PLEEEAAASSEE can someone tell me what Jeff Ballards rythms are in the last chorus of his solo? Whenever I try and count it it comes out wrong.. what is he doing? quintuplets? septuplets? I just can't hear it... otherwise, I LOVE it!! especially Brad at the beginning of Jeffs solo, and the way jeff plays off it...
@leomcculloch Good question. I think he goes "off the grid" a bit, so it may not be a true metric modulation. If I had to guess, he seems to be playing 3 beats per 4/4 bar, but loosely. He does it in the space of one chorus, so there might be math involved, or he's just feeling it. Usually when drummers do this, they play a more conventional chorus to help bring the band in, like he does here.
@emon3 After years of not being able to hear jeff's solo with respect to the form, I only just managed it, knew exactly where he was at all times. Now I can appreciate what a truly beautiful drum solo this is!!!! His last 8 bars really bring back the groove in 4, have absolutely no idea what all that othe stuff is, those are some intense modulations!
@drycomplexity So would I! I once heard a pretty pitiful drummer playing an old K that sounded soooo sweet, I offered him 800 bucks on the spot for it and he laughed in my face and said someone once offered me $5000 for this cymbal. Doesn't it piss you off when someone who can't really even play jazz has a nice cymbal like that? Perhaps you are correct and murder really is the best option! Ha!
This stuff is superb! I just wish Mezzo TV would stop putting so many dizzying crane shots swooping around Brad, and show me the bassist's right hand ONCE...
But then, beggars can't be choosers. Thanks for the vid!
actually after a lil looking on the internet its been majorly covered by CCEB II and its actually by Jimmy Heath, with CTA apparently standing forthe 'chicago transit authority' :O :P
hahaha... i know who joe henderson is, buddy... he's the guy that messes up on that classic recording of McCoy Tyner's "Passion Dance." what made u think i thought he was a trumpet player?
sorry... i guess i wasn't clear. i didn't think the COMPOSER of the tune was Miles Davis. i was trying recall who WROTE this tune, not who played it.
and p.s.: Mehldau is one of my favorite musicians in the history of this music. did i say something to suggest otherwise? or are u just misinterpreting EVERYTHING i post? LOL!!!
Me and my friends talked to Mehldau after a show in Bergen, Norway and he was a real nice and humble guy :) Anyway, I think most jazz pianists look weird on-stage!
I've been taking care of the trio at Moldejazz the last few days, and this is a promise: he's an awesome guy. Someone mentioned to him that I play the piano, and Brad came up to me and we talked a lot about classical piano music. He spoke about Bach, Prokofiev and Scriabin. They are all extremely nice, including the manager, Vincent Rousseau.
man, i just saw brad in stl 2 nights ago, but just wondering, is that brown outfit what he wears all the time like pat's striped shirt? He was wearing the exact same stuff.
I saw this band last month...sick. Larry had the greatest night. It was the best bass playing I've ever heard/seen. Him and Brad are like one being...so in eachothers minds..
Jeff Ballard is the baddest MF on the planet. I saw a double bill at AF with Wayne and Chick. Jeff swung Brian Blade under the table. Wasn't Brian's fault 'cause Wayne's music these days is so unswingin', but stiil, Jeff just burned!
This is a great video and I would agree that it swings hard with jeff on drums, but to say that wayne's music these days isn't swinging isn't fair. Sure it doesn't swing in the traditional 4/4, but all of the musicians are so sensitive to eachother, and the music in my opinion is so creative and happening, that it swings as hard as anything wayne has ever done. Brad is fantastic, and Wayne is still fantastic, and has been for so many years.

I'm sorry, but maybe now it's gotten better. WHen I saw him he was so abstract there was nothing to grasp onto. I believe we (fans) become convinced someone is great by all the hype and his/her rep. Wayne was once the best...years of drinking and Weather Report took their toll. He's getting over, just like Cecil, who is a genius but who's been skatin' for years.
no man. I saw wayne's group play last year and it was the best show I have ever been to in my life. The communication happening between the musicians was incredible. I talked to everyone afterwards including Wayne, and he is a sharp well put together guy. He has returned to acoustic music, and I think he is making some incredible music. I can understand why some people don't dig it though. I guess it's a taste thing.
it's interesting that nobody cared about what the great John Coltrane was doing at the very end of his life as well. I am not suggesting that Wayne Shorter is at the end of his life, but it's odd that people move away from these masters when their music becomes "more abstract". Long life to the great Wayne Shorter, a unique artist who's always changing.
Yeah, just cause it's abstract doesn't mean it doesn't have a pocket...I don't agree that there's nothing to grasp onto. If you're tuned in enough then you can hear "1" as subtle as it may be at times. It only is hard to grasp if you lose that point of reference, then it becomes REALLY abstract.
i love the new bmt playing a bit more obscure classics such as cta and thelonious (i heard it on a concert). sooooo swinging!! trio deffinitelly sounds different with jeff. anyway, my personal favourite brad yet is the one from around year 2001. such a shame i didn't know anything about him then! trio with jorge was a hell of a trio!!
well... gees, man.... i mean, i don't know, dude... it's just that... chick digs jeff, brad digs jeff, mark turner digs jeff... even if he's not your fave (i put quite a few drummers ahead of him for my personal taste), you just gotta admit that's he's nice. REEEEEEEAL NICE with it.
What a swingin' performance this is!!! ABSURDLY SWINGIN'!!!!
Joshua, K Rosenwinkel, Pat, D Douglas, B Monder. And he is on most of their groundbreaking records, he's not "just gigging" around New York w these cats..
right at around 5:40 at Brads last chorus there is a golden moment, this is sucha happeneing trio. i watch this video like every time im at a computer. About the Bill Stewart thing, i havent studied with him, however i did ask him about brushes after a gig andf he spent like 15 minutes showing me, he seemed pretty approachable.
