  • Grandissimo Jeff!!

  • brad's harmonic ideas are just endless, awesome

  • i read jeff ballard put his cymbals up in an attic so the bats would shit on them.

  • @houseofburn WTF??

  • check out the

drumer RAMSES RODRIGUEZ from CUBA,from ROberto fonseca s band

  • How to develop a solo: by professor mehldau

  • @worldclass07 Ha, more like reverend mehldau

  • Sickest bass solo ever!

  • PLEEEAAASSEE can someone tell me what Jeff Ballards rythms are in the last chorus of his solo? Whenever I try and count it it comes out wrong.. what is he doing? quintuplets? septuplets? I just can't hear it... otherwise, I LOVE it!! especially Brad at the beginning of Jeffs solo, and the way jeff plays off it...

  • @leomcculloch Good question. I think he goes "off the grid" a bit, so it may not be a true metric modulation. If I had to guess, he seems to be playing 3 beats per 4/4 bar, but loosely. He does it in the space of one chorus, so there might be math involved, or he's just feeling it. Usually when drummers do this, they play a more conventional chorus to help bring the band in, like he does here.

  • @emon3 After years of not being able to hear jeff's solo with respect to the form, I only just managed it, knew exactly where he was at all times. Now I can appreciate what a truly beautiful drum solo this is!!!! His last 8 bars really bring back the groove in 4, have absolutely no idea what all that othe stuff is, those are some intense modulations!

  • OH MY GOD

  • I'd kill for that old crunchy dry K Ballard's using!

  • @drycomplexity So would I! I once heard a pretty pitiful drummer playing an old K that sounded soooo sweet, I offered him 800 bucks on the spot for it and he laughed in my face and said someone once offered me $5000 for this cymbal. Doesn't it piss you off when someone who can't really even play jazz has a nice cymbal like that? Perhaps you are correct and murder really is the best option! Ha!

  • @drycomplexity and those old Camcoe drums to,

  • Probably the best comping for a bass solo I've ever heard!

  • yeah.. its PERFECT. spot on.

  • jeez BM plays so far outside the charts sometimes.. I love it!!!

  • Great playing! Bravo! TY.

  • This stuff is superb! I just wish Mezzo TV would stop putting so many dizzying crane shots swooping around Brad, and show me the bassist's right hand ONCE...

But then, beggars can't be choosers. Thanks for the vid!

  • Prefer the Chick version - purely becasue of the rhythm you get in the B section bit after the cycle of fourths/fifths.....nonetheless SWEET.

  • CTA stands for Chicago Transit Authority...

    or Central Transit Authority.

  • Your taking the piss, right???

    Its a Chick Corea Number

  • this isn't Chick's tune. It's a miles davis tune i think. Called CTA

  • actually after a lil looking on the internet its been majorly covered by CCEB II and its actually by Jimmy Heath, with CTA apparently standing forthe 'chicago transit authority' :O :P

  • I knew that ;)

  • i believe its Joe Henderson or someone like that... definitely not Miles.

  • Dude is Jimmy Heath. A tune called CTA!

  • godswiph-Joe Henderson was a sax player not a trumpet player.

  • hahaha... i know who joe henderson is, buddy... he's the guy that messes up on that classic recording of McCoy Tyner's "Passion Dance." what made u think i thought he was a trumpet player?

  • godswiph-Because you said that you didn't think that the musician was Miles Davis. Last I remember is that Miles Davis plays the trumpet.

P.S.-Mehldah is a very fine musician-whether you like him or not. His peers rate him as such.

  • sorry... i guess i wasn't clear. i didn't think the COMPOSER of the tune was Miles Davis. i was trying recall who WROTE this tune, not who played it.

and p.s.: Mehldau is one of my favorite musicians in the history of this music. did i say something to suggest otherwise? or are u just misinterpreting EVERYTHING i post? LOL!!!

  • @godswiph james heath wrote the tune

  • Dude its Jimmy heath's tune!

  • Chill boss

  • connie theresa ann. by jimmy heath. he was seeing a half black, half asian woman by theat name

  • what's CTA stand for?

  • sometimes brad's stage presence makes him seem like kind of an ass. I'll bet he's a real nice guy in person though.

  • Me and my friends talked to Mehldau after a show in Bergen, Norway and he was a real nice and humble guy :) Anyway, I think most jazz pianists look weird on-stage!

  • lol, I know what you mean. I don't want to be negative, but sometimes his facial expression, like when he's watching Ballard solo, is pretty grim

  • I've been taking care of the trio at Moldejazz the last few days, and this is a promise: he's an awesome guy. Someone mentioned to him that I play the piano, and Brad came up to me and we talked a lot about classical piano music. He spoke about Bach, Prokofiev and Scriabin. They are all extremely nice, including the manager, Vincent Rousseau.

  • i always think hes drunk lol

  • That may be the case. Who knows?

  • I can hear the melody from Jeff's solo.

  • Nowadays jazz ir really sick. Mindshot! So good stuff.

  • man, i just saw brad in stl 2 nights ago, but just wondering, is that brown outfit what he wears all the time like pat's striped shirt? He was wearing the exact same stuff.

  • He has 100 same shirts!!

  • there's something really monkish about this composition. in a good way. not that there's a bad way.

  • shit i just realised what it was. hehe...

  • yeah, I just thought that this is Monk tune when I first heard this tune.

  • Yeah... his solo is definitly Monk inspired! I love Brad... such a huge bag... so much to draw from.

  • nice. That's awesome

  • This is called CTA

  • jeff ballard uses camco drums here with old K's and the bill stewart model.

  • Do you know how is it standard name??

