
These things we're never implemented because they were novel at one point, it's because the programmers couldn't do any better.
Also, complaining about physical improbabilities in videogames such as infinite breath is stupid. A game is supposed to differ from actual laws of physic to increase fun.
One thing that always annoyed me was the exagerrated breathing of characters. It may create a more vivid looking game especially on older 3d games, but it just looks out of place moving up and down all the time.
a recent example would be pacman party, watching some gameplay minutes just makes me plain angry. I don't carei f they're comic characters, just stop moving!
I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hat BACKTRACKING! I already finished that level I don't wanna do it again! I actually liked subspace emmesariy untill I had to beat the game all over again getting back useless characters and then having to kill the boses again! Screw meta ridleys awseome theme! I am not fighting him unless I'm snake, meta knight, bowser or samus!
- You are no match for a boss unless you follow a single strict procedure, that bugs me alot, not to be confused with the point you mentioned, but what i mean is that the bosses should have more than one way to die.
- Mandatory puzzles in action games like in re5 or ac brotherhood in the davinci disaperance.
- Infinite colectables like in GTA SA and 4. "Ok 50 items is not enough? 100 then? No? Ok, how about 100 spray tags, 50 horse shoes, 50 foto ops?" "rhm, add 50 shells and were good"
For me, I hate turret sequences (Dead Space 1 being a prime example), tedious arena battles which last forever (e.g. Darksiders) and escort missions (Jak 2 comes into mind...). Anyway, great list.
i do hate low health beeping, however Pokemon black and white pulled it off perfectly by changing the game audio into a song that used the beeping as a form of percussion while the rest of the song made you tense up and focus on your pokemon
Its funny that in Pokemon Black/White, they turned the low HP warning into a Panic Melody.
Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 has a Low vital Warning for some reason. It beeps loud too. Which I don't know why is can just be the vital machine beeping faster to show your patient is dying...
The final boss is supposed to be overpowered to the max, but some games either drop the health dramatically or make the time between attacks longer to ease difficulty.
Oh and I loved the AI part with mario party and left 4 dead.. classic

What is your opinion on the space scene in Portal 2? You used a clip from it, and it seems reasonable with the fainting and physics. I want to know your perspective. The only dislike is that you can still hear Wheatley screaming. Other than that, it's realistic (if there were portals, that is...).
fmasterish 3 months ago
@fmasterish I found it a great twist ending. I just wanted to use the space core as a joke.
GamingTopTen 3 months ago
@fmasterish You can still hear Wheatley screaming because you're inside a cone of air being sucked out of the portal.

Good GOD regenerating health sucks. That and "2 weapons at a time" are the reasons I don't play FPS games a lot nowadays.

We live in the 21st century, the AI's should obviously be stupider to match the people in the world at the moment.

LOL. I was going to say you wouldn't like MOTHER 3 because it overuses the Love theme, but then you shown the porky fight and I knew you must of played it :P.

for #5, mother 3 did it with a reason... however super mario land 2 exagerated it even worse...

TIME TRAVEL.
DavidCortez1 4 months ago
@DavidCortez1 Its not a cliche, its just lazy writing, also, ever noticed that most of these storys do not make a lick of sense?

The thing about repeating music, it's called a Theme, it's intentional and good.
GenocidalEdge 4 months ago
@GenocidalEdge When done in moderation.
AkaiAzul 4 months ago
@AkaiAzul I'm not talking about the beeping. I'm talking about when a melody to a song is reused.
GenocidalEdge 4 months ago
@#5: I don't know, when used effectively, I love variations-on-a-theme soundtracks. Super Mario World and Super Mario Land 2 made pretty good use of that, as well as Super Mario 64, to a lesser extent. Some of Brawl's were a bit of a stretch, though.
llproductions2006 4 months ago
I cant believe you would call the makers of brawl lazy, those remixes of the main theme are great and take ALOT of work. btw I think brawl is boring
nubfail 4 months ago
#3: *Beeping occurs for the 6th time* Kill me.
#2: Again, that's not a cliche, it's a techno difficulty.
#1: I think this cliche is a good thing.
Brittonbubba137 4 months ago
#10: Not really a cliche, just a graphic overlook.
#9: LOL What? Super Smash Bros. Brawl had a shit load of them and not fuck was given from me.
#8: I think it's incredible.
#7: At least some enemies in Streets of Rage have recolored enemies and they are more powerful than original colors.
#6: Some games do it so you know if it's hard, and you used mostly E-rated game clips, so kids 6+ might not know how to beat bosses.
#5: Fucks, I didn't give about it.
#4: Fucking button mashing!

100 then? No? Ok, how about 100 spray tags, 50 horse shoes, 50 foto ops?" "rhm, add 50 shells and were good"

i do hate low health beeping, however Pokemon black and white pulled it off perfectly by changing the game audio into a song that used the beeping as a form of percussion while the rest of the song made you tense up and focus on your pokemon

One video game cliche I hate, Easy final bosses.
The final boss is supposed to be overpowered to the max, but some games either drop the health dramatically or make the time between attacks longer to ease difficulty.