  • i think I have watched this video 50 times in a row... Brad is a freak

  • I saw this band last month...sick. Larry had the greatest night. It was the best bass playing I've ever heard/seen. Him and Brad are like one being...so in eachothers minds..

  • Anybody know what type of cymbals/drums jeff ballard uses?

  • Old K and Bill Stewart Model

  • thanks for the great video..Hope to see more :)

  • Brad's timing so great.

  • Jeff Ballard is the baddest MF on the planet. I saw a double bill at AF with Wayne and Chick. Jeff swung Brian Blade under the table. Wasn't Brian's fault 'cause Wayne's music these days is so unswingin', but stiil, Jeff just burned!

  • This is a great video and I would agree that it swings hard with jeff on drums, but to say that wayne's music these days isn't swinging isn't fair. Sure it doesn't swing in the traditional 4/4, but all of the musicians are so sensitive to eachother, and the music in my opinion is so creative and happening, that it swings as hard as anything wayne has ever done. Brad is fantastic, and Wayne is still fantastic, and has been for so many years.

  • no man. I saw wayne's group play last year and it was the best show I have ever been to in my life. The communication happening between the musicians was incredible. I talked to everyone afterwards including Wayne, and he is a sharp well put together guy. He has returned to acoustic music, and I think he is making some incredible music. I can understand why some people don't dig it though. I guess it's a taste thing.

  • it's interesting that nobody cared about what the great John Coltrane was doing at the very end of his life as well. I am not suggesting that Wayne Shorter is at the end of his life, but it's odd that people move away from these masters when their music becomes "more abstract". Long life to the great Wayne Shorter, a unique artist who's always changing.

  • Yeah, just cause it's abstract doesn't mean it doesn't have a pocket...I don't agree that there's nothing to grasp onto. If you're tuned in enough then you can hear "1" as subtle as it may be at times. It only is hard to grasp if you lose that point of reference, then it becomes REALLY abstract.

  • PS Aside from the discussion of Wayne Shorter's band, I really dig this group, by the way.

  • i love the new bmt playing a bit more obscure classics such as cta and thelonious (i heard it on a concert). sooooo swinging!! trio deffinitelly sounds different with jeff. anyway, my personal favourite brad yet is the one from around year 2001. such a shame i didn't know anything about him then! trio with jorge was a hell of a trio!!

  • jeff is a badass

    a super badass

    period

  • well... gees, man.... i mean, i don't know, dude... it's just that... chick digs jeff, brad digs jeff, mark turner digs jeff... even if he's not your fave (i put quite a few drummers ahead of him for my personal taste), you just gotta admit that's he's nice. REEEEEEEAL NICE with it.

What a swingin' performance this is!!! ABSURDLY SWINGIN'!!!!

  • Absolutely...

You know who else digs Jeff?

Joshua, K Rosenwinkel, Pat, D Douglas, B Monder. And he is on most of their groundbreaking records, he's not "just gigging" around New York w these cats..

  • right at around 5:40 at Brads last chorus there is a golden moment, this is sucha happeneing trio. i watch this video like every time im at a computer. About the Bill Stewart thing, i havent studied with him, however i did ask him about brushes after a gig andf he spent like 15 minutes showing me, he seemed pretty approachable.

  • Jeff= Great sound, great time, huge ears, great comping and phrasing, this is why he is like the first call dude.

Fox news= Degree from Miami Jazz program(look out everybody), and i see you have toured the world, doesnt that just mean you have worked on the ships? in fact i wouldnt be surprised if you were there right now, i mean with all the time you have to talk sh.t about Jeff.

also about Jeffs comping, its called counterpoint(didnt they teach you this at Miami Jazz)

  • that comment is just strange

I`ve played drums for 20 years, I´ve heard most contemporary drummers from Roy Haynes (who is old and contemporary) to billy kilson

and bill stewart, Ballard is at that level

could please say what you dislike, the swing?

placement of 2 and 4 hihat? communication?

I really don`t understand your comment

  • first of all, I like your name

I`ve played drums with don menza and some the big names here in europe, I don`t follow you on the mechanical part, but I think that you are right the comping is a bit boring

in this clip, just sort of filling it out on the snare, without picking up to much on mehldaus playing

check out other clips with jeff, he is truly great

  • I would like to hear how you got a lesson from Stewart. I only know one guy who did and he kept bugging Bill until Bill gave in. Thing is, the guy showed up at his place and Bill whore a rubber Beavis mask the WHOLE 3 hrs he was there. He just wouldn't take it off. This guy told me it was more a a record listening hang, but the mask thing was weird.

  • @FoxNewsLies HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @FoxNewsLies Jeff is "weak, sterile, and common". Well. He plays with Mehldau. Do you play with Mehldau or someone like him ? I don't think so. Your comment makes me think of the "anti-Weckl" : allright, Weckl is an asshole, but everyone calls him, in every style. Do the greatest musicians work with assholes ? Maybe not !

  • The guy is a pussy and jealous. That's it. Fucking musicians, I am sick of them. You mention those 3 and I prefer them all to Ballard not to slight him but I just prefer those guys. Ballard is real understatment to the point where some guys don't get him. I want to see name dropping M.U. graduate show us a video of him doing better..

  • I`d just like to add that having heard it a couple of times, I can`t see anything wrong with Ballards comping

I know what you mean with namedropping and jelousy among musicians, I`ve played with some good musicians but I`m not even close to Jeff`s playing

  • so cool !!! many thanks to you !!

  • where do you get these videos from? are they from a dvd cos i would love to buy some brad dvd's

  • oh cool david. you got more? I'll fix that list soon sorry ;-)
